A riveting courtroom comedy with hard-hitting social commentary!

Courtroom dramas have always been a tricky proposition for Malayalam and recently, the genre has delivered inconsistent returns. Although I personally liked Nivin Pauly's audacious genre-bender "Mahaveeryar (2022)" that turned the courtroom into a fantasy vehicle, the film was an abject failure at the box office, suffering a similar fate as that of more generic legal dramas like "Vaashi (2022)" and the shambolic "Naradan (2022)". "Nna, Thaan Case Kodu" had reached a zenith in pre-release publicity after Kunchacko Boban's ridiculously goofy dance steps to the cult retro song "Devadoothar Padi" went viral, and thankfully the Ratheesh Balakrishna Poduval directorial bucks the trend, delivering a sparkling, witty film that finely balances its laughs with hard-hitting social commentary.

Kunchacko stars as "Rameshan" a former burglar who has seemingly reformed his ways but still ends up in the crosshairs of an apathetic legal system as he is arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Determined to prove that he has left his life of crime behind him to his new lady love, Rameshan decides to taken on the legal system, arguing his own case and digging out the most unexpected witnesses and legal loopholes to find his pay out of his peculiar predicament.

Director Ratheesh Balakrishna Poduval has used an innovative street casting method to arrive at his secondary string of actors, finding talent from the laymen living in and around his shoot locations. And the payoff is a rich, motley crew of realistic, salt-of-the-earth performers with the wisecracking magistrate and a scheming opposition lawyer the standouts. This casting method has also given an air of rustic, rooted authenticity to proceedings which becomes crucial to drive home the film's socially relevant messages - be it systemic corruption, rising fuel prices or how inaccessible the legal system is for the common man.

Kunchacko Boban continues on his splendid run of picking offbeat scripts with unconventional characters and delivers a third straight must-watch film after "Bheemante Vazhi (2021)" and "Pada (2022)". With his upcoming release "Ariyippu (2022)", a collaboration with the ever-dependable Mahesh Narayanan, already creating waves after getting selected for the prestigious Locarno Film Festival, the best seems to be yet to come for Malayalam's chocolate-boy turned serious character actor! Nna Ningal Poy Padam Kaanu. Highly recommended!!

A courtroom drama wrapped in satire and plenty of heart! [+80%]

Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval's third directorial venture is a poignantly written and superbly executed political satire under the guise of a courtroom drama. His trademark situational humor and sharp dialogues are among the film's notable positives. It also helps that Kunchacko Boban continues his string of excellent performances, playing a character we couldn't imagine him do in his early days. Backing up the lead performance are fantastic feats from the entire supporting cast that includes several newcomers amid a few familiar faces like the effervescent Rajesh Madhavan (who also handpicked these performers as a casting director).

It's difficult not to mention talents like P. P. Kunhikrishnan (the adorable magistrate) alongside Advocates Shukkur and Krishnan who end up as an unforgettable duo. Gayathrie, who plays the female lead, shines in pretty much every scene she's in. Dawn Vincent's musical score lends gravitas to several punchy courtroom scenes. It's rare to see the audience clap so much for counter-dialogues but I was able to witness that today after a long time. There are also smart jabs taken at (literally) everyone in power, making us realize the irony in our understanding of a functional democracy. The gradual hike in petrol prices shown on the film's time-stamps is also quite an inventive move.

Unlike, say Jana Gana Mana, which was loud and slightly over-the-top in its storytelling, Nna Thaan Case Kodu remains grounded all through, and the humor is certainly refreshing.

Highly recommended

It's a different kind of movie experience which has several fresh approaches from the filmmakers side. A must watch in theater to fully immerse yourself into that rare once in a while kind of movie experience. Earnest performances from Kunchakko Bobban and a troup of new face actors ensured tight and entertaining way of delivering the cinema experience in its intended way.

Absolutely much needed topic of discussion for the time.

Stunning movie. Must watch with your whole family.

I am going to watch it again. Amazing plot. And what more to say Kunjacko's acting has brought goosebumps to the ruling party.

Evolution of boban

Awesome movie. Kunjako boban Nd team done a great job. Except lead role the rest of the roles were handled by unknown actors and they haven't left any thing that they are new to the screen and acting as experts in acting. Hat's off to the makers and the editing also. Best regards.

Simple and entertaining

Comedy really worked and helps to drive the story forward. Small story expanded to its maximum, onetime watchable. Good acting by chakochan. Court room scenes are good and really loved the acting of the judge .

Dumb thief to brilliant criminal lawyer... so illogical

RATED 6/10 Language: Malayalam Source: Hotstar

The title is so opt for this movie. The title is used very well in the last part of court argument and delivered impactful social message.

Just because of these last 45 minutes portion, we need to bear the first half. I felt there is enough fun moments in the first half. Other than that the scenes and situation are not looks logical and felt so unrealistic.

Kunchako performance is great but his chanracter transformation is so illogical. Is he selfish/cunning/kind/innocent/brilliant/dumb? Because he shown all these shades from the beginning to end. He is transforming from one dumb thief to brilliant criminal lawyer towards end. At one point his life is in threat and another point he is free.

Looks like the screenplay is so jarred and felt so disjointed.

Malayalam Cinema at it's finest - courtroom set satire starring Kunchacko 2.0

When you have Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval (Android Kunjappan) directing the movie & Kunchacko 2.0 starring it in; you are bound to flock to the cinemas to watch it. Nna Thaan Case Kodu (Sue Me) is yet another engrossing movie from the Malayalam film industry. A courtroom set satire that keeps you hooked and gives you hope that justice will be delivered in a similar manner even in the real world.

Rajeevan is a petty thief who has now mend his ways after falling in love. But one night, he is caught on camera while scaling the wall of a politician's house. Charged with a crime he hasn't committed, Rajeevan is determined to clear his name to prove his innocence to his wife.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu takes its own sweet time to deliver a verdict and that is good because that is how our judicial system functions. The poor get convicted with ease whereas the high & mighty don't even appear in court. Nna Thaan portrays this in a very hilarious yet effective manner. Kunchacko Boban's resurgence (post-chocolate boy days) continues as he delivers yet another exceptional performance. Kunchacko's act is supplemented by some memorable supporting acts by Gayathrie Shankar, Rajesh Madhavan, P P Kunhikrishnan, Unnimaya Prasad among others.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu delivers on all fronts and takes a jab at the lack of basic civic amenities in the state and gives us a verdict that we all dream of. Hats off to #RatheeshBalakrishnanPoduval, #kunchacks and others for this gem of a movie that addresses an important issue in the most hilarious way possible.

Indian courtroom drama that sometimes lacks authenticity and makes up for it through feel-good twists and comedy

Above par at best.

The movie from start to end makes little sense. A thief who is accused of stealing have to prove his innocence and corrupt system is trying to push him down every step of the way and he manages to rise above them and become victorious that's the basic plot of the movie.

I have seen many court room drama and have to say this is one of the worst mafe court room drama ever.

Either the reviewers are trying to hype the movie or they haven't seen 'jolly llb' or 'Jau tithe khau'.

There are so many plot points which remains unanswered in this movie, for example, the mla accuses protagonist of stealing 1 lac and important documents but we get zero explanation on that part. The music is mind numbing and songs are placed on such random points that you start questioning directors intelligence at this point.

What I can say about this movie is this is absolute cringe fest at worst and above par at best.

Best movie of 2022 (Malyalam)

In a satire, the performance is a prominent pillar, and that stands out here well, the story although wrapped in comedy, makes our blood boiling as it clearly shows the incumbent government. While we the people stand helpless, the best movie of 2022 in malyalam is what I feel this one is, a must watch.

I guess Not my cup of tea

The movie is carried by the realistic style performances of the whole cast. It takes much time for take off which never really takes off. The point the movie is trying to prove is intended to be a social but it just feels like a blant dull court room drama with nothing major to mention. However, the movie and its unpredictable climax adds to the saving factor of the whole tale. Kunjacko Boban needs to be applauded for taking such an off beat role and nailing it to perfection. Although the first half was a weak experience for me, the film compensates in the second half with all the witness actors who performed quite well to entertain the audience.

In the end, a near average variety flick.

story told in a dragging way

Nna Thaan Case Kodu was a great illustration of the domino effect, how one pothole led to a chain of incidents causing havoc. The storytelling, on the other hand, was executed in a dragging way that required patience to follow through

DELICIOUS

-Humor! Expect A LOT of odd humor at the most unexpected moments, humor in the dialogues and characters' mannerisms😂

-The cinematographer was talking to us throughout the movie. The camera was telling us who and what to carefully observe.

-What to say about the acting? P. E. R. F. E. C. T. I. O. N. At the highest levels; from Kunchacko Boban to the witnesses in the courtroom, and even the background actors, splendid!

-The movie was filled with different characters who enriched the story, e.g. The artists performing at the religious events, the MLA's entourage, the lovers in the autorickshaw, etc

-Let's pause on the pigeons inside the courtroom 🤣 This was a good representation of the way the common man must feel about the courtroom: a safe place where one can seek justice even against giants like politicians

-Showing the petrol price hike over the years was an ingenious idea to underline people's challenges to keep up with rising costs while having little finances

BLAND

-You need patience to watch the film because the story took a while to sizzle. Actually, it was around 45 minutes or so when we were ready to quit that the narrative became captivating

-Gayathrie was the only one who performed poorly; she wore the same facial expression and didn't behave like a full-term pregnant woman

-The pace of the movie was slow with some exciting areas here and there; it was easy to get distracted at times. Maybe the director wanted us to feel the pace of Rajeevan's life?🤔

Interesting and engaging

This is well acted and superbly scripted movie, so it was interesting and engaging even though lacks a real good story and sort of has logical gaps.

The real highlight and reason to watch this movie is the realistic, rustic and natural script and screenplay - this elevates what could possibly be a pretentious, preachy social commentary to an engaging and enjoyable movie.

The camera work, score (especially the natural sounds) and cinematography is pretty commendable as well.

There are plenty of plot holes and quite a few logical gaps, also there is quite a bit of lag and towards the climax it does meander a bit and becomes a bit boring and clumsy, but definitely worth a watch.

Please be honest to yourself

This is NOT a good film. It is actually quite mediocre. I believe the writer did not know how to write jokes which were actually funny. So he inserted some "Brishtam" jokes. Let us be honest. Take the worst Srinivasan or Jagadish film of the 90s. It would be a hundred times more funnier than this rubbish. Beware of new generation writers who use organs and fluids and excretions to make jokes. I am not saying they are wrong. Even the great Chaucher used them to make toilet humor in his poem. But in this film, it just seemed lazy.

Tuneless background scores are a part and parcel of Malayalam cinema these days. Just go back to the 80s and 90s on Youtube when Johnson Mash, Shyam and SP Venkatesh used to deliver wonderful background scores. The background score in this film is a joke. This film would have been tolerable with a decent background score.

Malayalam cinema is mostly a fraud these days. I really long for the late 80s to the mid 90s when they knew how to make an entertaining movie. Nna Thaan Case Kodu is NOT an entertaining movie. It is just middling entertainment that overstays its welcome.

A courtroom drama at its satirical best. The audience should be sued if they miss out on this film.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022) : Brief Review -

A courtroom drama at its satirical best. The audience should be sued if they miss out on this film. Malayalam cinema strikes again! And to be honest, I wouldn't have expected any other film industry in India to make such a stunning satire. What Is Satire? Of those 2 crore people who go to the theatre and 10 crore who watch films on TV or mobile, almost 90% don't know the real meaning of satire. I don't care if they didn't understand the subtle satirical moments and films before, but I would be sad if they didn't understand Nna Thaan Case Kodu. This is the story of a common man at his most basic level. You can't go simpler than this while making a realistic satire that can be enjoyed by the masses and the classes both. It is a very rare combo, and hats off to Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval for finding the right balance. The story revolves around a reformed thief's fight for justice when an innocent act to defend himself places him at loggerheads with the high and mighty of society. In the first half, you see how the district court functions on ground level, and then in the second half, there is a political angle that is very much familiar to anybody in India. The potholes on the roads are not a big issue. This is what a normal person believes, be it from the middle class or higher class. But what if you have to take action against it? What if you discover that this common pothole is the root cause of a slew of accidents and political plots? Nna Thaan Case Kodu shows you this small topic through its lens, and you see the magnified images of the problems that cause a lot of harm to society and sometimes to yourself. The performances, humour, screenplay, dialogues, direction and the high-concept thinking of taking a dig at our freaking annoying system through the weapon of satire are all that makes Nna Thaan Case Kodu a Must See! Don't miss it.

Simple But Powerful

One of the best Malayalam courtroom drama which deals with the power of a common man. The politics in the whole film seems to be good and make us to think each and everyone in the country is equal Infront of law.
