Anna Ben in Sara's (2021)

Sara's

6/10

A simple, predictable feel-good flick with its assorted clichés! [+61%]

The best thing about Sara'S is that it stays focused on its titular character Sara (Anna Ben) and her perspective, over all else. Director Jude Anthany Joseph is back with yet another simple, feel-good family comedy touching upon a delicate topic - that of (choice in) childbirth. And once again, we have well-written characters being played by neat performers. While Anna Ben and Sunny Wayne form the lead pair of Sara & Jeevan, a host of family-member characters also take up screen-space.

The best among those are writer Benny P Nayarambalam (in his acting debut, playing Sara's sweet dad) and Mallika Sukumaran (playing Jeevan's overbearing mom). Wayne's performance felt fine in the first half but a bit plastic in the second. Anna Ben continues to impress with her uniquely cute mannerisms and puts up a serious face when needed. After a breezy first hour with equal dollops of romance, situational humour (that works in parts), and a Shaan Rahman score, writer Akshay Hareesh brings up the dilemma. Sara never wanted to have kids. Now, she's forced to choose between her budding filmmaker career and having a child.

Sara's problems, most of which arise owing to her gender, are realistically portrayed in the movie. That being said, her character still comes with many privileges - a doting understanding dad, a swanky apartment, and the lack of a financial struggle, to mention a few. In reality, the issues faced by women are multitudinous. In its journey to a predictably positive finale, Sara'S also gives memorable arcs to characters like Anjali (Meera Nair), a seasoned actress. Certain clichés such as the presence of Siddique's character only to provide decisional closure (oh there's more, plenty more!) and Vineeth Sreenivasan humming Shaan's melodies simply can't be avoided, I guess. A movie star seething on set is yet another tedious trope.

Clean and neat

A story of the struggles faced by an aspiring young woman who wants to be a director. When it comes to family, loves and kids, it will be more stress than our very own dream. This explains it very well. A clean and neat way of showing the struggles is the noticeable and appreciatable. Here they have took the route of not too emotional and so easy ways to show their plot. Thats good but not a good enough. In between somehow film struggled to move further. Thats all the flaws i have noticed so far. Otherwise, its a decent watch.

A good attempt

Sara's is a good attempt at making the Indian audience understand that reproduction at the end of the day is a woman's choice. However, the movie just seems like a movie starting off as exaggerated and then meandering along the lines of reality. Seems quite artificial. Anna Ben is alright, but seems miscast and Sunny Wayne as always doesn't look the part as is the case in most movies. It's a decent watch, but nothing special.

movie for parents.

Sara's concluded with a message which has lot of importance in current living situation. Society defined the happiness of a person. This movie raised their concern on this kind of defined happiness by the society with the support of motherhood. The perception on motherhood in India is playing important role in family life. Most of the families are running by adjusting and comprising each personality, freedom and happiness. They compromised the life for the parents relatives and society to keep the happiness just becouse to satisfy others. This movie nicely roasted this ideology with good and strong situation. I don't feel that casting isn't that much good but the direction was good enough to cover all the negatives. Worth watchable nmovie for traditional parents.

Movie is made for movie lovers and not for moral policing

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. After 'om shanti Oshana', I became fan of Jude. His quirky and light hearted way of storytelling can touch any movie lover.

Now coming to the problematic side of the society. I am really appalled by the negative reviews of people. People are rating 1,2,3 just because they didn't find the author's ending perspective according to their taste. How ridiculous! This is not only a question of creative liberty. But also a freedom of speech. I think people who think they need happy ending, they got it. But there is no way one can generalize happiness. These reviewers need to grow up soon. Or stick to watching saas-bahu drama instead where everything will be done to please society.

Sara's much needed message!

Sara's message is loud and clear with the right amount of frequency to shatter the glasses of conventional thoughts harboured by an average Indian patriarchal society. The much relevant message is enunciated in the director's flamboyant style with a handful of sweet, fun moments, but there are long phases where it becomes unheard, perhaps due to an evident, unrealistic infusion of theme-related ideas and a lack of depth in Sara's character development.

The prominent thing about the flick is the message that is conveyed and a much needed one at that. I was apprehensive about how the Malayalee audience would receive it, especially the older generations, who are bound by the chains of patriarchal traditions. I was surprised to see the overwhelming response that the flick, especially its message has been able to muster, at least in the social media. But I am sure that if I were to ask my grandparents, they will be dead against Sara and her decisions.

With respect to the flick though, it becomes clear that the theme of the flick was decided first, understanding the pulse of the people. What resulted in the execution is a relatively large infusion of the theme-related ideas onto the screen resulting in a lack of authenticity. The character of Sara too seemed to lack proper depth. Had it been written better and included the influences that Sara had while growing up prompting her to move away from the "normal", the flick could have been probably a lot better.

Even so, in the director's usual flamboyant style of execution with quite a few fun, sweet moments, Sara's is a good watch and its message should inspire women to break free from the shackles of patriarchy and its unwavering conventions.

One sided narrative of motherhood

The movie sends a wrong message that motherhood and career are conflicting. It is one thing to respect a woman's right to chose abortion against motherhood, but another to glamorize it.

Thank God, the movie is neither inspiring nor noteworthy.

A one time watch about parenting

It is a good one time watch with a must talk on parenting. It is one topic no one talks about. Thanks to the script writer who wrote it and the director who brought it to light without it being preachy. It shows both sides, those who are good at parenting and those who are not without speaking much about it.

As usual, Anna Ben was good and so did Mallika Sukumaran. I wish they had casted some good actor rather than Sunny Wayne (as the character could have used some good emotions) and also the actress who played the role of the old actress. Rest of the actors did their parts well.

Sara's

It was a good movie. Simple, but could deal very well with its political side tooo... After Om shanti Oshana, I think, jude anthany could make a reasonable move through the film. First half is very cool and spontaneous and second half has its complete essence. Anna ben was rocking as Sara. As the movie is dealt with a very relevant and familiar subject, everyone can easily grasp it. Even if its plot is small, they could well present it.

Old story in a new bottle

Like Jude's previous movies this is also a woman oriented subject but much more serious concept than his previous movies.

The movie starts with the introduction of Sara (Anna ben) who decides she would not give birth to a child in her life. The first some potions made me think that Jude is still in the hangover of his first movie "Om Shanthi Oshana." It took some time for the movie to get on its track in that part time the director tried not to make boring with some funny elements and he was partially success in that.

By the end of the movie it just comes to a repeated track that every women oriented movies try to speak out and the sad thing is that the life of a woman who wants her family support to build her career is getting support only in films, in real life it is not happening and the current situation says that all.

Feel good movie

Sara's is a average feel-good movie and one time watchable. Tells the story of a women try to achieve her goal. We have already seen many movies about making a dream movie concept. But in this movie the only difference is that the main character is a girl and she abort her child to achieve her dream. First half was boring and cliche scenes of old movies. But the second half was good and a feel good ending.

Sara's Review

Sara's is a sweet, breezy romantic drama with a very salient message for the audience. Director Jude Anthany Joseph beautifully showcases the prevailing nuances of an orthodox family outfit. Soothing Music, swift screenplay, and a stunning performance from the protagonist Anna this one deserves a watch for its bona fide storytelling of choices you make in life that define you. The Last Scene makes you laugh like anything.

Not exceptional but not bad either

It's just a watchable film that stays relevant because of the societal norms around us. Body autonomy and abortion is not a huge discussion subject in India and generally, the awareness around it is sparse. Dealing with that subject with the right amount of progressiveness while making it only uncomfortable enough to understand things yet keeping it lively and comfortable for every type of viewer is where the film manages to work. It's cleverly made so that most of the Malayali audience can watch and enjoy it. Even though it doesn't break new grounds it manages to remind and educate a few things without being preachy even though that is the whole point of the movie.
