Hanne Palmquist talks plans for HBO Nordic and Sherlock Holmes heads to Finland.

Goteborg Film Festival’s first Nordic award for Best TV Drama Script, worth $23,000 (Sek 200,000) and funded by the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, has been presented to Nobel screenwriters Mette M Bolstad and Stephen Uhlander.

Nrk’s Nobel is a Homeland-style drama about a Norwegian Lieutenant returning home from duty in Afghanistan who discovers a political conspiracy.

The prize’s jury included Lars Blomgren of Filmlance, producer Gudrun Giddings, consultant Isabelle Pechcou and critic Leena Virtanen.

They said of Nobel: “The script was precise, well-structured and solid. This is a strong, unpredictable drama with a sense of fresh realism. The story was thrilling and worked well also as a metaphor of the global instability between war and peace…This TV series has an impressive complexity in the scriptwriting, no loose ends and no inconsistency. There is no filter to the truth. It is so transparent...

The 11th Pune International Film Festival (January 10-17, 2013) has announced its slate for 2013. These films will be screened under nine sections: International Competition, Marathi Competition, Student Competition (live action and animation), Global Cinema, Country Focus, Retrospective, Tribute, Indian Cinema and Regional Cinema.

Israeli film Hayuta and Berl by Amir Manor will open the festival on 10th January. See the schedule here.

Feature films at the festival contend for the Best Film, Best Director and Government of Maharashtra “Sant Tukaram” Best International Marathi Film Award. The Marathi films in competition will vie for the Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography Awards. The Student Competition will also have a Special Award and a cash prize.

Eighty contemporary films from more than 50 countries will be screened under the Global Cinema section. Hungary and South Korea will be the Countries in Focus with the screening of six and seven films, respectively.

Hella W directed by Juha Wuolijoki, has been picked up by Guido Rud's FilmSharks International, acquiring worldwide rights outside of Scandinavia to the the Finnish film. Sandrew Metronome Distribution will handle Scandinavian distribution to the follow-up to Christmas Story, a box office success in Finland, reports Variety. Hella W is set between 1920 and 1954, and tells the true story of Hella Wuolijoki, a woman entrepreneur as well as playwright and politician. Story follows her ostracism at the hands of Finland's intelligentsia, which disliked the popularity and incendiary politics of her plays. Many of those plays are no regarded as being modern classics.
