The Soho Horror Film Festival’s virtual sibling Sohome Horror Pride returns this weekend with a defiant and dazzling showcase of queer horror from around the globe. Running from 13 to 15 June, the 2025 edition marks the sixth outing of the award-winning LGBTQ+ genre event, and delivers a line-up of 10 feature films and 25 shorts – all available on a pay-what-you-can basis, making it one of the most accessible genre festivals of its kind.
The programme takes full advantage of the weekend’s Friday the 13th date, presenting a theme strand titled Queering the Slasher, a celebration and subversion of the tropes that have long shaped the horror genre. Among the headline titles is Black Theta, Tim Connolly’s self-aware homage to early-2000s slashers, making its European premiere. The festival also features the international debut of The Brooklyn Butcher, a sleazy, neon-lit portmanteau that Cinephobia Releasing described as “Abel Ferrara meets Paris, Je...

For a horror anthology, Hauntology seems like the perfect title. I’m surprised that nobody actually thought of it before. Director Parker Brennon’s queer horror is much more than its title, of course. It does have issues when it comes to technicalities, but the good intent is visible, which makes the whole thing very much watchable. It sets up an interesting premise for all four segments and then neatly ties all of them together by the end. In this article, we’re going to look into the ending of Hauntology and also each of its segments, separately.

Parker Brennon’s Hauntology (2024) is an anthology of ghost stories revolving around a neighbourhood in Ohio. The stories of diverse subgenres of horror– from witchcraft to rural horror then to a giallo and finally ending in Gothic Victorian– feature one central predilection– the question of the place of the queer. The narrative and its elements try to mirror the isolating experience of being a queer individual in a sprawling American locality. The loose threads of each story are finally tied in the final showdown and endowed with an ending of certainty.
Hauntology (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Catching up with runaway sister Venus (Jaidyn Triplett), Jazmin Price (Samantha Russell) agrees to take her sibling far away from her troublesome situation at home if she feels the same way after she’s been given a tour of her hometown and the spooky stories involving their ancestors. It’s anthology time, folks, which always piques my interest, and this one focuses on both LGBTQ+ society and people of colour so I was looking forward to writer director Parker Brennon bringing their unique and vibrant perspective to the portmanteau pic.
I’m disappointed, and incredibly frustrated, that Hauntology does not only miss the chance to truly freshen up the subgenre but also lacks some comprehension of those magic elements which make the format sparkle. The template is there: framing device; four different tales spanning the years (plus a bonus mission for the sisters at the very end); a sprinkling of...
