Pippa, is sincere and quite a success.

An immersive war film experience without the unnecessary chauvinistic nationalistic pomp and show-I enjoyed the film thoroughly. And yes! I wasn't really aware of the details of the war of '71, precisely the Battle of Garibpur, and how India helped East Pakistan (Bangladesh) attain liberation from West Pakistan.

The story of three siblings is straightforward and neat. The rift between the brothers was interesting. I am glad the makers didn't burden our protagonist with a love interest. The war scenes-WOW-beautifully designed. The locations where the film is shot contributed immensely. I believe not much of VFX has gone into the film. The tank battles could have been dealt with better. Underproduction? Small budget ? Maybe the reason, but whenever PIPPA was in the water, I was watching without a blink. Ishan worked for me as an actor mostly. Imaamulhaq was brilliant.

The visuals are for the theatre, and cinematographer Priya Seth did an excellent job, especially during the war sequences; the camera immersed me. Director Raja Krishna Menon did commendably as well-the setup, the war sequences were well done. I had teary eyes more than once.

On the flip side, the pacing gets slow towards the end. The climax is underwhelming indeed. Edits at some places were abrupt; also, the makers could have shortened the film. The background score was changing tones, so it worked for me only in parts. AR Rahman sir didn't impress. I wish the film had seen the theaters. Pippa Pippa, "Ghee da dibba," is a victory indeed.

Pippa is not a masterpiece but...

It was better than I expected. Honestly, the trailer did not do much for me and I was going to skip this one. I still gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised.

Now I'll be first to admit, I do not know a whole lot about the war of 71 except for few key things. Pippa and its role in war was unknown to me. I was glad that they didn't make this movie about a Tank although it's an important character just like the lamp is for Aladdin or the book is in Jumanji.

The good:

  • Ishan worked for me as an actor for the most part. He did have few misses here and there but for the most part it was great.

  • Imaamulhaq who played Shibli was the favorite part of the movie. That actor I have never seen before but won me over. He understood the assignment and had the time of his life on the set.

  • That one take, people who will watch will know. It was beautiful but it was prematurely cut.

  • I liked how the story was written. The screenplay was okay at best. The rift between the two brothers was good drama. The brotherhood in army. Mrunal Thakur's semi arc. Etc. It wasn't cringefest.

  • The background score and sound design was great too. Not as great as Uri. Uri had the best score and sound design of any Indian war movies but this one was good too.

  • The movie is shot very well. Some great Bangladeshi landscapes looked great on screen and a few scenes were extremely memorable.

The average:

  • All the battle sequences except one gun fight. The tank battles which are the essence of this movie were very underwhelming. They weren't as bad as Border or LOC Kargil. But come on. We have better technology and equipment to shoot a gripping tank battle don't we?

  • The final battle I don't know historically much about. But I doubt it was so small scale. And even if it was, it felt like I was watching some old 80s bollywood climax fight sequence. It was okay at best.

The bad:

  • Editing was the worst and the bane of this movie. Whoever edited this had no idea how to stitch two scenes properly. Some cuts and transitions were just jarring.

  • Songs were forgettable. None of them are worth visiting again. AR Rahman what are you doing?

  • VFX was below average. Given the small budget I get it but please use squibs for close ups at least or have real fire on tanks. That shouldn't be a problem I suppose. Or hire the guys behind Tumbad. That movie had small budget but did such great job.

  • The opening shot. I won't spoil it. But its supposed to be such an impactful, last nail in the coffin kind of event. But it was so poorly executed and acted that I almost turned off the movie.

  • Some of the supporting cast, such as the lady who played Indira Gandhi, did not work for me. Soni Razdan who I like usually like did not give her best. The deserter and the guy playing Pak army chief were terrible and took me out of the film.

Guys in the end, my low expectations did wonders. I didn't hate it as much as many others and I also did not think it's like a 5 or 1 star movie. It's an above average film that deserves a 7. Worse movies have better scores than this one has.

Pippa - India has all the stories to talk- but no good writer&director

The movie is americanised. The dialogues, accent, the lingo used by military personnel is all americanised. I am actually thinking, what american shows were they watching to learn such things or is these some American Training on how to hollywood style, also with guitar and drums playing in the background.

And then we have bollywood masala or songs and dance numbers.

If you are building a war movie, then build a war movie... why put all this bollywood magic masala and old formula. I was just waiting for some item number to pop up.

Instead, they could have dove deeper into the politics of it, the history of East Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mukti Bahini.

Remind how difficult war is

This movie deserved to be released in theatres. Every actor did their job perfectly. Cinematic experience was very good. Makers succeed in showing us the raw visuals. This movies is 10 times better than so called movies like Pathaan and Jawaan. This movie should have earned well. Ishaan impresses in his acting. Should have a special mention of Priyanshu Penyuli. He acted very well. Music is also very good. When there is AR Rahman, you cannot coplain. Mrunal Thakur felt little shaggy in her acting. She was not flawless. Actor who played Sam Manekshaw impressed in his short run. That's all. Overall its a must watch.

Expected more..........

The film is a sincere homage to India's generosity and humanity, as it shows how the country supported the oppressed people of East Pakistan and stood up for justice. The film also explores the bond between the siblings, who have different personalities and opinions, but share a common love for their nation. The film does not shy away from depicting the horrors of war, but also balances it with moments of humor and emotion.

The film's strength lies in its performances, especially by Ishaan Khatter, who delivers a convincing and charismatic portrayal of Captain Mehta. He shows his range as an actor, as he switches from being a carefree and impulsive youth to a mature and responsible leader. Priyanshu Painyuli and Mrunal Thakur also shine in their roles, as they bring depth and nuance to their characters. The supporting cast, including Soni Razdan, Inaamulhaq, and Leysan Karimova, also do a commendable job.

The film's weakness, however, is its uneven pacing and lack of clarity in some scenes. The film sometimes feels rushed and disjointed, as it jumps from one event to another without much explanation or transition. The film also suffers from some poor visual effects and editing, which take away from the realism and impact of the war scenes. The film could have benefited from a tighter script and a more coherent direction.

Overall, Pippa is a film that deserves to be watched for its honest and heartfelt tribute to India's war heroes and its message of peace and harmony. The film has its flaws, but it also has its moments of brilliance and inspiration. The film is a fitting celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1971 war and the birth of Bangladesh. I would rate it 6.3 out of 10 stars.

Veer Bhogya Vasundhara

Pippa, the movie revolves around the moment of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971,an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that occurred during the Bangladesh Liberation War in East Pakistan.

Ishaan's performance is looking quite impressive in this movie. His stubborn nature makes his character Balli more crystal clear towards his aim and duty for his country. Priyanshu is growing day by day by doing this type of work. His effort is glowing through his performance. Also Mrunal has done a sweet and effective role.

Overall Pippa is a good watch for all type of audience to know the value of our Indian Army who never give up to fight till their last drop of blood.

PIPPA:-A good attempt at the 1971 war

Pippa is an action drama historical war directed by raj menon.

The performances are good. Ishaan khattar, priyanshu painyuli, mrunal thakur are the three main leads and all three of them are diligent in their work. The rest of the cast is good.

One of the strongest qualities of the film is its cinematography and action sequences. The action sequences are very well choreographed and shot. They give a sense of high technical understanding of such scenes. The cinematography comprises many different landscapes. The camerawoman priya seth captures the war-torn lands of bangladesh in a very raw sense.

The screenplay is very engaging and tautly written. The events are very charismatic but not the characters. The characters are not well established to make us feel empathy. The film has a serious buildup problem. The buildup to the actuon scenes are not proper and hence you will feel distracted between the long drawn sequences. The music and sound design is pretty average, not something you resonate with AR rahman. 'Kara oi louho kopat' has been experimented very casually, very needless. I also don't like how the film tries to show bangladeshis as victims only and not fierce individuals and revolutionaries.

A Refreshingly Subtle Take on war !

"Pippa," stands out as a refreshingly understated entry in a genre typically known for its boisterous patriotism, especially within Bollywood. The film, anchored on the life story of Balram Singh Mehta, delves into the crucial role of the amphibious battle tank-aptly named 'Pippa' (a Punjabi word for a tin can that floats)-in the pivotal battles of 1971. Unlike many of its counterparts, "Pippa" eschews the usual jingoism, opting instead for a more nuanced approach to storytelling.

The narrative, admittedly slow to ignite, eventually finds its footing, drawing the audience into the thick of the action. Ishaan Khatter, portraying the main protagonist Balram Singh Mehta, delivers a remarkably measured performance, striking a balance between intensity and restraint. His portrayal underscores the character's evolution through the tribulations of war, a journey of maturation and transformation that is both compelling and convincing.

Supporting performances add depth to the narrative, with Mrunal Thakur and Soni Razdan offering strong turns as Mehta's sister and mother, respectively. Priyanshu Painyuli, initially rigid in his role as Balram's strict brother Ram, eventually finds his groove, contributing to the film's emotional depth.

Visually, "Pippa" impresses with some stunning tank sequences, showcasing a commendable level of technical prowess. The film's real auditory triumph, however, lies in its music and background score by the legendary A. R. Rahman, whose compositions elevate the film's mood and energy, keeping the "josh" (spirit) high.

A notable surprise is the performance of Kamal Sadanah, who steps into the shoes of the legendary Sam Manekshaw with a finesse that belies his time away from the spotlight. His portrayal adds a layer of authenticity and gravitas to the film.

However, "Pippa" is not without its imperfections. The script shows signs of looseness, particularly in the initial segments, and the VFX, crucial for a war movie, occasionally falls short of expectations, detracting from the film's overall impact.

In conclusion, while "Pippa" may have benefited from a grander release on the big screen, it remains a worthy watch. It tells a story that needed to be told, doing so with a subtlety and sensitivity that sets it apart from typical Bollywood war dramas. Its few flaws aside, "Pippa" is a commendable effort that contributes meaningfully to the Indian war film genre.

A Fantastic Cinematic Journey

This fantastic film, 'Pippa,' brilliantly weaves together history, heroism, and the human spirit. The title's nod to the PT-76, affectionately named 'Pippa' in Punjabi slang, cleverly mirrors the film's theme of resilience, much like an empty ghee tin gracefully floating on water. The coming-of-age story of Mehta and India unfolds against the backdrop of a war for liberation, culminating in a triumph that reshaped nations. The portrayal of the Battle of Garibpur is gripping, showcasing Mehta's leadership as India bravely infiltrated enemy territory for the first time, a pivotal moment that ultimately gave rise to Bangladesh. 'Pippa' is an awe-inspiring cinematic journey, celebrating courage and the transformative power of historical events.

Good movie but expectation was more.

First 30-40 minutes were totally disappointing. It was like any typical bollywoodiya crap, focusing only on lead actor and Personal stories instead of the 1971 war.

After then, it got the things right and movie came on track.

Pippa is based on 1971 India-Pakistan war, where you can watch Indian Tanks in action in East Pakistan to liberate Bangladesh. It can be made much better, but still appreciate the storyline and the effort.

It is a biographical war film based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of India's 45 Cavalry regiment who, along with his siblings, fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It is an adaptation of real life events during the Battle of Garibpur in 1971, and is directed by Raja Krishna Menon.

Worst Acting and dialogue

It's such a letdown to see a movie with a fantastic historical backdrop get ruined like this. Honestly, the acting was just painful to watch, especially the lead - they really missed the mark there. It felt like they were just reading lines off a script without any real emotion. A story this good deserved so much better. They really should've put more thought into who they cast for these roles.

This not only detracts from the film's immersive quality but also hinders the audience's ability to connect with the characters and their plight. The result is a film that feels like a squandered opportunity, failing to leverage its historical backdrop into a compelling and engaging cinematic experience.

The Film floats and doesnt sink!

I dont like the lead actor, but despite that I decided to see this film as it is about a topic which is close to me. The formation Bangladesh from East Pakistan.

Pippa is competently made, the acting is average. The main point is, the tanks are REAL! Having real tanks in the film is a huge step up from Tejas.

The VFX is mostly well done, some of the enemy tanks look a bit CGI but thats all right.

The film doesn't go into to much of detail about the whole war, stopping it from being an war Epic.

The first song in the film is atrocious and skippable, but there are no more songs after that thankfully.

Do watch the film, its not the best war film, but its a good coming of age war film.

Story good, dialogues could have been better

It was easy to watch, I was sceptical that it would be similar to other Bollywood movies, with more drama or scy-fi type action. But, I am surprised they have kept drama and action to as realistic as possible. I could not understand the hindi dialogues, maybe because of sound in the war, so had to use CC in the middle. I wish they also did something about brightness for night time war scenes, could not see it easily. I think the movie did justice to the story. Difficult to tell how much better you can do to a war movie, as war action scenes will become boring after a while, I feel they did their best in limiting action scenes to the necessary.

DIDN'T FEEL ANYTHING WATCHING THE MOVIE

I DIDN'T FEEL ANYTHING WATCHING THE MOVIE.

Don't know why after having a perfect cast, story,VFX and many other things director failed to showcase the tale of fighting for a independent country and the alliance of India and the enemy Pakistan.

The movie felt like the plot just needs to get forwarded just like that without building the story.

The actors immersed into the roles but the director failed and A. R Rahman also failed providing a patriotic score which would be the backbone of the movie.

Irrespective of having great VFX and war cinematography the war sequences felt too loose and felt like a theater play.

The director was great in creating the bond between the characters but couldn't create a huge impact.

If you want to know the history of Bangladesh you could watch it Otherwise just ignore it.

How ishan khattar gets roles??

I am amazed how frequently most of the crappy dudes and dudettes like khattar get roles. Khattar looks dodo, acts dodo raised to two, and has screen presence of dodo to infinity. He seems straight jacket nepo kid. Nepo kids have infiltrated bolly is well known. But how on earth and who funds these projects needs to be documented and why is even bigger question. Bolly is like any other business but only nepo kids getting screen time is mystery.

Journalism should work to unravel that. Pippa could hav been a great story full of fervor and amazing hooks but khattar and his deadpan looks, irritating screen presence ensure it landed a dud.

Much much better than expected

Crisp, concise, realistic, eye opening. It is unfortunate to see lower ratings for such an attempt and then blaming production houses for churning out non sense. Pacing, direction, practical effects to an unexpected level to keep the feel grounded and real, everything simply works. Should have been a theatrical release considering the effort went into making it but changed paradigm just doesn't allow "good content" to be profitable in theatres. In the sea of sub standard content, give some love to quality for a change. Good job and congratulations to the team. Now I am just trying to use up remaining 34 characters.

Sometimes not to fight is not an option...!!!

The story based on the book " The Burning Chaffees" by Brigadier Balram Mehta has been put forth as film Script brilliantly by Raja menon and his team...With Arr onboard what could be the best thing one can get...

Pippa is one of the brilliantly made films on wars that stand out due to its spontaneous events and not build ups.

It gives a view of a part of the 1971 Indo Pak war that liberated Bangladesh. It shows patriotism and valour in a beautiful way...

The cast has done a great job - especially Ishaan khattar shoulders the entire film. He has put out huge efforts starting from dancing to action sequences.( The starting dance number is excellent)...

While our Mozart of Madras brings out the soul of every martyrs with his brilliant composition and bgm are the core asset of the movie...

Overall the film brings out the morality of Bangladesh crisis stating that " Refuge is a faceless crowd" so give it a try you won't be disappointed...

Ishan khattar overacting destroy the core of movie

I think budget of the movie is limited to production of movie are very average.in writing movie lack the depth.u will feel that story is in hurry and leader role should be goven to priyanshu Painyuli rather than overacting ki dukaan Ishan khattar.whenever Priyanshu aka Ram Mehta come at screen he will let u feel that serious war movie is going on but when Ishaan khattar use to come on screen he literally destroyed the whole movie by his overacting. Mrinal thakur is okish in yhis movie bcz she don't have much to do, but whenever Ram Mehta and Soni Razdan come to screen then u will feel the movie n top notch acting.i think this movie is written in hurry without deep work, with less production cost at many places u willfeel like some kindy of fauji serial is running of the screen. They can do far far better than this.so i will give it 5 /10 ⭐

Bangladesh is born

This is a history awakening.. the atrocities west Pakistan was doing to East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh. How India could not stand the atrocity being doing there, was giving refuge to the Bangladeshis till we decided to fight the war with them. Our brave Indian Army. The film is based on the life of Captain Balram Singh Mehta of India's 45 Cavalry regiment who fought the war leading his team with PT-76 amphibious tank. And his siblings are also deep in the war. Priyanshu Painyuli as Balram's brother was amazing. Movie is directed by Raja Krishna Menon. Must watch for everyone to be aware of this history.

Not a story about tank

Poor story and direction. They say this story is based on tank or related to to tank but this story is about two brother. Actor just sometime talk about tank but show nothing about tank. Watch something else than it. The strategy they made in the movie is very poor. It looks like director is in hurry to complete the movie. In the they never show anything about tank just talk about it and show from outside. When go in war saw the opposition tank and just say fire and tank shoot other tank.. story is that simple. Story is even less than the minimum criteria of IMDb rating.........................

Another meh of a war story

There's Sam Maneksaw whose ribbons look like a result of a middle school art project.

The main character Balram has no sense of discipline or leadership or awareness that he is leading men into war. But this is par for Indian movie heroes who find themselves in the role out of entitlement rather than any ability to act or even understand the character.

The character of captain Balram is poorly developed and the acting is very sub par. The first 40 minutes could have been edited down to 5. On top of that, as is expected of Bollywood, there's the romancing a Russian interpreter and song and dance numbers in the midst of an attempt at enactment of a historical event.

The lack of discipline portrayed is splattered all over including when a new major comes to takeover. The snide comments coming out of lieutenants within earshot of a captain should be an offense in peace time. More so on a front during hostilities.

All in all - rubbish.

A family film with a brilliant story.

We all respect and honor the sacrifices that our armed forces make for the nation but what a soldier and his family experiences at a personal level is hard to put in words. The film tries to show us the story of a military family and the relationship that the protagonist, Capt. Balram Mehta has with his family. We get an insight into the personal and professional struggles of a young army officer who is intelligent but rebellious. Set in 1971, when Indo pak war took place, the film is a must watch. In spite of being a war film it can be seen with the entire family and cherished for its brilliant story.
