Michelle Williams is ‘dying’ to become the 15th double Emmy winner in Best Limited/Movie Actress
Image
Six years ago, Michelle Williams won the Best Limited/Movie Actress Emmy for her role as actress-dancer Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon (2019). Now, Williams could become the 15th actress to win at least two Emmys in this specific category, thanks to her role on FX's Dying for Sex.

Williams plays Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wild sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.

The last person to win double Emmys in Best Limited/Movie Actress was Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). It took her 10 years to claim the bookend trophy, while Williams could accomplish the feat in just six years. Should Williams prevail, both actresses would also be undefeated in this race.

Chucky Franchise Star Eyed to Play Carrie in Mike Flanagan's Adaptation of Stephen King Story
Image
Mike Flanagan's next Stephen King adaptation following The Life of Chuck will be Carrie, the iconic horror story that was originally adapted into a feature film starring Sissy Spacek. While a deal has yet to be put into place, it's now been reported that the new Carrie White may have been found.

Per Variety, Summer H. Howell is close to signing a deal to play Carrie in Flanagan's Carrie, which will be developed as a TV series this time around. Negotiations are reportedly ongoing, and neither Amazon nor Howell would offer any comment on the news. It has also yet to be officially announced by Amazon that Flanagan's Carrie has been ordered to series, though it's expected that an announcement will be forthcoming soon.

The new Carrie from Flanagan, according to the official logline, will be a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White...

'Nosferatu' Director Reveals the Film's Biggest Influence
Image
Robert Eggers, the director of 2024's notable vampire film Nosferatu, has revealed the influences that he took into account when writing and directing the modern revival of F.W. Murnau's movie of the same name. Surprisingly, it is not a vampire film.

Eggers spoke to Variety about all things Nosferatu, and the director addressed the film's sexual element, which has been present in all Nosferatu adaptations, albeit by the standards of every period they were made in. 1922, Murnau had to conceal the steamy content cleverly. In 1979, Werner Herzog had to do something similar with his version called Nosferatu the Vampyre.

Mike Flanagan Addresses Potential For More The Haunting Shows After Moving From Netflix To Prime Video
Image
Mike Flanagan has addressed the potential for more "The Haunting" TV shows like The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor after moving his future productions from Netflix over to Prime Video. The horror creative produced the two horror miniseries as Netflix exclusives, the first adapting Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name, and the second based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw. Despite critical praise, The Haunting season 3 was never created, with Flanagan later leaving Netflix for Prime Video in 2023.

Now, Flanagan has responded to a question about more The Haunting TV shows on Bluesky, confirming the horror anthology series isn't coming back. However, he has confirmed multiple new series are in the works for Prime Video, specifying that his first for them is going to be an adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie. Mike Flanagan Reveals How He Got Stephen Kings Approval For Carrie TV Show Despite Making Pretty Substantial Changes
Image
As he lines up his next adaptation of the horror author's work, Mike Flanagan explains how he got Stephen King to approve his Carrie TV show. Flanagan is best-known for his work in the horror genre, including writing and directing three other King adaptations, with Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep and the upcoming Life of Chuck, while also being attached to develop a Dark Tower TV show. King's 1974 novel, Carrie, about a misfit teenager who develops telekinetic abilities, has previously been adapted into four movies, as well as a special episode of Riverdale and a Broadway musical.

During a recent interview with MovieWeb, Flanagan opened up about developing the new Carrie TV show. The filmmaker recalls his initial reservation to do so when Amazon MGM Studios approached him to make it, feeling it was "done perfectly" by Brian De Palma with the 1976 movie, though began to realize the timely nature of...

Get ready to dive back into the messy world of one sheltered, telekinetic teen!

Deadline reported today that an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel Carrie will soon be headed to the small screen.

The eight-episode limited series will be helmed by longtime King acolyte Mike Flanagan.

King’s literary debut is half a century old, and it’s been adapted multiple times already.

The most famous version, of course, is the 1976 Brian DePalma film starring Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, and John Travolta.

The Best Movies About Ghosts, from ‘The Haunting’ and ‘Nanny’ to ‘The Others’ and ‘Beetlejuice’
Image
Like witches, vampires, and zombies, ghosts can be scary as hell. But there is something about the stories of lingering dead spirits that can be both awe-inspiring and spooky at once. The often invisible presence of ghosts allows filmmakers to explore the unsettling aspects of character psychology through the use of sound and space. Some of the best ghost stories aren’t scary at all; instead, they liberate directors from the restrictions of space and time to mine spiritual and existential depths. It’s a genre that has attracted some of the medium’s greatest artists to create some of their finest work.

One of the great aspects of ghost stories are their ambiguity, how their presence reflects more on the humans who see them then the spectral beings themselves. Maybe the great, definitive ghost story in the literary world is Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw,” his 1898 novella...

Mike Flanagans New TV Show Is The Haunting Season 3 Replacement Weve Been Waiting For
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Mike Flanagan has received an abundance of praise for his horrifying Netflix series, and although he won't be making a third season of his Haunting anthology, his 2023 series The Fall of the House of Usher is undoubtedly a strong replacement. In 2016, Mike Flanagan came to prominence with his film Ouija: Origin of Evil. In the intervening years, he has created some unforgettable Netflix horror projects such as Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club. However, Flanagan's most terrifying horror shows are The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The Haunting series captured audiences' attention through disturbing content and haunted house atmospheres. The Haunting of Hill House is based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on Henry James' The Turn of the Screw. There's demand for a third season,...

'That's Gone Now': Mike Flanagan Laments Losing One Stephen King Adaptation
Image
With an illustrious and extended bibliography, horror mastermind Stephen King's novels have been adapted into movies and horror shows, and Mike Flanagan is one of the filmmakers who adapted multiple projects. However, he still wishes he could work on more of them.

To promote his upcoming King adaptation, the Tom Hiddleston-led The Life of Chuck, based on the novella from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, Flanagan also told The Hollywood Reporter he has a project that got away. Aside from the upcoming star-studded film, he will also tackle a new adaptation of The Dark Tower, yet he had a different project in mind that never happened. The reason is because, generally, the author doesn't want a filmmaker to have more than one project at a time.

The Turning Ending Explained
Image
The Turning is a reimagined version of The Turn of the Screw with significant differences in setting and character development. The movie doesn't confirm the existence of ghosts haunting the mansion, leaving Kate mentally shaken and unsure of reality. The ambiguous ending of The Turning, criticized by many, prompts an alternate ending where Miles' possession by Peter Quint is left unresolved.

When The Turning was released in 2020, it was panned by critics and left many viewers confused about its ending. Based on the 1898 Henry James horror novella, The Turn of the Screw, The Turning follows Kate Mandell (Mackenzie Davis), a young woman who is hired to become the governess for Miles (Finn Wolfhard) and Flora Fairchild (Brooklynn Prince), the children of a wealthy family after the death of their parents. Kate's primary responsibility is to take care of the children, but that task soon becomes difficult when ghosts suddenly start haunting Miles and Flora.

Mike Flanagan Confirmed To Direct "Radical New" Exorcist Movie - Not Believer Sequel
Image
Mike Flanagan will direct a new Exorcist movie, but not a Believer sequel due to its poor reviews and box office. It is said to be a "radical new take" on the Exorcist franchise. Most details are currently under wraps.

Horror fan favorite writer-director Mike Flanagan will helm a new Exorcist movie, which will not be a sequel to last year's Believer. The iconic franchise was revived in late 2023 with David Gordon Green's The Exorcist: Believer, a legacy sequel and reboot that was meant to kickstart a new franchise in the same vain as his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy. However, poor reviews and an underwhelming box office total halted those plans, and the sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver was pulled from its planned release date amid major creative overhauls.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter confirms Flanagan will direct what is being called a "radical new take" on the Exorcist franchise. Specifics...

Upcoming Book Adaptation Can Be The Perfect Spiritual Sequel To Mike Flanagan's The Haunting
Image
How To Sell A Haunted House could be the perfect unofficial follow-up to Mike Flanagan's The Haunting series. The upcoming horror novel adaptation shares thematic parallels with Flanagan's acclaimed work. Despite the uncertain future of The Haunting series, fans may find solace in Flanagan's other projects and movies like How To Sell A Haunted House.

The third installment of Netflix's The Haunting series never truly materialized, but an upcoming horror book adaptation could be the perfect unofficial follow-up to the Mike Flanagan series. Based on Shirley Jackson's book, The Haunting of Hill House first premiered on Netflix on October 12, 2018. The show was an instant hit and received wide acclaim from viewers and critics. Its success eventually spawned a follow-up series, The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Loosely adapted from Henry James' 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, The Haunting of Bly Manor repeated its predecessor's success, paving the...

How Do The Haunting Of Hill House And Bly Manor Connect?
Image
The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor are both under The Haunting TV series umbrella, sharing themes but not a direct narrative connection. Mike Flanagan, director of both series, has created a successful horror anthology on Netflix with added shows like Midnight Mass. Many actors from The Haunting of Hill House return in The Haunting of Bly Manor, adding to the confusion between the two anthology series.

Netflix found a way to scratch the audience's horror itch in Mike Flanagan's 2018 series The Haunting of Hill House. The supernatural drama is based on Shirley Jackson's 1958 novel of the same name, but its quality was nevertheless a breath of fresh air for the horror genre. Strangely enough, there wasn't anything in the way of a sequel or second season, at least when it comes to official continuations.

However, in 2020, Netflix and Flanagan released The Haunting of Bly Manor,...

The women treat him as a sort of father confessor, but when he publishes an excerpt from what he considers his will be his masterwork “Answered Prayers” in Esquire — a thinly veiled account of their lives and secrets –they feel betrayed and turn their back on their once trusted friend. He spends the rest of his life trying to get back into their good graces.

Everyone knows Capote wrote “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and his superb “In Cold Blood” and was a witty albeit inebriated guest on countless talk shows, but how much do you really know about him?

10 Scariest Black And White Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Black and white horror films rely on light and shadow to create chilling atmospheres, captivating viewers in timeless terrors. Films like Psycho and Carnival of Souls excel in psychological horror, immersing audiences in subtle, plausible frights. The Innocents, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Night of the Living Dead set standards for eerie, unsettling storytelling in monochrome.

Black and white horror films have a unique ability to amplify the sinister imagery and tones, rendering them among the scariest in film history. Devoid of color, monochrome horror movies rely solely on nuanced plays of light and shadow along with striking compositions to generate nail-biting frights. This atmospheric visual simplicity channels viewers’ attention towards the emotional experience rather than superficial distractions. Regardless of era, black and white cinematography lends an air of timeless immediacy and believability to onscreen terrors.

Contrast takes on greater power to convey palpable textures, such as the dank gloom of a haunted house,...

Rod Serling Was Completely Unprepared For The Twilight Zone's First Emmy Win
Image
When Rod Serling won an Emmy for "Outstanding Achievement in Drama" for "The Twilight Zone" in 1960, he was completely taken aback by this well-deserved win. Serling had previously earned several Emmy nominations for the show, having also won two Emmys for "Patterns" and "The Comedian" under the "Best Teleplay Writing" category. However, the writer-producer had good reason to believe that he would not be winning this particular award — he was up against the likes of James Costigan, and his adaptation of "The Turn of the Screw," alongside Loring Mandel, whose "Project Immortality" also emerged as a worthy contender. Costigan's adaptation was especially deemed deserving, as its screenplay was entirely built on visceral suspense, with a brilliant Ingrid Bergman belting out a chilling, memorable performance.

Per Marc Scott Zicree's "The Twilight Zone Companion," Serling was completely unprepared for the win, to the point that he didn't even bother shaving before the broadcast.

Mike Flanagan Would Have Adapted Hell House If His Netflix Haunting Series Had A Season 3

The Mike Flanagan Netflix era has come to an end, as Flanagan and his partner Trevor Macy are leaving the streaming service behind for a new deal with Amazon. That means we likely won't ever get a third season of Flanagan's "Haunting" series, which kicked off with the excellent "The Haunting of Hill House" and continued with "The Haunting of Bly Manor." "Hill House" was a (loose) adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while "Bly Manor" took inspiration from "The Turn of the Screw" and several other ghost stories penned by Henry James. But what tale of terror would Flanagan and company have relied on if the show had returned for a third season?

We now know the answer, thanks to Flanagan himself. The filmmaker has written an introduction for the new Suntup Editions release of Richard Matheson's "Hell House," and in said introduction, Flanagan...

The 13 Edgar Allan Poe Stories to Read If You Loved “The Fall of the House of Usher”
Image
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.

In recent years, Mike Flanagan has become known for emotional adaptations of classic horror literature. After a series of original films, Flanagan brought Stephen King’s famously unfilmable novel Gerald’s Game to life then set his sights on the work of Shirley Jackson. His Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House dramatically expanded the legendary story and brought us all to tears with an intimate examination of parenting through the years. Flanagan followed this with The Haunting of Bly Manor, a mind-bending take on The Turn of the Screw, and The Midnight Club, a spooky mashup of Christopher Pike’s YA bibliography.

For his latest Netflix series, Flanagan tackles the work of Edgar Allan Poe. Following the wealthy Usher family, the director takes some of his trademark liberties to...

Spoiler warning: This article openly discusses the full plot of “The Others.”

It’s been said many times that every love story is a ghost story, and the pop art of the 21st century would seem to suggest that the opposite is also true.

The rise of “elevated horror,” the traumafication of genre narratives, and the ever-increasing role that supernatural forces appear to be playing in arthouse fare have combined to recenter the heartsick longing — romantic or otherwise — that has always haunted tales of grief and loss, even if only from the shadows or in the subtext. These days, a movie or TV show about ghosts is less likely to scare you than it is to make you cry, and the ones that manage to do both tend to rely on the former as a means of accomplishing the latter; look no further than the work of Mike Flanagan, whose...

The Best Characters in Mike Flanagan's The Haunting Anthology, Ranked
Image
The following contains spoilers for the series The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, now streaming on Netflix.

Mike Flanagan created The Haunting Anthology, drawing from a couple of classic horror sources. The Haunting of Hill House follows the Crain family as they move to a new house in the early 1990s, and it's based on the 1959 Shirley Jackson novel of the same name. The Haunting of Bly Manor follows a young governess in a great Victorian house, based on the Henry James novella, The Turn of the Screw.

Flanagan's work is known for its wide cast of characters. Some are compelling, memorable villains, and some are heart-achingly relatable, flawed heroes. Many of the same actors reappear in both series, but between the actors' talents and the characters' depth, it's always a treat rather than a chore to see their faces again.

The Best Horror Movies of the 1960s
Image
When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.

But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

Image
Warning: Some Spoilers lie ahead for The Fall of the House of Usher!

Production designer Laurin Kelsey shares some of the hidden Edgar Allan Poe Easter eggs in The Fall of the House of Usher, including graffiti quoting "The Masque of the Red Death" in Perry's bathroom and stained-glass in a bar depicting Poe's stories. Mike Flanagan, the creator of the show, adapts Poe's works by crafting an overarching story while directly adapting specific tales in each episode, such as "The Black Cat" and "The Raven." Flanagan's adaptation-driven storytelling and inclusion of Poe's poems have contributed to the show's success, earning a 90% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Taking from a variety of the author's works, production designer Laurin Kelsey details some of The Fall of the House of Usher's biggest Edgar Allan Poe Easter eggs. The Netflix horror drama centers on the CEO of a corrupt...

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Review: Mike Flanagan Ends His Partnership With Netflix On A High Note
Image
Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher, like his four previous ones, is a supernatural horror series influenced and inspired by classic works of horror: Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House for Flanagan’s first miniseries, Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw for the follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the pioneers of Gothic horror, for his fifth and last miniseries for Netflix. It might just be Flanagain's best. Each member of the Usher family, modeled on the likes of the Sacklers, the Koch Brothers, and, among others, the Trumps, represent unfettered, unregulated capitalism, of profit over people, of exploitation without consequence. Each, in turn,...

The Mike Flanagan Netflix Horror Shows, Ranked
Image
Gather around, children, and I shall tell you all about the horrors of generational trauma! Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep" and so much more) has created his own little Netflix universe with a series of horror shows that share several cast members as well as several themes, specifically the idea of familial trauma being passed down through the ages and being intertwined with the supernatural.

Flanagan's latest Netflix series is "The Fall of the House of Usher," a spookshow heavily inspired by the works of the Godfather of Goth himself, Edgar Allan Poe. Like most of Flanagan's Netflix horrors, family tragedy plays a big part in the storytelling, which begs the question: How does "Usher" stack up when compared to what's come before? That's where this list comes in handy, as I've set out to rank Flanagan's five Netflix shows from worst to best.

To be clear, almost all of these...

Poe's ‘Fall of the House of Usher’ Explained Ahead of Mike Flanagan's Show
Image
Horror director Mike Flanagan's newest project for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, is set to hit the streaming service on October 12th. Expectations are high for the adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1839 short story, given how Flanagan successfully adapted The Haunting of Hill House, based on the Shirley Jackson novella, and Henry James' The Turn of the Screw as The Haunting of Bly Manor for Netflix. In both of those projects, Flanagan deftly used the source material as inspiration as opposed to a verbatim adaptation, a wise creative choice that allowed for the stories to be played out over multiple episodes, and therefore the freedom to explore the themes that lay under the horrors. This is the same direction Flanagan is taking with The Fall of the House of Usher, which comes with its own challenges, given that it is a short story as opposed to a slightly larger source.

So as a public service, here are a few dozen-plus Emmy winners you may have missed.

Barack Obama – Yes, our 44th President took home an Emmy trophy in 2022 as best narrator for an episode of the doc series “Our Great National Parks.” He thus became the second President to be so honored. The Green Room
Image
François Truffaut goes deep and morbid adapting a Henry James story about a man who chooses to ‘devote himself to his beloved dead.’ He builds an altar-shrine to a departed bride and comrades that didn’t survive the Great War. A sympathetic woman considers aiding him, but his obsession keeps choosing life-negating directions. It’s a weird, morbid but highly understandable tale from the edge of the fantastic. The cinematographer is Néstor Almendros; the film is part of a 4-title François Truffaut Collection.

Why One of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Worst Episodes Is Still Worth Watching
Image
Days after her grandmother’s death, a young professional woman returns to her family home to sort through what was left behind. Wrapped in a blanket to warm herself from the storm raging outside, the woman senses a ghostly presence, one that visited her in a dream the night before. The presence begins to speak, bidding the woman closer, promising that he loves her as much as he once loved her grandmother. Terror grips the woman’s face, but with it, desire.

I’m not describing a beloved rom-com or a scene from a Harlequin novel. This is a scene from Star Trek: The Next Generation; specifically the season seven episode “Sub Rosa.” If you haven’t seen “Sub Rosa,” you may still be very aware of it. Known as the one in which Dr. Beverly Crusher has sex with a candle ghost, “Sub Rosa” regularly ends up on lists...

Mike Flanagan Rewrote The Rules Of Horror For The Haunting Of Bly Manor
Image
Mike Flanagan successfully adapted Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" into an emotional gut-punch of a series exploring grief and trauma. While Flanagan based the limited series on the basic beats of Jackson's gothic horror novel, his tale emerged as a meditation on how familiar bonds forever haunt us.

When Flanagan adapted Henry James' 1988 novella "The Turn of the Screw" into a television series, he decided to come up with a show that reinvented James' tale and was distinct from "Hill House." Although "Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" have common thematic threads, the two stories have different approaches to the concepts that drive the show's hauntings. "Bly Manor" situates its horror in the titular haunted mansion, but how the hauntings begin becomes intertwined with concepts like memory, grief, and oblivion.

How does a ghost haunt? How does this haunting affect the living? Flanagan deftly tackles...

Mike Flanagan Initially Thought The Haunting Of Hill House Would Be Impossible To Adapt
Image
Mike Flanagan's hit Netflix horror series "The Haunting of Hill House" delivers scares and a visceral ghost story — despite not being faithful to its source material. Adapted from Shirley Jackson's 1950 gothic horror novel of the same name, the 10-part series is centered on a family whose lives have been impacted by their traumatic childhood experience living in a haunted house. It heavily relies on psychological tension and its characters' emotional psyches, but it's devastatingly scary — the story remains with you for a long time after the credits roll.

Jackson's novel is famously considered one of the greatest literary ghost stories of all time, despite not featuring any ghosts. Adapting such an acclaimed, beloved novel is no easy feat, which is why creator Mike Flanagan initially believed it was impossible to adapt. There had already been a revered film adaptation from late filmmaker Robert Wise, and Flanagan had no...

Before The Haunting Of Bly Manor, There Was Marlon Brando's The Nightcomers
Image
Mike Flanagan threw viewers a bit of a curveball with the second entry in his "Haunting" anthology series, 2020's "The Haunting of Bly Manor." Where the show's revered first outing, 2018's "The Haunting of Hill House," is horror through and through, its mostly well-received but slightly more divisive second entry is really a gothic romance that just happens to include literal ghosts. Yes, I'm using what you might call the "Crimson Peak" defense, but it applies here all the same.

Perhaps even more than "Hill House," "Bly Manor" plays fast and loose with its source material. Mainly a retelling of Henry James' classic 1898 gothic horror novella "The Turn of the Screw," the series adds elements from James' other works while also filling in the gaps in the romance between doomed lovers Peter Quint and Miss Jessel prior to the story's events. Interestingly, though, it wasn't the first off-shoot of James' novella to do this.
