Turned out to be a bland experience...

Stumbling upon this 2024 thriller titled "Dead Sea" by random chance, and never having heard about it, I opted to give the movie a chance. I have to admit that the movie's synopsis actually sounded interesting enough.

However, having just sat through the entire 88 minutes that the movie ran for, I was left with an overwhelming sensation of 'was that really it?' when the movie came to an end. The movie starts out quite nicely, with writer and director Phil Volken pushing the movie's momentum forward pretty early on. But there was just something fundamentally important missing from the movie's narrative, and it sort of became bland and irrelevant towards the last quarter of the movie.

The movie has a very small cast ensemble, but leading actress Isabel Gravitt did carry the movie well enough with her performance. I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie. The acting performances by the cast were good.

There was a little bit of violence in the movie, but nothing noteworthy. "Dead Sea" was not a movie that relied heavily on special effects, and whatever effects were in the movie were actually fair.

"Dead Sea" is by no means a movie that I will return to watch a second time. Nor is it a movie that I will openly recommend people to rush out and get to watch.

My rating of writer and director Phil Volken's 2024 movie lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

A Time Waster That Feels Like A Waste Of Time

Jays and Tessa (played by Isabel Gravitt and Genneya Walton) decide to go on an ocean trip from Florida to the Bahamas (and so, crossing into international waters and then an entirely different country) on a couple of jet skis with a couple of guys they barely know. That's not very smart - so, while of course you don't want to fall into a "blame the victim"" mentality, it's OK to think of the writers: "This is the best you could come up with?" Things don't go well, of course. The boys end up dead and the girls fall into the clutches of some very evil people after a horrific collision between the two jet skis.

There's lots of pointless filler in this - surprising since its run time is only 1:27, but true. But the basic problem here is that it's a "Suspense" movie that lacks much in the way of suspense. It's a time waster that feels like a waste of time. Gravitt and Walton are OK, but no better than that. The movie is dry; It fails to engage on any level.

It feels like a story that's been told a thousand times before, with each time just needing a bit of retweaking. It isn't awful. It just isn't necessary. (4/10)

You have seen all the parts of this movie before.

It begins like half a dozen movies. Then it ends like half a million other movies. I will call it "Spitting on your Open Water Grave".

There are dumb kids doing irresponsible things that get them into trouble. Yeah, there is an early twist. Doesn't make the movie's new direction any better though. It just goes from one irritating sub-genre to another. Then it's mostly creepy and drawn-out.

The one okay thing about the whole affair is that Dean Cameron, who so eloquently played Chainsaw in the 80's classic Summer School, has found work - albeit in a role that they clearly offered to Kim Bodnia but had to settle on a lookalike for instead.

You are not missing much if you fast-forward through this or skip it altogether. The one boat's name was Haleh.

Worth hanging in to the end

One of those films that starts off looking a bit like some cheesy coastal teenage love story, but seems that the movie crew really got into this story as the movie goes on and the tension builds. I love coming across a movie that looks like nothing but ends up with me cheering at the TV 😁

The first 20 minutes or so, although seeming a little tacky, was obviously done on purpose to intensify the story beyond. After a (maybe little far fetched) accident at sea, the tension really builds and continues to do so.

There are quite a few points where I just thought, "no way, that's..." and then I'm sucked back in, it's a real grower, worth a watch 🙌

Meh

Kinda boring tbh. Felt like a mashup of other movies into one movie. Gives a amateur feeling in some scens. The main villain of the movie was good , he is a veteran when comes to playing this kinda roles. Skipped alot after the midway of the movie , felt helpless to not to skip. Honestly haven't watched full movie was either on my phone scrolling or skipping the movie scene by scene. Not worth the time skip this and watch something else . Wont miss anything if you skip this movie nothing new or special about it. Actually bored writing the review for this movie . Hopefully this review helps maybe.

Terrible

The movie idea is great.

I could honestly focus on how terrible this film is, definitely has tons issues!

The music is put in all the wrong places, & in some spots it's just unnecessary to have anything in the background, the audio level is inconsistent & too loud causing us to scramble looking for the remote. The story is dragged out. The acting is cringe... add to that the green screen used for the ocean scenes is very much noticeable. I'm not sure how this movie has been given 10 stars, it's a definite flop to say the least. To close this off I'd say just watch the trailer it's a whole lot better than the actual movie and tells the story quicker.

A fun thrilling suspense. Perfect to watch on a lazy Saturday

Simple and to the point. It had the right amount of gore, suspense and cheesiness.. Cudos to the editing department for not bogging us down with long boring back stories...just the right amount. Story of Friendships, survival and woman empowerment. Loved all the non verbal communication throughout the film. You were able to understand the characters without really knowing the characters and for that I really appreciate. I really hope one day this movie will be made into a sequel... I would love to find out how the story unfolds..and maybe then the back story of all these characters. Short story due for a movie.

A well-told thriller that never deviates from its objective.

This compact thriller was written and directed by Phil Volken and I confess that watching his work was a positive surprise. Logically, one cannot expect deep philosophical musings or deep personal dramas from this film. It is assembled around a daring and risky youth adventure, but at the same time, it is irresistibly attractive to the adventurous spirit of these two couples. A trip across the open sea on powerful jet skis to a deserted island near the coast with a beautiful beach to spend a day of leisure, sun and budding romance.

But on the return trip an unfortunate accident occurs. The machines collide with each other and one of the young people dies instantly. The other Xander (Koa Tom) is seriously injured and requires medical attention. The two young women Kaya (Isabel Gravitt) and Tessa (Genneya Walton) struggle to stay afloat and assist their friend in a sea infested with sharks. Then, a miracle happens, a fishing boat appears with only one crew member on board, Rey (Alexander Wraith) and proceeds to rescue the castaways.

I won't spoil what happens on board this rickety and sinister ship. But here's what I liked about this film. Clear narrative, realistic natural images of the sea and its dangers and a desperate fight for survival that is more credible than in other stories of this genre. The cast was very well chosen and the two young girls showed promise, particularly due to the role she had in the outcome, the work of Isabel Gravitt was highlighted.

Lost and found

No pun intended - death is only the beginning could be a subtitle of the movie too by the way. But weird stuff aside, this starts off quite nicely ... and then sort of devolves and falls short later on. The lost at sea routine is one thing ... the cliches that come up when the inciting incident happens ... well I don't know what to say and call them, but they do not help or improve the movie.

I reckon this is not for sensitive people - then again the title might suggest that too. Acting is alright if you consider this being a low budget horror thriller - with some social commentary I guess ... but that is not the main point. It is about the female main characters and their ... struggle ... dare I say trying to swim out of a crazy situation ... is that a pun? Well it is for this movie.

Good for the gender

If you can "ignore" the begin of this movie and parts of the end, the movie is pretty good actually. ENJOY

The begin is super teenager dumb, classic two friends when one of them is in a bad time of his life and the another one give a bracelet friendship bla bla bla

But they will do a adventure together and everything will change.....

And I will tell you almost everything here about this beginning part for you who are reading don't give up when u are watching if you really like this kind of survival movie...

When the action and the tension starts, the movie change for a really good movie to the gender.

Everything change: the acting turns in to a better one, looks like almost the directing or photography change.

And for the and, well let's say: the movie could be 5 minutos less.

A Tense Maritime Thriller with Familiar Currents

Directed by Phil Volken, Dead Sea is a 2024 American crime-horror film that immerses viewers in a suspenseful tale set on the open ocean. The story follows Kaya (Isabel Gravitt) and her friends Tessa (Genneya Walton) and Xander, whose jet ski adventure turns tragic after a fatal accident. Stranded at sea, they are rescued by a seemingly benevolent fishing vessel captain, only to discover that their savior harbors a chilling secret.

Positive Aspects: I. Atmospheric Setting: The film effectively utilizes its maritime setting to build tension and a sense of isolation, contributing to the overall suspense.

II. Lead Performance: Isabel Gravitt delivers a compelling performance as Kaya, capturing the character's vulnerability and resilience in the face of mounting terror.

Negative Aspects: I. Predictable Plot: Critics have noted that the narrative follows familiar tropes of the genre, with plot twists that can be seen coming.

II. Character Development: Some reviews point out that supporting characters lack depth, making it challenging for audiences to form strong connections with them.

Final Verdict:

Dead Sea offers a suspenseful maritime horror experience with a strong lead performance and a tense atmosphere. However, its reliance on genre conventions and underdeveloped supporting characters may leave some viewers desiring a more original and emotionally engaging story. Fans of ocean-bound thrillers might find it a worthwhile watch, but those seeking innovative storytelling may find it lacking.

The "preview" alone of Dead Sea is already a dead giveaway

(2024) Dead Sea SUSPENSE THRILLER

Co-produced, written and directed by Phil Volken that has Kaya Adams (Isabel Gravitt) and her boyfriend agree to go jet skiing with Tessa Miles (Genneya Walton) and her boyfriend. They then get into a serious accident, and are then taken under the wing by the skipper, Rey (Alex Wraith) of his own fishing vessel "Candi B". Both Tessa and Kaya are then held against their will below deck, keeping them for the intention of having their organs sold in the black market.

All that I had just described can be shown on the "Dead Sea" preview with the help of the fast forward button to the last 30 minutes. And because there is a happy ending it deserves a pass.

What a waste of time...

If its posssible to give a movie 0 stars out of ten i would have, one star is too much. Straight off the bat, the opening scene was far to cringe, should have turned it off then but gave it the benefit of the doubt... never doing that again.

The most thrilling part was seeing the shark but he didnt get nearly enough screen time. I did enjoy the green screens of the ocean that were very obviously fake.

The filming was so bad i thought they were swimming in a lake. I wouldnt wish anoyone to waste their time watching this. Looked like a film you would make with friends on imovie.

Watch the trailer and leave it at that.

There are lots of things missing from this film, the music was timed so terribly, but the CGI stars looked as good as the underwater green screens... Honestly the new Snow White live action would have been more entertaining.

Hope this help...

Much deeper film!

If you're into horror and gore, keep looking. But if you want a gripping film about humanity's dark side and the will to survive, you're in for a ride! It's tense, suspenseful, and hits close to home with its realistic take on what goes on in the world. The young cast is fantastic, and the direction is spot-on.

While the film starts off as a fairly typical young adult thriller, it soon takes a dark and realistic turn, plunging the audience into a harrowing ordeal that feels all too relevant in today's world of greed, cruelty, and inhumanity. The film is full of heart. It's a great little find of a movie!

Splasher horror

I understand the need for light and shade but the first 20 minutes of Dead Sea was so sickly sweet, I almost turned it off. However, stay on course and bloody action is lurking just around the corner.

When the first kill arrives, it hits you like a wet trout across the face and that's when things really change tack.

Although mostly set on a boat, there's some ingenious ways the action moves around, creating a somehow agoraphobic and claustrophobic setting all at once.

If you can suspend your disbelief, the premise and novel location make for a fun stalky slasher with some satisfying kills and suspenseful moments. Fans of nautical nightmare classics like Dead Calm (1989) and Triangle (2009) should jump on board Dead Sea.

"Dead Sea": A Tense Descent into Maritime Terror Fueled by a Resilient Lead

The vast, cerulean expanse of the open ocean, initially promising sun-drenched adventure for Kaya (Isabel Gravitt) and her friends, soon morphs into a terrifying stage for survival in "Dead Sea." The film masterfully utilizes its maritime setting to cultivate a pervasive atmosphere of dread and isolation. Sweeping aerial shots of their small jet skis against the seemingly endless horizon emphasize their vulnerability, a feeling amplified by the unsettling silence punctuated only by the roar of the engines and the distant cries of seabirds. This initial tranquility is shattered by the fatal accident, the sudden shift in tone underscored by jarring sound design and a frantic, handheld camera style that throws the viewer into the chaos.

The claustrophobic confines of the rescuing fishing trawler then become the primary setting for the film's suspense. The creaking hull, the dim, flickering lights, and the ever-present rocking of the boat create a sense of unease long before the sinister intentions of Captain Rey and Doctor Hunt are revealed. The plot unfolds with a deliberate build-up of tension. The initial relief of rescue slowly curdles into suspicion as Xander's condition worsens and the behavior of the crew becomes increasingly unsettling. The reveal of the organ trafficking operation is a gut punch, shifting the film from a survival narrative into a desperate escape thriller. Kaya's frantic flight through the narrow corridors of the boat and the ensuing cat-and-mouse chase with Rey are expertly paced, maximizing suspense in the confined space.

Isabel Gravitt's portrayal of Kaya is a standout, anchoring the film's emotional core. In the initial moments of panic after the accident, her wide, tear-filled eyes and trembling voice vividly convey her fear and desperation. As the situation escalates, Gravitt subtly shifts Kaya's demeanor, her initial vulnerability hardening into a steely resolve. A particularly impactful scene shows Kaya's silent determination as she tends to Tessa's injuries, her focused gaze and tight jaw communicating a fierce protectiveness. Even in moments of extreme duress, such as her desperate escape from Hunt, Gravitt imbues Kaya with a raw physicality and unwavering will to survive.

The slow-burning dread is palpable throughout the first half of the film. The idyllic jet ski trip is subtly undercut by a sense of foreboding, perhaps in the vast emptiness of the ocean itself. The unsettlingly calm demeanor of Captain Rey initially masks his true nature, creating a sense of unease that gradually intensifies. This slow build allows the audience to invest in the characters' initial plight before the true horror of their situation is unveiled. The moments of brutality, such as the implied harvesting of Xander's organs and Kaya's violent confrontation with Hunt, are stark and impactful, serving to underscore the ruthlessness of the antagonists and the high stakes of Kaya's survival.

"Dead Sea" grapples with themes of the fragility of life, the darkness that can lurk beneath a veneer of normalcy, and the indomitable nature of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. Kaya's journey is a testament to resilience, her will to survive fueled by the desire to protect herself and her friend. In the context of maritime horror, the film shares similarities with the isolated and perilous scenarios of "Open Water," but introduces the added dimension of human predation, reminiscent of the tense cat-and-mouse dynamics of "Dead Calm," albeit within a more confined setting.

Ultimately, "Dead Sea" offers a gripping and unsettling cinematic experience. It leverages its atmospheric maritime setting, a suspenseful plot filled with shocking twists, and a compelling lead performance to deliver a recommendable thriller that lingers long after the credits roll.

Dead Sea: A Dull Dive into Predictability and Missed Horror

Dead Sea offers a visually intriguing setup and some decent atmosphere... but the movie ultimately falls short due to its predictable plot, weak final girl, and underwhelming villain.

The story feels like a checklist of horror tropes... predictable and lacking in fresh ideas. The final girl makes you want to scream at the screen for her sheer stupidity... her decisions are baffling, and the performance does little to redeem it. The dialogue feels like filler, failing to carry any emotional weight.

As for the villain, they're about as scary as a damp towel... there's no real menace, and the character feels more like a prop than an actual threat. The most terrifying thing about the movie is the ocean itself... if you're afraid of it, you might get a shiver from that... but the actual scares are nowhere to be found.

Still, Dead Sea does have an eerie atmosphere that keeps it watchable for a quick horror fix... it won't stay with you, but if you're just looking for some ambient dread without expecting anything deep, it does the job.
