Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 4 is undoubtedly one of the most highly anticipated games of 2025. As the latest entry in the main Borderlands series, the game takes players to Kairos, a brand-new planet. Not much is known about its story, but in terms of gameplay, we know that Borderlands 4 is a massive upgrade over its predecessors.

Gearbox managed to keep most of the game’s content under wraps before officially revealing the game in August 2024. Over the past few months, players have received a lot of information about the game’s setting, Vault Hunters, and gameplay. Fans of the series strongly believe that the game will be able to repair the damage that the Borderlands movie caused to the franchise.

When Gearbox Software unveiled the first look at the highly anticipated Borderlands 4 at The Game Awards last month, fans were immediately struck by the sheer scale of its world. The latest entry in the beloved looter-shooter franchise looks more expansive and ambitious than anything we’ve seen from the series before.

But there’s one term that Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is deliberately avoiding when discussing the game’s sprawling environments. Despite what many might assume from the footage shown, he’s hesitant to slap the “open-world” label on Borderlands 4—and his reasoning might surprise you.

In fact, Pitchford’s careful choice of words raises some interesting questions about what we mean when we talk about open-world games, and whether that term might be doing more harm than good to player expectations.

What makes Borderlands 4 different from other “open-world” games...

Short films featuring the likes of Dua Lipa and Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones, Manhunt) reading extracts from the six books on the 2024 shortlist for the International Booker Prize for fiction translated into English will debut on Thursday, courtesy of Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s production company Merman.

The other performers are Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day, Poldark, The Outlaws), David Jonsson (Rye Lane, Industry), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher, Wanderlust), and Antonia Thomas (Still Up, Lovesick, The Good Doctor).

The shortlist films are directed by Charlotte Hamblin, a screenwriter, actor and director known for her performances in Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Operation Mincemeat. They will be published on the Booker Prizes website and social channels at 9 a.m. London time/1 a.m. LA time on Thursday. A trailer for the films was just posted on YouTube.

Agnieszka Holland is headed to the Vatican for a screening of her migrant crisis drama Green Border, following its selection for its 27th Tertio Millenio Film Festival in November.

The Polish director will also receive the festival’s Special Fuoricampo Prize in the Vatican Library on November 13, ahead of the screening in the presence of top Vatican representatives.

The news follows in the wake of a political backlash and online hate campaign against Holland and the film in Poland, where its depiction of the mistreatment of migrants on its border with Belarus has touched a raw nerve with the country’s right-wing government.

News of the Vatican honor went viral in the devoutly Roman Catholic country and provoked consternation on government-affiliated media outlets.
