2024's Biggest Movie Flop Is Almost Impossible To Watch Today (But There's A Good Reason Why)
Image
Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" was alternately the most fascinating and frustrating film of 2024. Cinephiles who'd been pining away for one last big-swing masterpiece from the maestro who gave us the "Godfather" trilogy, "The Conversation," and "Apocalypse Now" were mostly respectfully perplexed by Coppola's science-fiction saga; there were true believers out there, but the general consensus was that his vision of an empire in decline was intellectually fuzzy. On one hand, it was a godsend to receive an epic so stuffed with ideas that you couldn't possibly break it down on a single viewing; alas, it was hard to work up the enthusiasm to dive back in because the film lacked the sumptuous sweep of those aforementioned masterpieces.

Of course, Coppola is too great a filmmaker and "Megalopolis" is far too ambitious a film to leave it as a one-and-done experience. A movie this difficult might just open up on subsequent viewings.

5 Most Interesting Wes Anderson Movies, Ranked
Image
Wes Anderson has done it again. Just when cinephiles thought his films couldn’t get any more visually eccentric or narratively offbeat, he goes and drops news of a new movie that’s dripping with retro espionage charm and pastel chaos. The Phoenician Scheme, set to hit theaters in June 2025, already feels like a wild ride—and fans don’t even know the full story yet.

Co-created with his longtime collaborator Roman Coppola, this upcoming black comedy feels like it belongs in a curated art exhibit already—and we don’t even need the plot to be sold on it. The hype machine is officially in motion.

Anderson is the kind of director who builds entire cinematic worlds with obsessive detail. His love for symmetrical shots, color-coded wardrobes, and deadpan humor turns every frame into a painting. Plus, he’s known for rolling with a regular crew—think Bill Murray,...

Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Tees Up Strong Indie Weekend With Angelika Film Center Takeover – Specialty Preview
Image
Focus Features has done a full takeover of the Angelika Film Center with The Phoenician Scheme on all six screens for filmmaker Wes Anderson’s latest. There’s a lobby and café redesign for full immersion, a jazz band, custom cocktails, t-shirts and totes as the film, which clocked a lengthy standing ovation at its recent Cannes world premiere (see Deadline review) bows theatrically in limited release at six locations including NYC’s Alamo Brooklyn and AMC Lincoln Square and AMC’s The Grove, Century City and Burbank in LA.

Around this time in 2023, Anderson’s Asteroid City, also from Focus, delivered a massive jolt to the arthouse and specialty world with a $790k three-day weekend, also at six theaters, including a takeover of the Landmark LA. That opening per-theater average of $132k was the biggest in years for a helmer known to energize the specialty box office. His Grand...

Bill Murray's Phoenician Scheme Cameo Sums Up All Of His Wes Anderson Roles
Image
To paraphrase a famous historical father figure, I come to psychoanalyze Wes Anderson's movies, not Anderson himself. To put it mildly, Anderson's films are suffused with Daddy Issues. From Royal Tenenbaum to Steve Zissou to the fantastic Mr. Fox himself, Anderson's filmography is littered with problematic patriarchs. Yet it'd be inaccurate to label these characters as wholly bad people, for each of them has a journey to take which teaches them how to be better fathers, better leaders, and most of all, better men. While the problematic patriarch is an Anderson trope as much as color-coded costumes and diorama-like sets, the filmmaker has found various ways to play around with the archetype rather than always directly portray it. For instance, "The Darjeeling Limited" is notable in that its father figure is (allegedly) never seen, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" features a hotel concierge acting as a substitute father for his bellhop,...

Bryan Cranston on Returning to the ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Reboot: ‘I’m, Of Course, Naked Again’
Image
Bryan Cranston isn’t slowing down any time soon, most recently reuniting with Wes Anderson for “The Phoenician Scheme,” their latest collaboration following “Asteroid City” in 2023 and “Isle of Dogs” in 2018. In Anderson’s latest, he plays Reagan, the brother of Tom Hanks’ character. We caught up with the actor at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, May 28.

Amid his busy schedule, he will soon return to the “Malcolm in the Middle” reboot, reuniting with original cast members Jane Kaczmarek, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield. “Seeing the family was the best part,” he told IndieWire about returning to the series, which ran for 151 episodes across seven seasons from 2000 to 2006.

“It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and each person,” he said. “All the boys were around the same age, now, that I was when I started 25 years ago.

Wes Anderson's 'The Phoenician Scheme' Lands Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Arriving in theaters later this week, The Phoenician Scheme is Wes Anderson's latest directorial effort, a spy comedy that stars Academy Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro in the lead role. Critics have landed on a verdict for the film, and while some might believe his unique filmmaking style is getting repetitive, most agree that it's another compelling installment in Anderson's filmography. The film is set to hit theaters on May 30, 2025.

As of this writing, The Phoenician Scheme boasts a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 80 reviews by critics. Early reception for the Anderson-directed project claims that it falls well within the formula the filmmaker has crafted over the decades. However, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to enjoy from the crime caper, which features another jaw-dropping call sheet. Read the critics' consensus from the review aggregate website:

"A caper made with all the intricacy of a Rube Goldberg machine,...

Wes Anderson’s Long-Awaited Michael Cera Team-Up Helps the Director Break a Rotten Tomatoes Trend 7 Years in the Making
Image
Whether you love him or not, it's unquestionable that Wes Anderson is one of the most recognizable directors of the past 30 years. With his signature color palette, centered framing, and offbeat, often emotionless characters, Anderson has carved one of the most impressive filmographies in modern cinema. However, recent entries in the visionary's catalog, Asteroid City or The French Dispatch, have received mixed responses from fans, with many still marveling over the auteur's style and others finding his latter work to have fallen into self-parody.

The summer of 2025 has rewarded theatergoers with their latest dose of feature-length Anderson, with The Phoenician Scheme officially released to US audiences on Friday, May 30, 2025, and finally giving viewers the long-awaited combination of Anderson and Michael Cera. Thanks to the movie's early critical response, it seems that the mixed reception of his more recent efforts is to be dispelled, with The Phoenician Scheme already the holder...

Mia Threapleton Idolized Wes Anderson. Then She Became the Breakout Star of His New Movie
Image
If Mia Threapleton had to pick an avatar for her creative awakening as a kid, she might choose a fox. She could have gone with a lion, the animal she’d pretended to be during summer camps and after-school “acting clubs” with her friends, and which gave her an early peek at the thrill of performing for others. Or maybe a 1930s gangster, courtesy of the childhood viewings of Bugsy Malone; Threapleton vividly remembers seeing a very young Jodie Foster, along with dozens of other kid actors pretending to be...

How Wes Anderson Devised ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ – Crew Call Podcast At Cannes
Image
Oscar winner Wes Anderson returns to Deadline’s Crew Call to shed some light on his writing process and how he came up with The Phoenician Scheme, a project he first started breaking around the time of his second Cannes premiere, 2021’s The French Dispatch.

He was looking for an Anthony Quinn type to play the notorious, yet lovable European magnet, Zsa-zsa Korda, and knew the star of French Dispatch, Oscar winner Benicio del Toro, was the guy. Anderson proceeded to send him pages.

At a time when many want more films to be shot in the U.S., sometimes, given the Euro nature of Anderson’s films, that’s not possible. He almost shot Asteroid City in Texas, however, the locale didn’t prove to be convenient for the crew; the filmmaker always is looking for a location which can also accommodate his crew. The last movie he shot...

Wes Anderson's New Black Comedy Debuts With Solid Rt Score, But Where Does It Rank Among His Greatest Hits?
Image
Wes Anderson is a director renowned for his unique visual style and storytelling approach. His films often explore themes such as grief, the loss of innocence, and complex family dynamics. Anderson's signature aesthetic, combined with his frequent use of ensemble casts and quirky narratives, has led critics to classify him as an auteur – a director whose creative vision strongly shapes his work, making his films instantly recognizable and stylistically consistent.

Anderson's career began by earning critical acclaim for Bottle Rocket and Rushmore in the late 1990s, but it was The Royal Tenenbaums in 2001 that earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His subsequent films like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, and Fantastic Mr. Fox furthered his acclaim, the last of which earned a Best Animated Feature nomination. His later successes include Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch,...

Wes Anderson makes fun of Trump tariffs: “Can you hold up the movie in customs?”
Image
The Phoenician Scheme director Wes Anderson has mocked Donald Trump’s proposed 100% tariffs on films made outside the US.

“The tariff is interesting because I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff before,” said Anderson in a tongue-in-cheek response to a question from Screenat the Cannes press conference for his Competition title.

“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but I feel that means he’s saying he’s going to take all the money. And then what do we get? So it’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.

Wes Anderson Calls Trump’s Proposed Tariffs ‘Fascinating’: ‘I Feel Like He’s Saying He’s Going to Take All the Money’
Image
As an American writer-director who now lives and makes his films in Europe, Wes Anderson could be a target for Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on films made outside the U.S. But at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday, Anderson mostly appeared confused by the president’s vague proclamations.

“The tariff is fascinating,” Anderson said when asked about the issue. “I’ve never heard of a 100% tariff. I feel that he’s saying he’s going to take all the money, and then what do we get?”

He grinned and shrugged. “It’s complicated to me. Can you hold up the movie in customs? I want to know the details first. And I’ll hold off on my official answer.”

Anderson made the comments at a press conference with actors Benicio del Toro, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Cera, Mia Threapleton, Riz Ahmed, Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade.

Cannes: Wes Brings The Whimsy in ‘Phoenician Scheme’ Press Conference
Image
Leave it to Wes Anderson to bring a touch of whimsy to the Trump tariff war.

Asked about Trump’s proposal to introduce a 100 percent tariff on “foreign-made movies,” at the Cannes press conference for his new feature, The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson played perplexed.

“I’m not an expert in that area of economics, but a 100 percent tariff? I feel like that means he’s (Trump’s) going to take all of the money, and then what do we get?” the director mused. “Can you hold up the movies in customs? I feel it doesn’t ship that way. Wes Anderson Teases Next Project With Richard Ayoade & Roman Coppola – Cannes
Image
Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does “have a darkness.” He’s collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title.

Anderson didn’t specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson’s: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson’s fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes.

Cannes: Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ scores mixed reviews from critics
Image
The breaking news out of the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday was that Wes Anderson made another Wes Anderson movie.

The Oscar-winning director launched The Phoenician Scheme at the prestigious festival, the fourth time Anderson has premiered one of his projects on the French Riviera following Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City.

“More linear than Asteroid City or The Grand Budapest Hotel and yet significantly harder to follow than either of them, The Phoenician Scheme is the busiest of Anderson’s films, and also — at least on first viewing — the least rewarding,” wrote Indiewire critic David Ehlrich in his mixed review. It’s a sentiment shared by several top critics.

“The swashbuckling sire, the deadpan ingénue, the sans serif font, the one-point perspective — Anderson’s held fast to his favorite elements even as his canvases have gotten broader and his style even more fastidious,” wrote Vulture critic Alison Wilmore.

Wes Anderson’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Scores 7½-Minute Ovation After Cannes Premiere, Leaving One Star In Tears
Image
It’s not Cannes without Wes Anderson, and the Houston native’s The Phoenician Scheme has its world premiere Sunday night in Cannes, notching a 7½-minute ovation. First-time Anderson-film star Mia Threapleton was tearing up as the crowd’s applause continued.

“The only thing really I can think to say — I think of 12 words to say that would stand for everything in this movie,” Anderson said to the audience after the screening. He then proceeded to point at and name-check his castmates who were on hand, along with longtime writing and producing partner Roman Coppola. Here’s how it went down:

Wes Anderson Delights Cannes as ‘Phoenician Scheme’ Lands 6.5-Minute Standing Ovation, Leading Lady Mia Threapleton Overcome With Tears
Image
Wes Anderson has delighted the Cannes Film Festival once more with his latest directorial effort “The Phoenician Scheme,” which played in competition two years after “Asteroid City” did the same at the 2023 festival. “The Phoenician Scheme” earned Anderson and his sprawling cast a 6.5-minute standing ovation.

Anderson’s leading lady Mia Threapleton — who has acting in her blood thanks to mother Kate Winslet — was overcome with emotion as the applause raged on, smiling as tears poured down her face. Flanked by stars Michael Cera and Benicio del Toro, Anderson kept his comments brief, saying: “I can think of about 12 words to say that stand for everything in this movie: Richard Ayoade, Riz, Alexandre, Michael, Mia, Jeffrey, Rupert, Benedict, God and Benicio del Toro.”

“The Phoenician Scheme” stars del Toro as business magnate Zsa-zsa Korda, who happens to be one of the richest men in Europe. Threapleton stars as his daughter,...

Wes Anderson, Benicio Del Toro’s ‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Cannes Premiere Draws Polite Ovation
Image
Wes Anderson has yet again entertained Cannes.

This time, the auteur debuted his hotly-anticipated The Phoenician Scheme at the fest’s Lumière Theatre, arriving by bus — yes, bus — with stars Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera and Riz Ahmed on Sunday night.

Anderson was also joined by Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bill Murray, Rupert Friend, co-writer Roman Coppola and composer Alexandre Desplat on the Palais steps ahead of the premiere.

Receptions at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, in particular for the competition titles, have generally been a little tepid. Anderson was the recipient of a polite six-minute ovation. Mia Threapleton was in tears, hugging Michael Cera during the ovation. After the applause calmed down, Anderson took a brief moment to thank his cast.

Before the movie screened, Anderson and his cast were in good spirits as they took to the Palais steps, waving the weekend farewell on the Croisette.

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Review: Benicio Del Toro Hilariously Dominates Wes Anderson’s Latest All-Star Wes Anderson Movie – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Like Jacques Tati, Woody Allen and Luis Buñuel, there can be no mistaking a movie directed and written by Wes Anderson. An auteur in the truest sense of the word, he is as much a painter with words and visuals that put us unquestionably into part of a brain that sees the world the way he wants to see it. There’s his Oscar-winning masterpiece The Grand Budapest Hotel; animated gems Isle of Dogs and my favorite Wes movie, Fantastic Mr. Fox; and a string of beloved film comedies including The Royal Tannenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom and so many more including his 2024 Oscar-winning short The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. It is good to report that the filmmaker is back in style with his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, after stumbling a bit through the overly narrated and artificial (even for Anderson) Asteroid City, the most recent of his films to debut in Cannes,...

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Review: A Brilliant Benicio del Toro Leads Wes Anderson’s Poignant Narrative Jigsaw Puzzle
Image
It’s been a challenging few years to be a fan of Wes Anderson (not that it’s ever really been easy).

Since the commercial and critical success of The Grand Budapest Hotel, the filmmaker has released works that have doubled down on the quirkiness of his visual style and grown more intellectually meta-textual. One sparked minor controversy (Isle of Dogs) and another inspired more confusion than admiration (The French Dispatch). His most recent feature-length project instigated some eye-rolls (Asteroid City) and a 39-minute short released later that year was mostly ignored (The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, an underrated gem). In general, Anderson’s movies have been criticized for being so insular and indulgent of the auteur’s trademark aesthetics that they distance everyone except the stans and the stars.

The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson’s latest film, won’t have true haters reconsidering their options, but it will entice...

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ Break-Out Mia Threapleton on Joining the Wes Anderson Acting Troupe
Image
It’s easy to get star-struck by a Wes Anderson cast. There are Oscar winners, screen legends and blockbuster stars all occupying the same, impeccably ornamented space. It’s an entirely different experience getting star-struck by the Anderson troupe when you are the one leading his films.

“As a performer, it was amazing to play around within the scenes and try different things out and explore things with the sheer volume of talented people that he amasses,” says Mia Threapleton, “On a personal level, it was the most surreal experience of my life, because I’m suddenly stood next to Tom Hanks, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my god, it’s Woody!’”

Hanks is among the ensemble of The Phoenician Scheme that includes Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Riz Ahmed, where Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera and Threapleton, acting as the starring triumvirate.

The Phoenician Scheme (2025) Movie Review: A Whimsical, Globetrotting Adventure Is Among Wes Anderson’s Funniest Films
Image
Wes Anderson is a filmmaker whose trademark style is entirely distinct, drawing both admiration and frustration from those who have noted the similarities within his work. Anderson’s symmetrical composition, matter-of-fact dialogue, and hand-crafted architecture may give all of his films a similar aesthetic, but there has been a great diversification within the types of genres that he has tackled. Within the last decade of his career, Anderson’s ambitions have turned international. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was a wholesome celebration of a passing pre-war era, “Isle of Dogs” spotlighted the figures of a revolution, and “The French Dispatch” offered an anthology of stories that celebrated the importance of international journalism.

The one exception to this transition was Anderson’s last feature, “Asteroid City,” which reverted to the more familial themes that dominated his early work on “The Royal Tenenbaums” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Anderson’s newest film, “The Phoenician Scheme,...

Billionaires and AI are the true villains in the Mountainhead trailer from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong
Jesse Armstrong
Billionaires aren’t exactly at the top of everyone’s nice list nowadays. With that in mind, perhaps now is the perfect time for Succession creator Jesse Armstrong to bring a trailer for his elite-lampooning film Mountainhead to the forefront. The HBO movie centers on four billionaires – Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, Ramy Youssef – who after escaping to a posh palace in the mountains, discover one of them has unknowingly unleashed chaos.

In the latest Mountainthead trailer, a news report says, “U.N officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools,” pointing toward a colossal blunder on behalf of Cory Michael Smith’s character, Venis. As Venis’s three cohorts brainstorm solutions to his problem, tensions rise as it becomes evident that Venis’s negligence could be the root of their growing concerns. To escape blame, the foursome mounts...

Wes Anderson on ‘The Phoenician Scheme,’ His Cannes Party Bus and Why You Should Always See His Movies Twice
Image
The experience of interviewing Wes Anderson is not unlike the experience of watching a Wes Anderson film. It’s brisk. There are entertaining asides. The material is thoughtful and laced with detail that you will often only recognize in retrospect — sometimes after exiting the theater or, in this case, hanging up the phone.

The occasion of this particular conversation is the Cannes Film Festival. To date, Anderson has premiered three films at the Palais — Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023) — and will be back this year with his latest feature, The Phoenician Scheme. Like the other directors The Hollywood Reporter has called a Legend of the Croisette — from Ken Loach to Nanni Moretti — Anderson, a lover of film in addition to a maker, feels inextricably linked to the festival where cinema is at its most venerated.

The Phoenician Scheme, out May 30 via Focus Features, stars Benicio del Toro as European tycoon Zsa-Zsa Korda,...

11 Oscar contenders with the most to gain at this year’s Cannes Film Festival
Image
Oscar season is ready to start.

The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a lineup that includes new movies from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee, Lynne Ramsay, and more of the world’s top auteurs.

In many ways, the Cannes Film Festival is more important than ever for the awards race. Over the last five years, multiple movies that premiered on the French Riviera have gone on to receive Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, including Oscar winners Parasite and Anora, and nominees Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez. With the 2025 lineup loaded with some highly anticipated titles, it would be considered an upset if at least one or two of the following movies failed to secure eventual Oscar bids in the top categories.

Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, here are the 11 projects...

12 Directors Who Cast Their Family Members In Their Movies
Image
Nepo babies seem to be all the rage in Hollywood right now. You can't swing a stick in this town without hitting someone whose parent is a casting director able to pull some strings to get them a recurring role on a sitcom. Many actors are nepo babies that the general public may be completely unaware of, like Daisy Edgar-Jones having a mother who's a film editor and a father who's an executive for a multimedia company.

It's unclear how much pull the likes of editors, costumers, and set designers have when it comes to getting their family members work in the industry. However, when you're related to a famous director, things suddenly fall into place much more easily. Directors often collaborate closely with the casting department to ensure actors fulfill their visions, and if they feel like it, they can totally give a loved one a part. It may be a small cameo,...

The Cannes/Oscars Connection: Could One of This Year’s Fest Titles Wind Up the Next ‘Anora’?
Image
For many years after the 1955 film Marty won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or and then went on to win the best picture Oscar, there was little additional evidence of a Cannes/Oscars connection. But in the last five years, both Parasite and — just months ago — Anora followed in Marty’s footsteps.

Indeed, within the last year, specifically, the relevance of one event to the other became harder than ever to dispute, as an unprecedented 31 Oscar noms were allocated to films that had played in Cannes — spread between Anora, The Apprentice, Emilia Pérez, Flow, The Girl with the Needle, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and The Substance — and 40 percent of the eventual Oscar winners traced back to the fest, including Anora (best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and film editing), Emilia Pérez (original song), Flow (animated feature) and The Substance...

Andrew Karpen, Bleecker Street CEO, Dies at 59
Image
Andrew Karpen, the respected CEO of Bleecker Street Media who founded the indie distribution company after spending a decade as a top executive with Focus Features, died Monday. He was 59.

He was diagnosed last year with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer, and died in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

“Our industry has lost a giant,” Bleecker Street president Kent Sanderson said in a statement. “Andrew taught us all so much, foremost of which is the value of kindness, honesty, and family above all else. His leadership and courage will inspire all of us at Bleecker Street for the rest of our lives.”

Karpen launched New York-based Bleecker Street in 2014 with the backing of Manoj Bhargava, founder of the 5-hour Energy drink. He named his company with a nod to the old Focus headquarters at 65 Bleecker St.

Wes Anderson movies: All 11 films ranked worst to best
Image
Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let's take a look back at all 11 of Anderson's films, ranked worst to best.

Anderson made his directorial debut with "Bottle Rocket" (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) -- well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman." He...

‘Succession’ Creator Takes Down Tech Bros With Tense and Twisty ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer
Image
Get ready to ascend the heights, because HBO and Max have released the first teaser trailer for Mountainhead, the upcoming dark comedy film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. The film depicts a quartet of extremely wealthy tech gurus who get sucked into the middle of a global crisis. The project stars four high-profile actors that make up the egotistical group:Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith.

The trailer depicts the four friends arriving at a massive ski lodge for a weekend getaway; the group has nearly $400 billion between them, so taking some time for the slopes isn't that unusual. In what appears to be a microcosm of current events, something happens when the global economy starts to shift. "Are you guys getting this? Panic buying and violence?" asks Jeff (Youssef). But the others don't seem to be too concerned. "I think that's why I'm so excited about these atrocities.

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme Trailer Just Dropped and It’s the Most Pretentious Thing I’ve Seen Yet
Image
Few directors have a style as distinctive as Wes Anderson. Having spent decades crafting a unique look for his movies, he went from making somewhat risky films to becoming one of the most sought-after figures in the industry. Very few people like him have existed in the film industry, being so authentically themselves that they end up creating a subgenre of their own.

Being behind classics like The Grand Budapest Hotel, Asteroid City, and Moonrise Kingdom, it is not surprising that fans are waiting for news on any of his movies. Most recently, the trailer for his upcoming film, The Phoenician Scheme, was released, and naturally, it was a conversation starter.

A still from The Phoenician Scheme | Credit: Universal Pictures

However, the theme that the trailer has taken seems to be very interesting when it comes to Anderson’s art style.

Wes Anderson has done it again—or has he?...

“Today, tonight and tomorrow, we rendezvous with every titan and pretend we agree what we already agreed. But, in fact, we don’t.
