Explores questions of consciousness interacting with high tech advancements, the film is also laced with a drastic dive into interpersonal/family/marital dynamics. A sort of meditation on the worst case scenarios, possibilities of the unknown territory of technological advancements and its interaction with human dynamics. The film maker seems to have couched various layers of meaning into the fibers of the film, and it does take a bit of interpretive finesse to see how the larger questions fit into the smaller choices of the film's elements. Some layers are more hidden than others, but on first glance may seem "basic". For example, the specific family holiday in question carries over many themes of birth/rebirth and redemption, which most viewers may not be cognizant of. It's an entertaining watch in any case and contains a lot of food for thought hidden in some very broad stroke silhouettes that paint out most of the film's progression. Thought provoking for those who might think twice about hidden meanings, and or engaging thriller for those who just want to dive into psychologically murky waters. The soil runs deep when the water isn't clean, a dose of reflection for those willing to look beyond the surface of the shallow pools of water, or silver, sometimes reflecting, or projecting, on the screen. 7 stars can surpass 8 or 9 stars for those who know their #s. And symbols. For those who know their references and allusions, a dive worth taking. Cosmic references of sorts, but even if you watch with blind eyes, you will probably still, enjoy your ride, ie probably still, enjoy, your view.
Good thriller, well made, really engaging, with rising tension and subtle danger felt in the air.
Characters really well formed, like real people.
Makes you feel like you know the family. Which of course will make you care for them more, or about what happens to them.
Also picks up some really sensitive and important topics, like the morality of genetic engineering.
All in all, it was really a movie that kept me wanting to watch; the picture quality and music and everything around was also very good.
ONLY: I didn't like the overall ending.
I don't want to include spoilers so I won't write why.
If you watch the movie, maybe you will agree with me.
