Don't do it!

Absolutely dreadful. It feels like something I'd make myself with a few friends and an iPhone. No real dialogue, very one dimensional characters, pretty basic plot, terrible action shots. It feels like everyone who likes it are trying/pretending to see something that isn't there. It's just really bad.

Wooden Acting. Horrible Direction

This movie is ridiculously bad. The acting is horrible. People saying line, after like, with no emotion, or any acting skills, and how about some regional accent from the supposed Mexican girl. She sounds like she was born, and raised in L. A. The direction is clunky, and action scenes are right out of Plan 9 From Outer Space. I realize it's an Indy, low-budget, but you gotta make a better effort with obvious things, like the fact that the actual blood isn't the color of red food dye, and gets darker as it dries. The story makes no sense. Why a drug cartel has $100,000 buried in a grave, with an AK-47 , and a cigar box that is forbidden to look in, is never explained, and wouldn't have made any sense if they tried to come up with something.

New Release Cartel Film

Mexican Moon is a brand new release cartel movie that just came out on Amazon. It's a moody flick that combines drama, action, and western genres. Visually, the film has a unique, almost stylized look and feel that likes to play in the shadows, almost reminding me a bit of a music video aesthetic at times, which is kinda cool. The plot has plenty going on between the cartel, our Vietnam-vet protagonist, and a whole bunch of cash on the line. The film is not without some minor imperfections, but they are ones that any independent film without a multi-million dollar budget would have. I personally enjoyed the film and would recommend it for someone looking for an indie with a modern western type of vibe.

Like watching a painting

I kept waiting for something to happen. Anything. Instead, there's just scene after scene with actors monotonally destroying their lines. About an hour in my brain, in an act of self-preservation, stopped the film.

Love those closeups

Interesting film escapes the coastal big cities to focus on our border towns with good results. Nice use of lingering closeups and original faces add to the experience and the genuine mood and reality of the region.

Just sit back and enjoy the vibe with some nachos

If you're into old-school westerns with a Mexican flavour then you're in for a treat! It has some great twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, introducing you to some great upcoming actors at the same time. It's not Tarantino, but it didn't have the Tarantino-budget either. That being said I feel like this movie outranks many in the same budget and I'm looking forward to seeing what else this director has in stock for us.

Amazing Night Film Style Cinematography

The evolution of the present day indie standard cinematic style could to well to remember the dramatic film style lighting present on Mexican Moon, reminiscent of some of the Japanese semiotic visual storytellers defining mastery.

Great Western Indie Film!

The vibe in this indie movie is very captivating, not sure if it was the music, the editing or the delivering of the lines but I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend!

An indie with big vision and heart

Mexican Moon is gem. It has an interesting premise and boasts beautiful location work, production design, cinematography and color grading. The musical score is awesome and drives home the Tex-Mex flavor. The shots are very artistic though at times I felt there were too many close-ups within a scene. Also, I felt the writing and acting could have used a bit of finessing but overall, as a lover of independent cinema, I rather enjoyed this movie.

A Uniquely Executed Western

Chris Zuhdi's "Mexican Moon" is an inventive, at times surreal, meditation on the cartel drug-war along the US-Mexican border, with bits of "El Mariachi" and "No Country For Old Men" running through its veins. Chock-full of terse Eastwood-esque dialogue and splatters of blood, "Moon" is an unique entry into the genre for the sheer execution of its storytelling. Zuhdi, acting as his own DP, shoots dialogue scenes in a slightly disorienting center-punch, never cutting away to a wide or two-shot, which gives the film an almost stage-like feeling. The lighting is hard, as if the omniscient God in this fictional universe was shining a spotlight down on every character in the scene. Dark blues and blood reds run throughout, but Zuhdi keeps you engaged, with the twists and turns of the hundred-thousand dollar mcguffin that constantly switches hands. Also, and I mean this sincerely, was blown away by the use of Johnny Cash's "Thanks A Lot", which I'm sure from a licensing point of view, could not have been easy to obtain! If you're tired of the ultra-slick Hollywood recreations of the old western, check out this down and dirty little gem today.

Very different

Visually, this movie is bold and very, very different. Filmmakers took risks here and I commend them for doing so. I enjoyed it.

Texas noir at its best

Thoughtfully made Texas noir crime film. Streamed on prime and glad I caught it. Felt like a new old film. Hope classic filmmaking like this makes a comes back!
