Rupert Friend is heading into the Berlinale a little anxious.

The British actor, a veteran of the industry with major roles in Homeland, Pride & Prejudice and, most recently, Drew Hancock’s buzzy thriller Companion, was only a “whip of a thing” when Chéri premiered in competition at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival.

“I was 25 and it was probably my first big lead role,” the now-43-year-old tells The Hollywood Reporter. “From the first 20 seconds, you just felt the audience… lean back. The movie finished and it was the sound of one, slow clap. I just died.”

After this “bombing” of Stephen Frears’ Colette adaptation, Friend was a little wary of the spotlight. It impacted him for a long time after, he confesses, even though he landed the part of a key character in the wildly successful Showtime series Homeland shortly after.

Andras Hamori, the Hungarian film and television producer whose credits included Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter, István Szabó’s Sunshine and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, has died. He was 71.

Hamori died Sept. 2 in Budapest after a long illness that prevented him from working in recent years, his friend Mia Taylor announced.

Hamori, who worked out of Toronto early in his career and was a partner in Alliance Entertainment, also guided the cult horror classic The Gate (1987), starring Stephen Dorff in his first major role; Stephen Frears’ Chéri (2009), starring Michelle Pfeiffer; and the 2014 History Channel miniseries Houdini, starring Adrien Brody.

The Sweet Hereafter (1997), which earned Egoyan Oscar nominations for best director and adapted screenplay, revolved around a school bus accident in a Canadian town that killed 14 children.

Theaters across the UK were bathed in blue light Thursday evening, in tribute to the late impresario Bill Kenwright.

Following the death of Kenwright, one of the country’s leading theater producers and mentor to hundreds in the industry, theaters in his home city of Liverpool lit up in blue to pay tribute to his other great love, Everton Football Club, where he served as chairman for over two decades.

The BBC reported that theaters paid tribute in other cities across the UK, including Darlington, London, Blackpool, Brighton and Sheffield.

Kenwright’s death at the age of 78 was announced on Tuesday. Everton Football Club shared the news on X, stating that he had “passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones.” “The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration,” the statement added.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.

In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.

“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”

Everton Football Club, at which Kenwright was Chairman for two decades, shared the news on X, stating that he had “passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones.” “The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration,” the statement added.

Another statement from Kenwright’s Bill Kenwright Limited said it was “devastated to share the news,” describing him as a “beloved partner, father, grandfather and friend.”

“Bill was driven by his passions and devoted his life to them: his deep love of theatre, film, music, and his beloved Everton and the families they created,” added the statement. “He impacted the lives of thousands, whether that be through launching the careers or his unending loyalty, generosity and unfaltering friendship and support.”

Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz will portray legendary Old Hollywood director Billy Wilder in a biographical film from director Stephen Frears, the film’s producer Jeremy Thomas announced Monday.

“Billy Wilder and Me” is part coming-of-age-story and part true-life portrait about a young woman who begins working with Wilder during the filming of “Fedora” on a Greek island in 1977. But as she continues with him to Germany to continue the shoot, she finds herself joining him on a journey into the memory of his family history. The Austrian-Hungarian born Wilder is the director of such masterpieces as “Sunset Blvd.,” “The Apartment,” “Some Like It Hot,” “Double Indemnity” and many more.

Christopher Hampton, who is collaborating with Frears for the third time after working together on “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Cheri,” wrote the script based on the novel “Mr. Wilder and Me” from author Jonathan Coe.

The No Time to Die and Inglorious Basterds star will play Wilder in the part coming-of-age story, part true-to-life portrait of the Hollywood icon, which is adapted from a book by Jonathan Coe. Exclusive: West to star opposite Knightley in biopic of iconic French writer.

The Wire And The Affair star Dominic West will appear opposite Keira Knightley in upcoming drama Colette, based on the life of the French author who wrote Gigi and Cheri.

In the film, the novelist and influential society figure overcomes an abusive marriage to emerge as a leading figure in her country and a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

West will play Colette’s first husband Henry Gauthier-Villars, a well-known author and publisher.

Fourteen years older than his wife and one of the most notorious libertines in Paris, he introduced Colette into avant-garde intellectual and artistic circles while engaging in sexual affairs and encouraging her own lesbian dalliances.

Wash Westmoreland will direct the biopic, based on a script he co-write with the late Richard Glatzer, who both co-wrote and co-directed Still Alice.

One of the many perks of living in Los Angeles is one's ability to run into actors, filmmakers and other random celebrities at any time. While I get to talk to actors and filmmakers regularly as part of my job, it's always pleasant when you run into someone in public, who is just genuinely nice and cool. In January, while waiting in a concessions line at a movie theater, I realized I was standing in front of Toby Kebbell. British director’s latest film, Florence Foster Jenkins, to screen at the festival’s open air theatre.

Stephen Frears, the British director of The Queen and Philomena, is to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award at the 22nd Sarajevo Film Festival (Aug 12-20).

Frears, who was previously the subject of the festival’s tribute programme in 2002, will have his latest film - Florence Foster Jenkins starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant - screened as part of Sarajevo’s Open Air programme.

Previous recipients of the honorary award have included Angelina Jolie, Gael Garcia Bernal, Mike Leigh and last year Benicio del Toro.

Frears breakthrough as a feature film director came with the low budget hit My Beautiful Laundrette in 1985 and made his Hollywood debut with Dangerous Liaisons in 1989, which received six Oscar nominations.

Exclusive: Teams behind Carol and Still Alice partner on period-biopic due to shoot in May.

Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game) is in advanced talks to star in biopic Colette, written by Still Alice team Wash Westmoreland and the late Richard Glatzer.

Westmoreland is set to direct the feature from Carol producers Number 9 Films and Killer Films.

Nightcrawler and Whiplash backers Bold Films will finance and co-produce the English-language title, marking the company’s first foray into the UK. Filming is due to commence in May in Budapest.

HanWay Films, which is on a roll following Oscar-nominations for Brooklyn, Carol and Anomalisa, will handle world sales. Additional casting is underway.

Pam Koffler and Christine Vachon (Carol, Still Alice) produce for Killer Films and Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley (Carol, Made in Dagenham) will produce for Number 9, which is currently in post-production on Juan Carlos Medina’s The Limehouse Golem and Lone Scherfig’s Their Finest Hour And A Half.

Exclusive: Staff addition forms part of production push for London outfit.

Burn Burn Burn producer Daniel-Konrad Cooper has joined Bill Kenwright Films as an in-house producer as part of the company’s drive to move film and TV projects into production later this year.

The company, owned by Everton Football Club chairman and West End theatre producer Bill Kenwright, has previously worked on titles including Broken and Cheri.

Cooper, whose production credits include Chanya Button’s Burn Burn Burn - currently in post-production – and Edinburgh 2015 title Narcopolis, joins Naomi George, head of film & TV, and Steve Potts, who oversees all operations and productions for the Bkl group.

Director of The Queen, Philomena and the upcoming Lance Armstrong biopic to receive honour at BFI London Film Festival.

British director Stephen Frears is to receive a BFI Fellowship on Oct 18, ahead of the close of the 58th BFI London Film Festival.

The BFI Fellowship is awarded to individuals in recognition of their outstanding contribution to film or television and is the highest honour bestowed by the organisation.

BFI chairman Greg Dyke described Frears as one of the UK’s most important directors.

“Throughout his extraordinary career, Stephen has produced a body of work which never fails to surprise – from sweeping costume drama to powerful social realism, his films strike a perfect balance between drama, humour and pathos helping to make them a hit with audiences and critics alike,” added Dyke.

Homeland star Rupert Friend is in negotiations to replace the late Paul Walker in 20th Century Fox's Hitman reboot Agent 47.

Paul Walker had been attached to the project since February, and he had planned to shoot the project after he wrapped production on Fast & Furious 7. The actor tragically passed away in late November from injuries sustained in a car crash.

Aleksander Bach is making his feature directorial debut, working from a script by Michael Finch and Skip Woods, who wrote the 2007 video game adaptation Hitman, which made $100 million worldwide and starred Timothy Olyphant. No story details have been released, although the original movie and the video game follow an assassin known only as Agent 47, who has a barcode tattooed to the back of his head. The Square Enix video game series has sold more than 20 million units since the franchise was launched.

When the title of a new theater work includes an accent aigu, and the advertising highlights the fact that the story has been adapted from Colette, perhaps it’s unnecessary to underline any further the Frenchiness of the proceedings. But Martha Clarke’s Chéri goes for the whole Camembert. Naturally, the Paris flat where the drama is set has French doors and casement windows; also a breakfast table dressed with croissants, coffee, strawberries, a pomegranate, and a neatly folded copy of Le Monde. We get it. And in case we somehow don’t, Tina Howe (who provided the brief, mortifying text) imprints every other sentence with a “quelle horreur” or a “ça suffit,” like Louis Vuitton logos on a valise.An empty valise at that. Or perhaps I mean emptied. Chéri (1920) and Fin de Chéri (1926), the two Colette novels on which this production is based, are not classics for nothing.

No, no. Not the top ten actual grosses from last weekend but ten things worth noting.

1. Any article about this weekend's movies that does not mention Short Term 12 is just a giant waste of time. Expanding into 30+ more cities, this awesome indie climbed the box office charts escalating its gross to a healthy ½ million to date. Congratulations to writer/director Destin Cretton and Brie Larson (interviewed right here at Tfe) and everyone involved with this wonderful movie. But most of all let's thank Cinedigm and their publicity team for really getting behind this one. Securing distribution is only half the battle. Once you've got a distributor, you had better hope someone really believes in your movie. And several someones did. 

2. Insidious Chapter 2 opened at #1 with a huge $40.2 million, making it Patrick Wilson's second smash hit horror movie of the year. He's found his niche, however different that niche...

If the real Philomena Lee is anything like the character written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope and portrayed by Judi Dench in Stephen Frears' Philomena it instantly makes the world a better place. Her very nature makes this film as uplifting, moving, funny and heartfelt as it is. Based on the 2009 book written by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, Philomena traces the story of an aging Irish woman as she's aided by Sixsmith to track down the son she had to give up 50 years earlier when she was only a teenager at the convent in Roscrea, County Tipperary. The search follows a path you won't soon expect and as each page of the story is written you find yourself increasingly invested in what they find. Coogan stars as Martin, bringing his particular dry sense of humor and wit to a character that may in fact be over-matched by Judi Dench in the title role.

He's been behind some greatness over the years ("The Grifters," "High Fidelity"), but since his award-winning success with "The Queen" in 2006, Stephen Frears has had a rotten run—no one's been particularly keen on "Cheri," "Tamara Drewe" or "Lay The Favorite," while HBO movie "Muhammed Ali's Greatest Fight" won few over at Cannes. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.

The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.

Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.

"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. That’s 100 more than last year, and part of an easing of a longstanding cap on the number of new members allowed to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences each year.

AMPAS usually adds between 130 and 180 new members, replacing those who have quit or passed away. The membership now stands around 6,000.

Jason Bateman, Jennifer Lopez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emmanuelle Riva, and Chris Tucker are among the actors who have been invited to join, the organization announced today.

Stephen Frears’ name was once an unmistakable hallmark of cinematic quality, but these days, he’s not exactly someone you’d bet your chips on. After a brief slump in the late 1990s, he bounced back with the sublime, Best Picture-nominated The Queen, but has failed to find firm footing since, turning out a triple-header of underwhelming works – Cheri, Tamara Drewe, and now, Lay the Favourite.

For those not acquainted with American gambling laws – that it is illegal in anywhere other than the state of Nevada – an odd feeling might emerge during the opening scenes of Fears’ latest offering.
