Wasted Time

The ending for this movie should've happened about 30 minutes in and then it could've been interesting. We could've seen the terrible side effects of their experiment.

Instead, we get 75 minutes of build up for 15 minutes of pay off.

Overall, a very good idea that was squandered in the execution.

The atmosphere and characters were well developed. But their full potential never realizzed.

The writers and directors should go back to the drawing board and rewrite the entire movie using the final scene as the jumping off point about 30 minutes into the story.

Only then would they have something truly worth watching.

Had the potential to be good but missed the mark

I suppose the overall story of this movie is good. The problem for me is that it takes way too long to get to the point. Storywise, nothing really interesting happens until the second half of the movie. The first half is boring. If the first half were cut out, the second half might actually be good as a short film. I think Marshmallow would've been so much better if the last scene of the movie was the focus of the story. To me, the last 10 minutes of the movie were the best part but not enough to recommend it. I give this movie a 5.4 so I'll round down to 5. I guess it wasnt terrible. Overall it was just boring.

an unpolished gem

I really enjoyed this,

starts like it's going to be a summer camp slasher, but already different as the kids are not 30 year old actors pretending to be 17 year olds, its 13 year olds pretending to be 13 year olds...

the twist was good, and explains a lot, obviously it also raises a lot of plot holes but think it was solid enough.

The last minute or two was great, and could have been made more of but like the sudden impact of it.

Overall was really enjoyable, there is very little gore / deaths if your expecting that from a summer camp slasher your might be disappointed.

It was different and i love that, yeah was very rough round the edges and with a bigger budget obviously could have been better but think everything was good enough, the acting was good as always a risk when you have to use so many young kids in a horror movie, which i guess is why it's normally done by 30 year olds pretending to be in high school.

An annoying modern common theme in movies

There's a common theme amongst modern movies and I'm over it.

The movie stands alone as its own. It's unique, it has a great twist, takes kinda long to get going and will make you pull your hair out trying to figure out what's happening but in all, just feels a little like a waste of time.

But the annoying theme!

Please stop disguising movies. Modern movies will make you think it's about one thing but it's about something totally different. Watching the trailer you'd think this was a slasher/horror movie, it's not.

Overall it has a great plot but poorly executed in my opinion. Didn't even need to go "the doctor route" or pretend to be a 80s 90s horror movie type, clearly misleading.

Had potential but almost seems like it was two different movies bumping heads over which was gonna take the forefront. Kind of a miss.

Even a decent plot twist doesn't make a good film.

I won't spoil anything here but I have to get this off my chest - this movie is an absolute mess.

The opening sets a tone that the movie immediately forgets about and then drifts off into a huge disappointment.

The only actor that could act was Paul Soter and you could see he was making an effort even though his character was a forgettable one.

I'm not going to say anything else about the movie other than "screaming isn't acting" and "cliches are cliches for a reason".

Skip to the ending if you REALLY want to know the "twist" but don't waste your time on this one as there are way more original and interesting films one could watch like "Cerdita" from 2022.

Yeah, watch "Cerdita" instead.

Marshmallow isn't perfect, but it's clever, stylish, and a refreshing modern entry in the summer camp slasher subgenre.

I recently watched Marshmallow (2025) in theaters. The story follows a socially awkward young man who isn't thrilled about returning to summer camp-but hopes it might help him make some friends. Soon after arriving, he starts noticing strange things happening, and violent acts begin to unfold. It quickly becomes clear that something is off about camp this year. Could it all be connected to the traditional campfire story they always tell?

The film is directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio, making his directorial debut, and stars Kue Lawrence (Good Girls), Giorgia Whigham (The Punisher), Corbin Bernsen (Major League I & II), Alysia Reiner (Orange is the New Black), and Miya Cech (Beef).

For fans of 80s summer camp slashers, this is a modern twist on the genre-with a Cabin in the Woods vibe and even some science fiction elements thrown in. The acting is strong across the board, and the cinematography stands out. The practical effects are especially impressive-classic, straightforward gore that fits the genre perfectly and is executed with precision.

The plot maintains a steady sense of mystery, though the final reveal might be easier to guess than the director intended. That said, I really liked the direction the story took. I just wish they had shown a bit more at the end, especially after teasing us with such solid effects throughout.

In conclusion, Marshmallow isn't perfect, but it's clever, stylish, and a refreshing modern entry in the summer camp slasher subgenre. I'd rate it a 6.5-7/10 and strongly recommend it to horror fans.

The real victims were my ears.

Do not watch this on headphones, unless you like ripping them off your head and throwing them across the room as the entire cast of kids have the most annoying high-pitched screams, turned up to 11, complete with excrutiatingly loud banging noises instead of a proper soundtrack.

This is a poorly directed movie about some kids at summer camp where nothing is as it seems. The story has some pretty good ideas. It's a shame it takes so long to get going and it ends just as it gets interesting.

It's a not wholly original, but it's a sci-fi tale with a lot of potential for a rewrite and remake. In more experienced hands, this could be filled with existential dread. As it stands, it's filled with piercing audio, sluggish pacing and tropes aplenty.

Really enjoyed this

Although this looks like a summer camp slasher, it certainly Is not.

Instead it is a very entertaining horror, sci fi with some really good characters and some absolutely fantastic child acting.

"Doink" played by Max Malas is excellent and I suspect has a very bright future and our lead played by Kue Lawrence is also superb.

The plot had me guessing for a while and I think it worked although I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea. The final twist was interesting and eludes to a pretty grim immediate future for those involved.

Overall I thought the premise was good and the movie was pretty well put together. With elements of stranger things, black mirror and infinity pool, director Daniel DelPurgatorio has created a nicely paced, intelligent and entertaining movie.

The idea is not bad and it has an ambiguous meaning.

The idea is not bad and it has an ambiguous meaning.

In fact, the child may be growing up through that stage.

The development is quite clumsy until the second half of the movie, but looking back, it may have been intended.

It is sad because I can see why grandfather looked at grandson with such a mournful look from the beginning after the completion.

Falls Flat With a Ridiculous Twist

Marshmallow starts strong, with a creepy summer camp setting and a cast of likable kids, but it ultimately fumbles its big twist-and with it, the whole story.

The atmosphere is there: isolated cabins, campfire stories, and a real sense of dread as things begin to unravel. The young cast-especially Kue Lawrence, Kai Cech, and Max Malas-bring some authentic energy to the screen, and for a while, it feels like this could be a fresh take on the camp horror genre.

But then the "twist" hits..... Instead of a traditional slasher, Marshmallow shifts into something more sci-fi and existential, introducing a whole new layer that's... interesting, but poorly executed. Without spoiling too much, the film suddenly asks the audience to reconsider everything they've seen-but without giving us the time or substance to really unpack it. It's ambitious, sure, but it comes across more as a gimmick than a revelation.

Themes of grief and identity are hinted at but barely explored, and the ambiguous ending feels less thought-provoking and more like the writers ran out of runway. It wants to be deep, but without a strong foundation, the final moments just don't land.

In the end, Marshmallow is a bold swing that doesn't quite connect. It has atmosphere and potential, but the ridiculous twist ending melts any momentum it had built.

A clever idea that doesn't stick the landing.

Nostalgic fun

This movie surprised us, we had much more fun with it than we expected! The summer camp setting felt nostalgic and a bit bittersweet and the main kid did a really good job with his part. Couple annoying characters but i guess its part of the story flow lol. Did not expect the plot twist at all!

Pros:
  • all kids did a great job and we really liked their acting. The lead one was awasome! The kid can act
  • general vibe reminded me of Steven King's stories; awkward kid finding his crowd
  • plot twist was really good!

Cons:
  • the explanation for big reveal felt a bit underbaked, didn't bother us too much though.

Yeah, Awesome Ideas

I loved the ideas in this movie, as far fetched as some of them are. The film seems tightly wound for a while, and too serious, and then kind of comes apart and there's execution issues all over it. Was it a good time though? Yes. Are the ideas great sci-fi? Yeah, I think it was innovative and a really fun late night watch. Points for entertainment and innovation and that has to mean something when so many movies are made today simply to put on in the background when you doom scroll and fold your clothes. If you're into science fiction and interesting indie filmmaking then you should give this a watch.

Wasted potential unless there is a sequel

Even though I keep up really well with recent horror releases, Marshmallow completely passed me by without me noticing it. The premise sounded interesting and the poster looked intriguing, which was enough for me to give it a try.

We have the typical summer camp setting with a young boy who is fearful and shy. After making a few friends and encountering a mean bully, he and the other kids are told a horror story about an evil doctor who used to live in the area. After that, the young boy becomes even more frightened, and his constant visions and the voices in his head aren't making things any better.

The movie really takes its time with character development, and even though I enjoyed the characters and love the summer camp setting, it became a little boring after a while. Once the pacing picks up, the film definitely shifts in tone, but something about it feels off and not very well executed. It was too tame for a slasher and too generic for the "sci-fi" label it has on IMDb.

At some point, we are introduced to a plot twist that definitely got me excited, but the movie never really does anything with it. We get a final scene that looks pretty interesting and made me want to see more, which should be a good sign in theory. However, this movie just felt like wasted potential. That plot twist and the last scene should have happened much earlier and led into a final act that could have made the movie far more engaging.

As a standalone film, it felt disappointing and overall unsatisfying. The movie was stylish and had a soundtrack reminiscent of Stranger Things, and that, combined with the summer camp setting, created a nice atmosphere. However, the script was definitely an issue, focusing too much on boring elements instead of developing what is shown in the final scene.

Overall, it's not a terrible movie, but I couldn't help leaving it with an unsatisfied feeling. I'm still curious to see if they plan to continue this story, but until then, this was average at best. It would have worked great as a pilot episode for a new TV series, but definitely not as a standalone movie. [5.2/10]

Not bad, lost a point in the last 2 minutes.

Marshmallow is a film about a bit of a dorky, shy kid who gets sent to summer camp. He has similar troubles fitting in there, and to make matters worse he believes he's seeing the local campfire legend prowling the woods at night.

The premise is pretty straight forward, and is executed in a pretty straight forward manner. The movie takes the obvious twist, which is handled fine and ultimately a red herring. There's a second twist that changes the entire context of the movie, that's the part of the movie I really enjoyed. Unfortunately they threw another very obvious twist at the very end that completely undid the good will the movie had earned. If they had just committed more to the idea behind that second part, maybe introduced it a little earlier so they could explore it more, this would have been a better movie.

horror? Sort of

So this one interesting. In the beginning it just seemed like a PG version of F13. Kinda boring when you're used to the gorier stuff. Councilors are stereotypical, the jock and his girl, the stoner, the bossy chick and the friend of campers, and of course the older guy who's the camp director. But it was cute with the bullied nerd, making friends with the other loners at camp, even seems to be a little girl that maybe likes him so I kept watching.

I was not expecting what I got at all! Not going to give anything away but about halfway through it starts turning into something else and that twist is pretty good, kind of a horror of it's own when you realize it. So while it's not an out and out horror slasher I think it's still a horror movie of some type.

Depending on what you have to choose from it might be a good choice to waste 90 minutes.

much better than it needs to be

Every now and again a creator comes along who wonders what it would be like to mix together a whole bunch of genres which, in reality, don't mix well. Like, for example, a western where the hero has to fight aliens. Not kidding. That was a real movie. Marshmallow is one of these. Surprisingly, for most of the run, the viewer is never quite sure what sort of movie they are actually watching. A coming-of-age? A slasher? Horror? The dissonance built into the script actually makes the film even more interesting than it might otherwise have been. And the technical values are superb, again better than you might expect from this kind of film with this kind of budget. Recommended. ((Designated "IMDb Top Reviewer." A Surprising Twist on the Camp Slasher

Intriguing idea but not great execution

I forget who said "an idea doesn't matter if you can't develop it properly" and that kind of sums up this movie. The twists definitely surprised me, but they felt like ideas that never got developed properly. There's no clear reason for a lot of what happens It felt like while they did have clear dots for where they wanted the story to go, they couldn't figure out how to connect those dots. It seems like whoever was the "idea man" needs to search for someone who is great at developing stories but can't come up with anything original and they can kind of combine their powers. The movie has kind of a Jordan Peele vibe where it's sci-fi/horror more than horror/sci-fi if that makes sense. Definitely interesting enough i'd be curious if a sequel came out, i wouldn't pay to watch a sequel I'd just stream it, but... if the sequel was good enough then I'd pay to see the third installment. Kind of a shame really, I did enjoy the concept of it quite a bit.

Someone dropped the marshmallow and left it in the bonfire...

Granted, while I was indeed not familiar with this 2025 horror movie titled "Marshmallow", from writer Andy Greskoviak and director Daniel DelPurgatorio, I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch it, given my love of all things horror.

Sure, I didn't know what to expect from a movie with such a title, but perhaps I would be in for a treat.

And while "Marshmallow" did start out nicely enough, it quickly nosedived and became a boring movie to sit through. The storyline virtually plummeted from being a fairly interesting and entertaining one to being one that I just stopped caring about and found my attention drifting elsewhere. So writer Andy Greskoviak failed to pen down a great script for director Daniel DelPurgatorio to bring to the screen.

The only familiar face on the screen was Corbin Bernsen, and he was not even in the movie for five minutes. Though I have to say that I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen, so that was something that worked in favor of the movie. And I will say that the acting performances were fair.

As for the horror elements of "Marshmallow", well director Daniel DelPurgatorio just didn't cut it for me here, pardon the pun. The movie started out interestingly enough, but succumbed to a monotonous and pointless pacing and direction. And the movie never recovered from that nosedive.

"Marshmallow" is not a movie I would recommend to horror fans, as it was simply too bland, pointless and forgettable.

My rating of director Daniel DelPurgatorio's 2025 movie "Marshmallow" lands on a most generous three out of ten stars.

A very small fix

I don't usually review movies but I watch and rate 5-6 a week. This movie is a perfect entry level kids horror movie. Like a goosebumps episode. Perfect to scare a kid or introduce it to the wonderful horror genre. My low rate is because it's not for adults and I didn't know it when I watched it. At least the first part is not for adults, the second has a few smart plot twists which I really enjoyed and found smart. But again the first part was boring for me and keeps my rating low. If in the imdb page it was mentioned as horror Family syfy then my rating will definitely be the same as everyone's around 6 out of 10.

Insanely clever.

But, of course, as convoluted as the Matrix in how much practical sense it makes.

I had doubts when it started getting all ethereal and abstract but the resolution rectifies that bit.

It's just highly unlikely that all that the plot entails could be done in the timeline as suggested. I guess maybe. It's best not to start over-analyzing how this situation would be handled.

And I am not sure the final final final ending worked, was necessary and/or didn't cheapen the entire premise.

I don't want a sequel.

I did like solo Broken Lizard guy branching out. In fact all the counselors and kids had surprising depth for a movie of this kind. I really liked Doink - that lad has a future.
