Jamie Lee Curtis Calls Out ‘Freakier Friday’ Critic For Being “A Tad Harsh”
Image
Although actors are often advised not to read the reviews, one critic’s takedown of Freakier Friday caught Jamie Lee Curtis‘ attention.

The Oscar winner, who reprises her role as Tess Coleman, recently called out Time critic Stephanie Zacharek for her “harsh” review of the Disney body-swap sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday.

Quoting Zacharek’s review, the outlet captioned an Instagram post on Friday, “No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003’s buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy Freaky Friday.”

“Seems a Tad Harsh. Some people Love it. Me being one,” wrote Curtis in a comment.

Despite Zacharek’s review, Freakier Friday is Certified Fresh with a 73% review average and 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, on track for a $30M-$32M opening.

Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite in Freakier Friday, which sees Tess’ daughter Anna Coleman (Lohan) facing challenges with her own blended family,...

Lena Dunham Explains Why Her Hit Show Was 'Really Disappointing'
Image
Lena Dunham's Girls was a successful show that ran for six seasons. Dunham herself has admitted some people were "really disappointed" with an aspect of the series.

Girls aired in 2012, and the four main characters - played by Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Dunham herself - were all white. Ahead of her show Too Much, Dunham spoke to The Independentabout the comedy that made her a star while expressing concerns about its lack of diversity.

“I think one of the profound issues around Girls,” she told the outlet, “was that there was so little real estate for women in television that if you had a show called Girls, which is such a monolithic name, it sounds like it’s describing all the girls in all the places. And so if it’s not reflecting a multitude of experiences, I understand how that would be really disappointing to people.

Questlove on Sly Stone: ‘His Artistry Came With a Burden’
Image
Sly Stone’s journey highlights the difficulty of showing emotions, something that is even more difficult for Black people in the U.S. Expressing feelings at times felt dangerous for us. You could get laughed at, ridiculed, teased, ostracized, punched, or killed. To protect themselves, black people adopted a “cool” exterior — acting as if they had no feelings — which hid their true emotions and led to feeling numb inside.

This struggle can feel like being a goldfish in a bowl, constantly watched by others, making it hard to be real.

Predator: Killer of Killers co-director Josh Wassung provides some insight into a potential Alien Easter egg that eagle-eyed viewers have noticed. Killer of Killers breaks new ground in the Predator franchise, as it is not only the first animated movie in the main continuity, but also the first anthology. In an interview with ScreenRant's own Joe Deckelmeier, Wassung would neither confirm nor deny the Easter egg, particularly as it connects to the Alien franchise. However, it does remain a possibility that it was an intentional reference. He said:

‘Thunderbolts*’ Cast and Where You Have Seen Them Before
Image
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is looking to rejuvenate the MCU, which continues to struggle with creative fatigue and what seems like endless franchise bloat. With initial reviews rolling in, Thunderbolts* feels like a make-or-break sort of deal for the franchise – one that many believe has been coasting on fumes since Endgame. For it, Marvel’s using the “dirty half-dozen” – a scrappy lineup of antiheroes, battered operatives, and familiar side characters who find themselves suddenly pushed into the spotlight.

As the final film in Phase 5, Thunderbolts* follows Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, hesitantly stepping into a leadership role against a CIA handler who’d happily throw her under the bus. Initial reactions to the film, nonetheless, suggest that it’s messier than your average Marvel outing, but the silver lining is that it is more character-driven. And while the asterisk in the title may feel like a punchline, the cast brings enough...

'The Pitt's Noah Wyle Reveals His Mom's "Ptsd" Reaction to the Hit Medical Drama
Image
Fans and critics of Max's hit new show The Pitt have praised the series for being one of the most realistic medical dramas ever created, and rightfully so. It certainly doesn't shy away from some gory wounds, nor does it sugarcoat the effect that working in an emergency room has on the many men and women who work tirelessly to save lives. The series is so real that star Noah Wyle recently revealed the heartbreaking reaction his mom had to it, as she herself was a nurse for 20 years.

Appearing on NPR's Fresh Air yesterday, Wyle spoke about his mom's reaction to one scene in particular in The Pitt, which comes in Episode 13, "7:00 P.M." This Nicole Kidman Thriller on Prime Is the Most-Watched — and Critics Say It’s “A Ton of Bloody Fun”
Image
Nicole Kidman has been on a hot streak for the last 35 years. Despite having risen to prominence multiple decades ago, she continues to topline quality films and series like a starlet half her age. Her talent is so profound that it transcends sexist and agist industry practices that put actresses of a certain age out to pasture, leaving them to play a matriarch or similar. Her impressive career trajectory is a testament to her talent, universal appeal, and staying power. With all that in mind, you likely won’t be surprised to learn that Kidman stars in the most-watched horror thriller on the Prime Video platform today.

Kidman toplines Holland, a mixture of genre tropes and dark comedy from Mimi Cave (who horror fans might remember from Fresh). The flick is a Prime original that just debuted on the platform late last month (March 28th).

Cave helmed the project from...

Tom Hardy Reveals the Real Reason for the 8-Year Gap Between Seasons of His Hit Drama Series
Image
Actor Tom Hardy may be currently starring in Paramount+’s new crime drama series, MobLand, but in 2017 he co-created and starred in the period drama Taboo. Although it was meant to have another season, it’s now been eight years since the series, which also starred Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Leo Bill, Jessie Buckley, Oona Chaplin, Mark Gatiss, Tom Hollander, and Jonathan Price, aired its last episode.

Hardy co-created Taboo with Steven Knight, who also created Peaky Blinders, and Hardy’s father, Edward “Chips” Hardy. Ridley Scott served as an executive producer. The series followed James Keziah Delaney (Hardy) as he returned to London during the War of 1812 in an effort to rebuild his late father’s shipping empire.

Why Has Taboo Season 2 Taken So Long?

Now, after eight long years, Hardy has confirmed that work on a second season of Taboo has begun. Per MovieWeb, Hardy discussed why it has taken so long between seasons.

American Idol Eliminates Half of Season 23 in Hollywood Week — Did Your Favorites Survive the Arena?
Image
“Can’t we just keep them all?” Carrie Underwood asked during Monday’s American Idol, which marked her first time suffering through Hollywood Week from the other side of the judges’ table.

And her stress was completely understandable. Having to narrow 144 singers down to 62 would have anyone crying out for Jesus to take the wheel — not to mention the added pressure that came up with the return of the Idol “Arena,” a musical lion’s den in which each contestant performed at random while surrounded by their entire competition.

For starters, Eddie’s promised position in the fire department fell through due to a hiring freeze, forcing him to become a rideshare driver — and a chatty one at that. 10 Horror Characters Who Shouldn't Have Survived, Ranked
Image
Movies are nothing without their characters, as they drive the story, whether fans love or hate them. Horror movies also rely on characters, with many of the genre’s tropes built around character archetypes. Everyone should know about the harbinger, who’s usually that creepy elderly guy local to the area who warns the main characters about danger and is promptly ignored. Then there’s the bimbo best friend built entirely on misogyny, who’s undeniably gorgeous, not the brightest, and sex-positive, and almost always dies after a rendezvous with the jock character. That’s not even considering the slasher or seemingly unstoppable monster threatening their lives.

Usually, only one character is guaranteed to survive a horror movie: the final girl or guy. Like Laurie Strode in Halloween, many surviving characters are highly beloved and well-known. But others are insufferable or simply implausible. Whether it be because of blood loss,...

Daisy Edgar-Jones Says Male Co-Stars Glen Powell, Paul Mescal and Sebastian Stan Were Never Angry About Her Being Top Billed Over Them: ‘That’s Why They’re So Successful’
Image
Daisy Edgar-Jones said in an interview with Elle Magazine that she is quite fortunate her A-list male co-stars have never taken issue with her being the lead star over them. Edgar-Jones joked that she’s basically “worked with all of the internet’s boyfriends,” so much so that she’s just got “Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler left.”

“I’m lucky that every actor I’ve worked with has been incredibly supportive of me being the lead,” she added on a more serious note. “Glen, Sebastian, Paul, all of them. I think that’s why they’re so successful and so loved and so good: that they are so generous,...

If you’re on the hunt for a series that fully lives up to the hype, look no further than Netflix’s most recent addition — Adolescence. The drama quickly picked up steam on the streamer, soon nabbing the ever-coveted title of a Certified Fresh pick on Rotten Tomatoes, even going so far as to boast a nearly perfect critics’ approval rating of 98%. But don’t take our word for it, as there are more than 24 million viewers who have already taken a dive into the Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham co-created, gut-wrenching miniseries. The first wave of numbers was tallied and in just four days, a whopping 24.3 million subscribers tuned into the platform to see what all the buzz was about. 'Holland' Review: Nicole Kidman Gets Stuck in a Messy, 'Fargo'-esque Midwestern Mystery
Image
Movies like Holland are typically Nicole Kidman's bread and butter. MimiCave's follow-up to the horror-comedy Fresh is a Fargo-like caper film with extramarital affairs, murder, a unique sense of fashion, and an unlikely setting, all of which are right in the Oscar-winning actress' wheelhouse. If you've ever been to the town of Holland, Michigan, you'll know it's a setting ripe for a movie setting. It has a distinctly European feel to it, complete with German stores and windmills.

‘Holland’ Review: Mimi Cave’s Thriller Is an Inert Vision of White Female Dissatisfaction
Image
“Look closer,” exhorted the tagline for a certain 1999 best picture winner that could just as easily apply to Mimi Cave’s thriller Holland, which seeks to find the rot beneath the veneer of American suburbia. In Fresh, Cave’s feature-length directorial debut from 2022, misogyny is literalized as cannibalism, but the rot is harder to boil down to a simple metaphor here, underlying everything like decayed animal matter that feeds a bed of tulips. Narration bookends the film, but it’s aloof and tidy, as if Holland doesn’t seem to want us to know what to make of it. Look closer it orders us, but what are we meant to see?

Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman) finds her perfect life upended by a missing pearl earring. Living with her doting optometrist husband, Fred (Matthew Macfayden), and precocious son, Harry (Jude Hill), in Holland, Michigan, Nancy is confounded by the loss of...

Gael García Bernal Almost Quit Acting Before Starring in ‘Y Tu Mamá También’
Image
Gael García Bernal attended the SXSW premiere of his latest project “Holland” on Sunday, March 9. Starring alongside Nicole Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen in “Fresh” director Mimi Cave’s sophomore feature, his character is the co-worker of Kidman’s and the duo uncover that everything is not quite as it seems.

Speaking with Bernal on the carpet, IndieWire asked the actor to reflect on his time working with Alfonso Cuarón on “Y tu mamá también,” which marks its 25th anniversary next year. “It was my second time working in films,” Bernal told IndieWire. “The first time, I didn’t really understand what happened. It was ‘Amores perros’ and it’s a kind of a film that you really don’t understand what happened, because it was so potent and it took the world by storm.”

‘Y tu mamá también’ was a different approach, because Alfonso included us in the process of...

Holland (SXSW) Review: This Nicole Kidman thriller falls flat
Image
Plot: A teacher (Nicole Kidman) in Holland, Michigan finds her picture-perfect life shattered when she discovers that her seemingly mild-mannered optometrist husband (Matthew Macfadyen) has a secret.

Review: Holland has to rank as my biggest disappointment of the movies I’ve seen this year at SXSW. I was a huge fan of director Mimi Cave’s last film, Fresh, which was a delicious (pun-intended) cannibalism thriller that, sadly, had the misfortune of coming out right in the middle of the pandemic, meaning it had a rather unceremonious release on Hulu. I was disappointed to learn that Amazon/ MGM would also be releasing her follow-up, Holland, on streaming rather than in theatres. Having seen the finished film, I can see why, with it the kind of embarrassing dud that, hopefully, gets buried so all involved can move on to better things.

I’m not sure what exactly went wrong with Holland,...

‘Holland’ Review: Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael Garcia Bernal in a Stylish Psychological Thriller That Doesn’t Pay Off
Image
Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman), the dewy-eyed protagonist of Mimi Cave’s sophomore feature Holland, has a tendency to somersault to conclusions. At the start of this stylish but plodding film, which premiered at SXSW ahead of its March 27 release on Prime Video, the suburban mother loses a pearl earring. Her husband Fred (a chilling Matthew Macfadyen) suggests she check her junk drawer or the jars housing her craft supplies. Nancy, convinced of her own theories, accuses her son’s tutor, Candy (Rachel Sennott), of theft and promptly fires the befuddled high-school student.

This is a clever introduction to Nancy because later, when she conscripts her friend Dave (Gael García Bernal) to help her investigate whether or not Fred is having an affair, you can’t help but wonder if Nancy might be jumping to conclusions again. Of course anyone familiar with Cave, whose directorial debut Fresh established her as a filmmaker to watch,...

‘Holland’ Review: Nicole Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen Are Terrific in Twisty, Overstuffed Thriller
Image
Though it can often feel like she is taken for granted, there are few performers working today who have demonstrated the vast range that Nicole Kidman has. She can be witheringly funny, devastatingly intense and is, most critically, always willing to throw herself into parts that can become tricky balancing acts between the two. In “Holland,” the latest twisty thriller from “Fresh” director Mimi Cave, this is put to the ultimate test.

Not only does Kidman have to flex all these muscles in playing a troubled woman who believes her husband is lying to her, but she must also weather what are some wild escalations that threaten to tear the entire film apart. That it doesn’t is a testament to her committed performance as, when paired with the always reliably engaging camerawork of “Fresh” cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, we get drawn into the rhythms of her world that is about...
