Brilliant

I thought this was so hilarious with some absolute brilliant one literally. 3 very strong brilliant women playing different characters but all funny in different ways. I really hope there is a second season as binge watched the first series in an afternoon 🤗

Hullarious!

Short comedy, easy watch. We needed something to pass the time and we ended up loving it.

Wish there were more episodes!

Fingers crossed for another series!

A grower

This show grows on you.

I had avoided this show as it looked rubbish. However after watching a clip I decided to watch all the episodes in one.

They were thoroughly enjoyable and easy to watch. The laughs were subtle but they are there.

The characters are well developed and they work well together as a big family.

I hope I see more episodes and series in the future.

Proper Northern Sitcom

Set in the typically less-than-glamorous Hull, this UK sitcom follows a down-to-earth cast of characters tackling relatable everyday dramas. Truly working class and with proper accents, the three leading ladies foil each other well, each with their individual characteristics, but combining together for a no-nonsense approach to the annoyances in life.

A very easy watch, Hullraisers grows on you with each passing episode until the series is over all too soon. Whilst still having plots that are a big deal on screen, it never strays from being light-hearted, as everyone catastophises their own mini-squabbles with the mums from school and other such cliques and characters everyone in the UK can recognise in their own lives.

Great to have a proper working class comedy on our screens

Very well written with lots of great one liners.

The characters are authentic and relatable. Just proper decent working class people living in decent houses having a proper laugh (at least trying to) not like the other grim northern sitcoms we are treated to.

I think it will only get better as we become more familiar with the characters.

A few clichés (eating pot noodles in the street) but it's a sitcom and we don't take ourselves too seriously in the north.

Beverly Hullbillies

I've written reviews for each season of "Hullraisers" that you can find against the show's final episodes. Now the show is confirmed as not returning, I decided to post something here, to sum up my overall feelings about it.

Toni (Leah Brotherhead) is a mother and aspiring actress, living in Hull. Her older sister Paula (Sinead Matthews) is married to Dane (Yanick Ghanty) and has two children of her own, including Ashley (Natalie Davies) who is almost an adult herself. Rana (Taj Atwal) is Toni's best friend and Dane's sister and who is enjoying her single, childless, life. Toni struggles to cling to her youthful optimism, as it's drained away by parenthood.

I thought that the first season of "Hullraisers" was fine. It's not particularly hilarious, but neither is it a disastrous debacle. I really liked the performances though from our three leads. Leah Brotherhead came to my attention in "Zomboat" a few years back, this is a somewhat more realistic role though and, to my mind, she acquits herself to it well. All three roles could, in another version of the show, been reduced to their one defining characteristic, Toni is unfulfilled, Paula is a fishwife, and Rana is a maneater but there's enough shades to each performance to move beyond that.

The Hull setting doesn't get that much play and, having spent a bit of time there, the accents are a little more "generic Yorkshire/Lancashire" than specifically Humberside. I do like that its set in a more realistic working-class background and not extreme poverty though.

I would say that I thought the series improved in the second season, so much so that I would have looked forward to a third run.

Binge worthy goodness

I wasn't expecting much from this, thought it be the latest one and done after the awful witch finder and Newark Newark.

It's really good, natural, daft, it doesn't try too hard to create ridiculous plots, they all feel like things that could happen. The lead 3 women are all great.

Toni though is genuinely hilarious, I'm a 35 year old guy with no kids, so I'm not even the target but I loved it. Hope they do way more series and longer than 6 episodes.

This is feel good tv. Can never get too much of that. Any silly blokes saying women aren't funny.... Watch this!

Only lasted ten minutes

Sorry but only lasted ten minutes of them murdering the accent. Sounds more Manchester then 'Ull. It's like making the Likely Lads with actors from the home counties. It might turn out to be funny but can't watch any more. I even laughed when I read someone say it was a generic Northern accent!! Sounds nothing like a Mackem, Geordie, Cumbrian or Northumbrian accent the commenter like the voice coach must originate far from the north.

Brilliant ...

So good to see a sitcom that is well written, cast, directed and not overacted. I am a cynic, not much makes me laugh, or at least chuckle quite a lot.

Realistic, recognisable, endearing characters, attitudes n scenarios condensed into exaggerated, seriously smile/laugh slightly out loud comedy gold. Been a long time since anything this good has made it onto the screen.

Brilliant ...

Binge worthy and funny

Saw the trailer and thought I'd give it a go. Totally engrossed as it's easy to get into and before I knew it i'd watched the entire 6 episodes in one evening. Really funny one liners and could totally relate to some of the storyline and chaos especially Toni. Good lighthearted comedy especially at a time the world is in chaos. Defintely need to have another season and more than 6 episodes pllllleassse!:

Funny, likable characters, well acted... moreish!

Funny, easy to watch and full of one liners - binged the series in a night!

Some brilliant acting and really likeable characters. I particularly like the relationship between Toni and her mother in law (Felicity Montagu - AKA Lynn from Partridge!!!).

I've seen comments about dodgy accents and don't hear it myself. I'm from Yorkshire and spent years working on the east Yorkshire coast, so I should know.

Only complaint is that 6 episodes wasn't enough. More please!

Funny, lighthearted, easy watching

Genuinely funny, down to earth comedy, with excellent characters who are really likeable. Didn't expect much so I am pleasantly surprised! Well done Lucy Beaumont! I hope this gets a second series!

Aaarrrggghhhh!!!!

The unfunniest comedy since records began. I seriously cannot imagine what possessed the production company for them to actually bother filming this crud. As funny as watching paint dry, but not as rewarding.

Def a bingeworthy series

This is hilarious. So many one liners that crack you up. The script writer has done a great job and the characters are uncouth, loud and so so funny.

Hope they make a second season as 6 episodes just seems too few.

Suprisngly good

An actual good program from channel four for a change.

The episodes can be quite slow and there is a real danger of the characters storylines falling into the cliché standars of sitcoms.

As someone from 'ull, this is funny.

I completely disagree with aluminum4291's review, this is written by Lucy Beaumont, a Hull lass through and through, and very proud of her roots, and this shows in the humour, locations and dialogue of the program.

The acting is good, the scripting very good and in no way treats the city of inhabitants in a contemptuous way.

All in all, worth a watch and certainly laugh out loud funny.

Brilliant programme

I left the TV on after the return of Derry Girls the other week and Hullraisers came on with the continuity announcer calling it "It's a bit like if we did 'Sex in the City' in the UK and actually made it good!". I can't stand those kind of programmes normally, but I gave this a go and got into it straight away.

Based on an Israeli comedy called 'Haverot' ('Tiny Mum'), 'Hullraisers' tells the story of sisters Paula and Toni and their long time best friend (and also Paula's sister-in-law) Rana. The trio try their best to juggle the hardships of every day life from families to relationships.

One of the things I love about this programme so much is the fact that it depicts the three main characters facing ordinary, mundain, everyday challenges but in a funny, "we all know it's all going to go wrong" way. And the stories are universal and very relatable - as are the characters.

The entire cast is brilliant, but Leah Brotherhead is particularly excellent as Toni. She has a brilliant screen presence and makes Toni likeable and someone you root for.

It's far from being the usual average Channel 4 comedy.

It's not funny...

Channel four is dying and it's programmes like this that are partially responsible. I wanted to like it and it is likeable I suppose but it's not funny. Writers - Just a gentle reminder... comedies need to be funny. More writers are needed if this is going to get better. Oh well back to watching re runs of peep show...

Really quite good!

Saw the second series being advertised and thought I'll give the first a go and I'm very glad I did!

The writing and characters are absolutely superb,I was in stitches quite a few times .

I don't think there is a weak character among all these actors and they play off each other superbly.

A special mention has to go out to Leah brotherhead though who plays 'tuuuurneee' I think she is absolutely brilliant what a great comedy actress !

From the way she delivers her hilarious lines to her facial expressions she is fantastic!

I'm very glad I had a punt on the first series and am looking forward to the second.

Really good show.

Brilliant

Absolutely loved this. Every character is a character. Great writing, great one liners and brilliant acting especially from the female cast.

Can't say much more. Give it a go. I've watched 2 seasons 2x in one week just to pick up on the lines and the acting nuance, especially from Paula.

Taxpayers money largely down the drain

Part funded by the British taxpayer, sadly, whilst it has moments of amusement, there are no laughs to be found.

Created by Lucy Beaumont, of Meet the Richardsons fame, and whilst I can applaud the creation of a new comedy centered around what most Brits would consider a downtrodden area of the country, it seems that more thought went into the local characterisations rather than the actual writing.

The cast are very talented but they can only do so much with a story and script lacking in thought.

I had high hopes but the balloon deflated rather too quickly.

Barnaclestormers

Always good to see Sinead Matthews in something.

Unfortunately this feels very formulaic. It's far from being a new Royle Family or Pulling.

And where is the unique "smell of Hull"? Or did they just set this in Hull in order to support a punning title?
