A spoiler-free review by Loathsome Things: A Horror Movie Podcast
This is one of those little ultra-indie movies using people's actual houses and backyards for sets. That means someone's neighbor is in this movie to play a bit part, and they can't act because they're too busy smiling about the fact they're filming a scene for a movie. So, go into this movie with that set firmly in your expectations.
That said, this was a fun watch! It's trying to be high-concept, and is endearing for the attempt. There's a cool paint monster that looks like it'd be a hit at an EDM concert. There's plenty of cigarette young people drinking to back yards in their 20s. Also, maybe something about computer programming and human psychology. Who can say?
The two main actors carry the film through perplexing scene transitions and loud soundtrack (I was impressed to hear my favorite Handsome Boy Modeling School track eating up budget in this flick). There are some enjoyable practical effects, some predictable plot twists, and just enough story motion to keep me from turning it off.
Overall, it's a fine movie to have on while writing or drawing. Don't pay too close attention and don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. I'm interested to see what this cast and crew does next!
