Jean-Claude Van Damme: What are his five best movies?
Image
Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Muscles from Brussels. If you grew up in the early nineties, this handsome Belgian was everywhere. With his unique accent, good looks, and a butt he was all but too happy to show off at least once a film, he was the rare action star that was just as popular with the ladies as the dudes. Changing tastes in the mid-nineties meant that his career as a viable lead in theatrical films started to dry up, which wasn’t helped by some off-screen issues he had with drugs (a Hollywood tale as old as time). But, while his contemporary, Steven Seagal, became something of a parody of himself, Jcvd got clean and doubled down on his craft, emerging as a surprisingly potent actor in some Dtv movies that are way better than anyone gives them credit for.

While his days as an A-list lead might be behind him,...

'Prisoner of War' Trailer Finds Scott Adkins Fighting for His Life
Image
John Wick: Chapter 4 star Scott Adkins continues to cement himself as the best-kept secret in action movies, with the actor now combining martial arts spectacle with the drama of war in the first trailer for his upcoming action thriller, Prisoner of War. The movie was picked up for distribution by Well Go USA at the end of last year, with Prisoner of War now all set to land on VOD on September 19, 2025, in the United States. You can check out the gripping footage below.

Directed by Louis Mandylor, who previously shared the screen with Adkins in the Debt Collector franchise, Prisoner of War is based on the unbelievable true story of the Bataan death march, which saw thousands of Filipino and U.S. prisoners of war being forced to walk between 60 and 70 miles following the Japanese victory at the Battle of Bataan. The movie finds Adkins taking the lead...

Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) Revisited – Sci-Fi Action Movie Review
Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Andrei Arlovski in Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009)
It’s time for a new episode of our series Revisited, and with this one we’re looking back at the 2009 sci-action movie Universal Soldier: Regeneration, the attempt to rescue the Universal Soldier franchise after the disappointment of Universal Soldier: The Return in 1999. To hear how it all turned out, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by John Hyams from a screenplay written by Victor Ostrovsky, Universal Soldier: Regeneration has the following synopsis: When a terrorist sect uses destructive android Ngu, a new model from the “Universal Soldier” line of humanlike machines, to seize the atomic reactor at Chernobyl, Luc Deveraux, an older cyborg, is reactivated to save the planet from nuclear Armageddon. Unfortunately, Deveraux will also have to contend with his nemesis, Andrew Scott, a fellow Universal Soldier who’s been recharged by the terrorists. The film stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Andrei ‘The Pitbull’ Arlovski, Mike Pyle,...

The Correct Order To Watch Jean-Claude Van Damme's Universal Soldier Movies
Image
Throughout humanity's long, sad, and seemingly endless history of making war, there has existed a naggingly evergreen question about making the perfect soldier. In a pre-technological age, this question was largely psychological, yet the advent of advanced tech started to open up more possibilities, as well as lead to more dead-ends. To wit: while fully replacing human soldiers with robots would initially seem ingenious, it could also lead to things like malfunctions and the absence of human reasoning and ingenuity. Yet a robot, loaded with a pre-made algorithm, doesn't need to be retrained, and isn't susceptible to the many vulnerabilities a human being is. Surely, there must be a way to combine the two.

Roland Emmerich's 1992 sci-fi action film "Universal Soldier" took this recurring military frustration and turned it into thoughtful genre entertainment. Although Emmerich and his writers (with his old filmmaking partner Dean Devlin chief among them) knew...

'John Wick' Star Scott Adkins’ New WWII Action Thriller Gets Release Update
Image
John Wick star, and still the most underrated action icon fighting the good fight, Scott Adkins will bring his particular set of skills to World War II later this year. Adkins, who is well-known to action fans thanks to his roles in the likes of the Undisputed franchise, Accident Man, Avengement, and One Shot, has finally seen his star rise thanks to his scene-stealing part as Killa Harkan, the head of the German Table, in John Wick: Chapter 4. Now, he’s fighting for his life as a prisoner of war.

New details have now emerged about the project, with the war action thriller changing its title from Death March to Prisoner of War. The movie was picked up for distribution by Well Go USA at the end of last year, with Prisoner of War having now been given a September release window (via Action-Flix).

Kickboxer: Armageddon secures distribution, starts filming soon
Dimitri Logothetis
Eight and a half years ago, Dimitri Logothetis rebooted the Kickboxer franchise by writing and producing Kickboxer: Vengeance, in which Alain Moussi took over the role of Kurt Sloane, the character played by Jean-Claude Van Damme in the original Kickboxer back in 1989, and Van Damme played his martial arts trainer Master Durand. That film was quickly followed by Kickboxer: Retaliation, which Logothetis directed himself. Seven years have passed since the release of that movie, and this entire time we’ve been waiting to hear when Logothetis was going to get the trilogy capper Kickboxer: Armageddon into production. Now, it looks like it’s finally about to happen. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Kickboxer: Armageddon has secured a U.S. and Canada distribution deal with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and is expected to start filming in the spring.

Logothetis, Rob Hickman, and Joel Shapiro are producing the film,...

‘The Gardener’ Review
Image
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michaël Youn, Nawell Madani, Carla Poquin, Jérôme Le Banner, Matthias Quiviger, Kaaris | Written by David Charhon, Vincent De Brus, Sebastien Fechner | Directed by David Charhon

The Gardener (Le Jardinier), not to be confused with the Gary Daniels/Robert Bronzi film, reunites Jean-Claude Van Damme and David Charhon who directed him in The Last Mercenary. And like that film, it’s an action comedy, but with the comedy dialed up a bit higher, and the action a bit more on the brutal side.

This time out, The Muscles From Brussels plays Leo, a man who simply wants to tend to plants on the large estate owned by Serge Shuster Special Adviser to the President of France. Nobody seems quite sure how he ended up with the position, and they think he’s a bit odd, but he does a good job so they’ve let him stay on.

Jean-Claude Van Dammes Universal Soldier Legacy Sequel Is Now Streaming
Image
A brutal and bloody action legacy sequel is now streaming, and finds action movie icon Jean-Claude Van Damme returning to one of his cult classic 80s sci-fi franchises. After leading the first Universal Soldier, which combines science fiction and action into a gloriously no-nonsense B-grade treat, and returning for a few much lesser follow-ups, the franchise was resurrected in 2012 with a legacy sequel led by John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Expendables 2 star Scott Adkins.

Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning sees Van Dammes super soldier Luc Deveraux return to the fray, but with a twist. This time, instead of leading the action as the main protagonist, the legacy sequel brings the character back as the main antagonist, with the final movie following Adkins amnesiac super soldier as he fights to discover who he really is. Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is now available to stream on Prime Video, and you can...

Why A Universal Soldier TV Show Would Outshine Any Other Reboot
Image
It’s been a minute since Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren blessed our screens in a Universal Soldier project. A Universal Soldier TV series reboot seems like a perfect way to get the gang back […]

Jean-Claude Van Damme's Best Performance Is in This Haunting Action Thriller
Image
The 1980s saw the emergence of many of the most popular action stars of all-time, including Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, and Harrison Ford. While each of these stars at least flirted with more prestigious projects throughout their career, Jean-Claude Van Damme has seemingly had no illusions about the quality of the films that he appears in. Films like Bloodsport, Double Impact, Timecop, or Lionheart may not be anyones idea of great cinema, but they certainly benefited from the impressive physicality and unique charisma that Van Damme was always willing to bring to the screen. Van Dammes history of appearing in B-movies made his dramatic turn in the legacy sequel Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning even more of a revelation.

The Burt Reynolds Movie That Got A Big Fat Zero On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Being a movie star is both a blessing and a curse. The blessings are fairly obvious, but, like all things that are too good to be true, they bring with them the seeds for the curse that follows, which is that movie stardom can set actors up for that much greater a fall should they start to slip off their pedestal. Some instances of actors taking a hard fall are deserved when it's to do with their offscreen behavior, yet in instances where it's mostly to do with the projects they're involved with being subpar, it's hard not to feel sorry for them.

Take Burt Reynolds, for instance. By the end of the 1970s he was among the most well-known and highest-paid actors working, and as the 1980s rolled on he continued to work with other name stars and solid filmmakers like Dolly Parton, Don Siegel, Blake Edwards, his buddy Hal Needham,...

This Is Ethan Hawke's Worst Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Most of the time, Ethan Hawke is an indicator of quality -- or, if not that, then an ambition to make something meaningful. He's always taken the craft of acting seriously (something that spurred a good-natured war of attrition between him and Robin Williams while filming "Dead Poets Society"), but he's not haughty about it. He played a vampiric hematologist for The Spierig Brothers in 2009's "Daybreakers" and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as an Ammit-worshipping weirdo who pours glass shards in his shoes for "Moon Knight." Also, let's not forget that time he decked himself out in garish accessories to play the incredibly-named Jolly the Pimp in Luc Besson's eye-popping space opera "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (a reminder that bad people can make spectacular art).

Alas, 2013's "Getaway" is the rare occasion where it's hard to imagine Hawke having signed...

All 8 Jean-Claude Van Damme Sci Fi Movies, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Jean-Claude Van Damme's science fiction films range in quality, with clear winners and losers in the lineup. The Universal Soldier series, featuring Van Damme, is the most famous and strongest of his science fiction offerings. Van Damme's best sci-fi film is Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, which explores the darker implications of the Universal Soldier program.

Primarily known for his work in martial arts films, Jean-Claude Van Damme is also no stranger to the science fiction genre, with eight distinct films in his catalog closely competing for a top slot. Keen to trade shots with firearms just as often as he is to trade punches, Van Damme is a versatile action star that can be introduced into a wide variety of settings, from the grounded and gritty to the outlandishly imaginative. Some of these films even feature Jean-Claude Van Damme's best fight scenes, finding the flexible action star plenty...

New Action Stars: 5 actors who could pull it off
Image
Jake Gyllenhaal is taking a long-awaited stab at action superstardom with his upcoming Prime Video remake of Road House hitting the streamer on March 21st (although it should really be going to theaters). Dev Patel also is making a promising attempt at the genre with his amazing looking Monkey Man hitting theaters in April. Not too long ago, we wrote a piece of JoBlo that asked who the next big action icons might be, and indeed, some fresh blood being worked into the genre is long overdue. Gyllenhaal and Patel both seem like great new additions to the canon, but who else could make it in the genre?

Here are a few stars we think have what it takes to be action heroes:

Zac Efron:

I would have thought you were nuts if you had told me a decade ago that Zac Efron would become an Arnold Schwarzenegger-style muscleman as he got older.

‘Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning’ – The Unexpected Psychological Horror of a Bold Franchise Sequel
Image
These days, most audiences are aware that the law of diminishing returns also applies to movie franchises. That’s why numbered sequels are usually frowned upon when it comes to new releases in established IPs, with producers preferring it when moviegoers forget exactly how many of these rehashed films they’ve seen before. And as a series goes on, it becomes increasingly more difficult for franchises to experiment with their source material, leading to stale experiences and disappointed fans.

Thankfully, there are a handful of exceptions to this rule, and I’d argue that the most surprising of all would be the Universal Soldier franchise. In all honesty, I don’t even think the original 1992 film is all that great, benefiting from the natural charisma of Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren while riding on the coat-tails of an intriguing premise (where deceased soldiers are revived as cybernetic zombies with...

B-Movie Superstar Scott Adkins Is Really Going For It In John Wick: Chapter 4
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

The label "direct-to-video" used to be a death knell for filmmakers and movie fans alike. In the early days of home video, the term typically referred to features that weren't good enough to get theatrical distribution, causing studios to subsequently dump them onto the shelves of Blockbusters and Hollywood Videos, where — via gaudy box art, ridiculous taglines and/or highlighting the name of a slumming movie star or a legit celebrity (who would likely only have a cameo role) — they would try to entice naïve renters to check it out.

It can be exceedingly difficult for a subgenre to change a poor reputation, but everything started to change once theatrical distribution was no longer the only game in Hollywood as video, cable, and streaming services became more ubiquitous. One of the people who has been dragging the name of direct-to-video B-movies out...

Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
‘John Wick 4’ Star Scott Adkins Says His Performance Was Inspired by ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
The “John Wick” franchise has a reputation for razzle-dazzle filmmaking and serving as demo reels for some of the world’s finest – or at least most promising – action movie stars. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is no exception, with Donnie Yen taking center stage alongside franchise star Keanu Reeves, as Hiroyuki Sanada and Marko Zaror lend prestige and support. Bringing the opposite of “prestige,” at least in terms of the role he plays in the Chad Stahelski-directed actioner, is Scott Adkins.

Adkins has made a name for himself as one of the preeminent filmmakers in the world of direct-to-consumer (DVD/VOD/streaming/etc.) action movies. The likes of Adkins, Michael Jai White, Tony Jaa, Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren hold court in low-budget genre flicks helmed by directors like Isaac Florentine, Jesse V. Johnson, Christian Sesma, and the Kirby Brothers, that emphasize quality action sequences delivered with visual...

Universal Soldier Is The One Franchise Scott Adkins Must Return To
Image
Scott Adkins must return for the next Universal Soldier to pay off the last movie's cliffhanger. The Universal Soldier movie franchise only became stranger the more it evolved. From Roland Emmerich's original shoot-em-up to a couple of silly, non-canonical Universal Soldier TV movies or the trippy Day Of Reckoning, there's an entry to suit every mood. Jean-Claude Van Damme's Luc evolved from hero to villain in later outings too, with his performances in his first and final appearances feeling like two completely different characters. Adkins joined the series with the most recent outing, 2012's Day Of Reckoning.

Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning is so suffused with dread and gore that it's basically a horror movie, and finds Adkins John on a quest to find out why Luc murdered his family. During this era, Adkins was making a name for himself as the next big martial arts star. Adkins...

Why It's Time For A Reboot Of Jean-Claude Van Damme's Universal Soldier
Image
After over a decade since its final installment's release, Jean-Claude Van Damme's high-octane sci-fi action franchise Universal Soldier deserves a revisit — but this time as a full-fledged reboot, not as a remake or a sequel. Despite receiving a lukewarm response from viewers and critics, 1992's Universal Soldier succeeded at the box office as a "more brawn, less brain" popcorn flick. Its story was continued by two TV movies that did not include the original cast and characters. Seven years later, Universal Soldier: The Return marked Van Damme's homecoming to the franchise, following which 2009's Universal Soldier: Regeneration reunited the first film's leads, Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.

In 2012, the franchise hit the big screen again with a new installment, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, that added Scott Adkins to the mix alongside Van Damme and Lundgren. However, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning was the last of the movie...

‘Sick’ Stars Gideon Adlon and Bethlehem Million on Bloody Kevin Williamson Slasher [TIFF Interview]
Kevin Williamson
Sick marks Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer writer Kevin Williamson’s return to the slasher arena. Co-written by Williamson and Katelyn Crabb, Sick is directed by John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, “Black Summer”).

The Covid pandemic set thriller occurs during the early lockdown. It follows best friends Parker and Miri quarantined alone at an isolated family lake house. But they’re not alone for long.

The horror feature premiered earlier this week out of TIFF, where our own Joe Lipsett said in his review, “the never-ending attack, and the violence – often filmed in unflinching long takes – is mean and vicious.”

Bloody Disgusting spoke with leads Adlon and Million out of TIFF about working with Williamson and what it’s like shooting a visceral home invasion thriller.

Adlon distilled it down to a single name in horror when asked what it was about the script that enticed the actors.

Oldenburg: Father-Son Filmmakers Peter and John Hyams on the Family Business of Genre Filmmaking and a Shared Desire to “Blow S*** Up”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

“I have a mantra,” says director Peter Hyams. “It was something me and my camera operator, Steve Campanelli had: each morning before we went to shoot we’d put our arms around each other, like football players, and say four things: 1. Go bigger or go home. 2. If it can’t be fixed with a hammer, it can’t be fixed. 3. If it doesn’t fit, force it. 4. Let’s blow shit up.”

As mantras go, it’s hard to argue with the results. With a career that’s included prescient conspiracy thriller Capricorn One (1977), with Elliott Gould and James Brolin; sci-fi Western Outland (1981) with Sean Connery, the Gene Hackman/Anne Archer actioner Narrow Margin (1990) and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s time-traveling fight film Timecop (1994), Hyams, has secured his place in cult cinema history.

It’s also an approach to movie making that informed the career of Hyams’ son,...

Premiering as part of the Midnight Madness slate at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Sick brings Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer writer Kevin Williamson back into the slasher arena. John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, “Black Summer”) directed Sick from a story by Williamson, and it’s being described as a “lean, mean, and wickedly timely slasher.” How timely? Sick is set during the pandemic.

Collider has shared the very first clip from the Williamson-penned Sick today, and it’s a tense little scene that we can’t help but compare to Scream. The ring of a doorbell begins a home invasion from a masked killer, who has already found his way inside the house…

Watch Collider’s exclusive clip below and expect more soon.

Father-Son Directors Peter and John Hyams Get Joint Retrospective at Oldenburg Film Festival
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading indie film fest, will honor father and son genre filmmakers Peter and John Hymas, with a joint retrospective.

Father Peter Hymas is best known for his cult films of the 1970s and 80s, including the conspiracy drama Capricorn One (1977), about a plot to fake a space mission to Mars, the sci-fi Western Outland (1981) starring Sean Connery, and 2010: The Year We Made Contact (1984), a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. In 1994, Hymas scored a late-career hit with Timecop, a time-traveling action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The Mussels from Brussels would play a major role in the career of son John Hymas, who revived Van Damme’s other sci-fi action franchise, Universal Soldier, with two sequels: Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012). Alongside numerous TV directing credits, for such series as NYPD Blue,...

Scott Adkins Thinks Starring in a New Road House Movie Is the Greatest Idea He's Ever Heard
Image
Scott, Mr. No-Stunt-Man-Required, Adkins has no problem making a fan's birthday wish come true. The actor, martial artist, producer, screenwriter and gymnast took to Twitter to respond to a birthday request for Adkins to revive Dalton in a Road House reboot. Fans seem to whole-heartedly agree. He captioned with the response, "Greatest idea I ever heard."

Scott Adkins has made a name for himself as an actor with unbelievable martial arts skills and a true super fan of his predecessors. He's worked and fanboyed out with some of his biggest idols, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Ray Park, you name it. He's been an action hero. But what might make him the perfect person to fill Dalton's tight black t-shirt is his mixture of acting, stunts and the Zen that Patrick Swayze's character uses to keep his composure in what would otherwise be thought of as...

Alone Trailer Drags a Lonely Widow Through a Nightmare in the Woods
Image
Magnolia Pictures has released a trailer for Alone. The upcoming thriller is the work of filmmaker John Hyams. He may not be a name that many people know offhand, but Hyams has been rising through the ranks, directing Netflix's hit zombie series Black Summer, as well as several episodes of Z Nation. But Hyams is taking a detour from the undead for his latest effort, which is a tale of survival horror that, as we can see from the trailer, looks like it is going to be a thoroughly tense experience.

The trailer kicks off with a sweeping overhead shot of the woods, coupled with a woman screaming, "help me." We then take a detour to find a woman, who seems rather on edge, taking a road trip, seemingly to escape. A man who can be described as unsettling approaches her, asking penetrating questions about her journey. That bad vibe proved to be warranted,...

Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor Get Payback in Exclusive Clip
Scott Adkins
We imagine it’s never thrilling to be recognized for your past work. Yet when you have action movie talents like Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor on hand, it makes absolute sense a certain type of fan will crop up—and likely need a likely beat down in some circumstances! That’s at least one humorous takeaway from a new exclusive clip of Payback: Debt Collectors 2, an action-thriller starring Scott Adkins and Louis Mandylor.

In the film, Adkins and Mandylor star as a pair of debt collecting heavies who are muscle for a particular type of bad men—all while avoiding another group entirely that wants them dead. And in the scene we have below, the men known as French and Sue are starting their morning by getting hassled for the fact Mandylor used to star in a direct-to-video martial arts movie named Ninja. While Sue never technically starred in such a movie,...

Scott Adkins Auditioned For Batman and You Can Watch His Audition Video
Doctor Strange and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning actor Scott Adkins was up for the role of Batman at one point before Ben Affleck was ultimately cast in the role for Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

He would have certainly been an interesting choice and all these years later an audition tape has surfaced giving us a glimpse at what he would have been like in the role of Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman.

The video comes from the YouTube channel Fortress of Solitude. It’s pretty interesting to see how much the actor looks like a younger version of Ben Affleck. In the audition video, Adkins is reading a scene from The Dark Knight Rises.

Watch the video and let us know if you think Adkins would have worked as Batman.
