HBO's "The Last of Us" managed to create a compelling video game adaptation by adhering to the dual strategy of staying true to the roots of the game while expanding upon aspects that warranted greater narrative depth. This approach has worked in the show's favor so far, as reflected in the overwhelmingly positive response towards episodes like "Long, Long Time" and "Endure and Survive," which fleshed out backstories for supporting characters in meaningful ways. A good adaptation always finds ways to improve upon its source material, and "The Last of Us" has succeeded in doing so thanks to the passionate involvement of series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who innately understand the heart of this tragic apocalyptic tale.

In The Last of Us season 1, Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie crossed the country to find the Fireflies, a rebel group that thought they could make a cure with Ellie's immunity. Joel and Ellie succeeded in their mission, but after Joel learned Ellie would have to die for a cure to be made, he went on a killing rampage through the hospital and left the city without telling Ellie the truth about what happened.

HBO's The Last of Us season 1 features cameos from many of the original game's actors, with some appearances more obvious than others. The Last of Us follows Joel Miller as he transports teenager Ellie Williams across the post-apocalyptic United States, trying to get her to the rebel Fireflies, so they can use her immunity to cure the cordyceps infection. The original game actors both voiced their characters and brought them to life via motion capture, although they don't all resemble the characters physically.

For HBO's The Last of Us, different actors were cast in most roles, partially due to different physical appearances as well as different ages. Joel was voiced by Troy Baker in the original Naughty Dog game, but is played by Pedro Pascal on screen. Ellie was voiced by Ashley Johnson, but given the Johnson is in her 30s, teenager Bella Ramsey was cast as Ellie for the show.

HBO’s latest hit series The Last of Us now officially has a soundtrack for its first season, a massive, 66-song compilation of all the music scoring the post-apocalyptic tale. Check it out below.

After working on the original The Last of Us video game, composer Gustavo Santaolalla returns for the HBO series, joined by fellow artist David Fleming. In an upcoming interview with Consequence, Santaolalla describes his approach to the soundtrack, saying, “The process of adapting, it was more in a way like craftwork than actually a new creation, because the themes were there, those things are there, like the characters, it wasn’t about creating a new job, it wasn’t about finding what is interesting. The Last of Us episode 5, “Endure and Survive,” introduces game characters and brothers Henry and Sam. Henry was a Fedra collaborator protecting the much-younger Sam after he becomes “the most wanted man in Kansas City” for selling out the brother of rebel leader Kathleen. The two characters are portrayed by Lamar Johnson and newcomer Keivonn Woodard.

Speaking on HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast, Druckmann and Mazin reveal how changes to Sam’s character from the game made the role particularly difficult to cast.

Mazin and Druckmann had written Sam as deaf, and ideally wanted to cast a deaf actor for The Last of Us' Sam role. This proved to be rather tricky, particularly because the part had other stipulations as well.

In a new conversation with The Last of Us Podcast, co-creator Craig Mazin reveals the death of one character was initially going to be much more gruesome than what appeared the screen.

HBO's "The Last of Us" is at times almost a shot-for-shot remake of the 2013 game from Naughty Dog, and at other times makes profound changes to characters and how their stories play out. Sadly, Sam (Keivonn Woodard) and his older brother Henry (Lamar Johnson) do not get a reprieve in the same way that Bill and Frank did. The fifth episode of the series, "Endure and Survive," brings their story to the same tragic conclusion as the game: Sam turns after being infected with the cordyceps virus; Henry shoots his little brother and, unable to live with the guilt and horror of what he's done, kills himself immediately afterwards.

But in a post-apocalyptic world with a generally high body count, the journey counts more than the destination. In that regard, "Endure and Survive" is effective in the parallels it draws...

HBO’s The Last of Us has aired its fifth episode and it was a brilliant ride as much of the season has been so far. Titled Endure and Survive, the episode aired a full two days ahead of its normal scheduled time, but that did not in any way dampen the viewing experience. HBO delivered a heart-wrenching tale of new-found friendships, love, and loss. Now HBO has released a trailer of what comes next.

Kathleen’s question is rhetorical, of course. By the time she finds Henry (Lamar Johnson) and confronts him, she’s made it abundantly clear how she would answer. But there’s hypocrisy in her accusation — a duplicity she can’t recognize through her rage.

Film festivals exist to showcase the future talent in filmmaking and the Gasparilla International Film Festival (Giff) had plenty of talent on hand.  The term filmmaking covers everyone from writers, directors, producers, to actors, actresses, and production folk.  All the filmmakers that one meets at a film festival are invited to be there.  They submitted their short and/or feature films and if selected by the board for screening at the festival, they are encouraged to be apart of the festivities.  Or in Giff's case, four days of films and panels followed by kick-ass parties.   

As I received the schedule and tried to attend as many of the events possible, I was able to meet a variety of filmmakers from all over.  Most of them were kind enough to share their film and entertain my random interrogatories.  Random, due to the lack of rest my mind received while covering the festival.

At the 2010 Gasparilla International Film Festival, one of the themes going through my mind was, "So many films, so little time."  Every night, the festival had at least one or two features that highlighted the night.  Screening before each feature length flick were shorts (films 20 minutes or less).  Many of those were produced right here in Tampa.  We'll get to those later this week.

Being a movie reviewer and apart of critic associations, all the new releases come my way.  What you may not know is that many of these wide releases one sees in the theater, started out in film festivals just like the ones being discussed here.  Instead of doing the usual formal review that my readers have become accustomed to.  We are giving these flicks the capsule review treatment.  Hopefully a formal review will happen if these flicks get picked up by studios for a wide distribution.

Everyone involved with the Gasparilla International Film Festival can pat themselves on the back, for this has been the best Giff to date.  Although everyone is having a blast and those who have attended were treated to many great shorts and feature flicks.  Many of us are waiting to finally get more than 2 hours of sleep.  Day 3 had so many wonderful activities going on which contributed to our lack of Zs.

Kicking off the day were a few educational panels at the University of Tampa.  One of them revolved around the future of Florida's film industry.  The goal is to get more projects to film and do post-production in our great state.  On the panel was State Rep. Between 60 and 70 films from all over the world are going to be screened at the Gasparilla International Film Festival.  The biggest Giff to date is going kick off on March 18th and run through the 21st.  Sure, that's a lot of movies to squeeze in, but thankfully, we have a list to help you make your choices.  Many of these flicks have chosen the Giff to make their world premiere.  This year will once again have both feature length flicks and shorts (under 20 minutes) on display in one of three theaters (CineBistro, Tampa Theatre, Muvico Ybor).  For a complete listing, go here.  Check out the related links articles to the left for scheduling info and tickets.

This film traces the lives of journalists who have covered some of the most dramatic stores of our time.

Tampa, Fl - A press conference was held today at the CineBistro in Hyde Park, by the hard-working people behind the Gasparilla International Film Festival.  The fourth annual Giff will run from March 18th through March 21st.  During that timeframe, over 70 films from are expected to be screened at the CineBistro, the Muvico theater in Centro Ybor, and the Tampa Theatre.  Digital Domain Holdings will be presenting this years event.

Overseeing this constantly growing event is 2010 Giff president Chad Moore.  During the press conference, Chad stated that everyone involved with Giff is looking to a lay a foundation for the coming years. 

"This year is about the long-term goals.  We are taking actions to set things in place to continually grow the Giff."

Also with Chad on the panel sat Ken Hagan, Chair of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners.  He also shared this view on the Giff.
