James Franco in 127 Hours (2010)

FAQ

127 Hours

FAQ

127 Hours is based on the autobiography Between a Rock and a Hard Place (2004) by Aron Ralston.

The real Ralston insisted the film be as authentic as possible before production. When he saw the finished film he said that he felt the movie was, "so factually accurate it is as close to a documentary as you can get and still be a drama." One part that was invented for the movie was Aron's meeting with and subsequent guiding of the other two hikers at the start of this trip.

No. About 70% of the film takes place in the canyon.

Aron amputated his arm above his wrist. Rescue crews returned to the canyon and recovered the remains of his hand and wrist. The rock was so heavy that they had to use a hydraulic jack to free the remains, which were later cremated. Aron scattered the ashes over the boulder where he was trapped.

...during the opening credits: "Never Hear Surf Music Again" by Free Blood

...just after he gets trapped and tries to remove the boulder by pushing it: "Liberation Begins" by A.R. Rahman

...during the flashback of the sunrise: "Touch of the Sun" by A. R. Rahman.

...during the Monday sequence: "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers.

...during the flashback where they party in the car: "Ça Plane Pour Moi" by Plastic Bertrand

...during the dream sequence: "Liberation in a Dream" by A.R. Rahman

...when he sees the boy on the sofa: A cappella of "If I Rise" by A.R. Rahman

...during the amputation scene: "Liberation in a Dream" by A.R. Rhaman (even though there's a song called "Liberation" on the soundtrack, "Liberation in a Dream" is used.)

...after he hikes before the rescue helicopter comes: "Festival" by Sigur Rós.

...during the end credits: "If I Rise" by A. R. Rahman and Dido.

Aron was seeking precisely where the bone broke. There are two bones in the forearm, and he wanted to try to make the second bone break in the exact same place. He howls in glee when he realizes that he did so. Ralston wrote in his book that the real miracle was not that he cut himself loose, but that he was able to cut himself loose because the bones snapped in the same place.
