Even the crazy twists of this story that don’t quite work impressed me with their ambition in a film that gets incredibly dark and narratively insane.

The cramped environs and the paranoiac thrum that runs throughout the film like a main circuit cable straight to hell are almost outmatched by a third-act explosion of horrifyingly excellent practical gore effects.

We Need to Do Something mainly succeeds at suggesting a more compelling film beyond its bathroom walls.

Despite some nifty freak-outs, the movie’s buildup can lack a certain snap.

There are moments of dread and tension, and as the narrative wears on it goes to some commendably weird places. But by then it's too little too late, and the movie ends with us wishing that the characters really had done something — anything, really.

There’s something present here, something perhaps even brilliant, but whatever that may be; it’s just not enough.

The cast is wasted in such lame roles, and the horror story’s uncertain tone falls far short of intriguing. So, despite one supremely frightening moment, this movie is not scary. It just stinks.

We Need to Do Something simply doesn’t have the character-centered backbone to create an engaging 96-minute long story. It’s painfully obvious that atmosphere and style were the priority even though the premise made it so that the characters took the spotlight.

It’s never wholly fair to dismiss a movie just because it’s unpleasant to sit through. But that’s a good place to start with We Need to Do Something.

Unpredictability being its lone strength, We Need To Do Something is an uneven survival horror that gets caught up in its own pretentious trappings.
