What a sweet yet melancholic movie, some shots are a bit weirdly cut, but the overall great. The soundtrack are in sync with the storyline and the acting is really good.

I loved the closed shots in this piece.

Billie and her younger brother Nico grow up in a dysfunctional family. Their mother is desperately clinging to a man who is an abusive drunk.

The filmmaking style is naturalistic and experimental. There is a mixture of black and white and color filming. Both are very beautiful but I'm not sure of each's significance. There are some really powerful moments. I would like the abuse to come sooner and to have more time for their adventure. I prefer a longer road trip for the kids and more story. The movie does have its slow spots. I want less of those and more well-constructed stories.

A film that feels almost a physical object in its beautiful, rough-edged handmade craftsmanship, splicing together colour and black and white footage, complete with wipes, veering from blurry hand-held closeups to wide shots with an almost relentless dynamism that miraculously never loses narrative clarity.

There's not much else like it, except possibly some artist's film, but maybe it sits somewhere between the minimalism of early Jarmusch (who is thanked in the credits) and the inventive lushness of Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The latter, being Schnabel, is just a little overcooked. Rockwell, like the third bear in Goldilocks, gets it pretty much just right.

The story is equally perfect - a sort of neo-Dickensian odyssey of waifish strays in desperate search of a safe berth in the ever-unpredictable homes of adults who can be everything from monstrous abusers to fonts of loving kindness.

Absolutely everyone in it plays their parts superbly and the soundtrack is the best mix tape ever.

How is it that a great and touching work of art like this has zero chance of getting Oscar recognition while deeply flawed efforts by better known directors make the roster? It ain't right, damnit.

I watched this movie last year around april via tribeca (online). the movie has still stuck with me. beautiful performances and such a beautiful story! even though there are some dark undertones, it's done beautifully and i definitely resonated with them. and the visuals are so captivating. i can't wait till i can see it again. great movie. and side note... these three negative reviews (all written on the same day with the same negative rating..) are so unnecessarily mean.. awful that people would be so set on bullying a small independent film that is so full of life.

Like his previous film with the same two actors "Little Feet," Sweet Thing is a complex and involving ode to transcending a childhood's worth of anguish.

Great film in the vain of "our gang" Great for kid and their parents. A wonderful adventure.

Visually beautiful, thought provoking and ultimately priceless! Performances were so raw. Nico is so charming!!

DVD lacked subtitles for the elderly, disabled, hearing impaired, and ESL viewers, and even the run-of-the-mill English speakers. Disrespectful & cheap on the part of the producers especially when audio & enunciation is poor; out of sync voicing & mouth movement; black & white grainy video. Seemed like the dated hand held camera approach.

Story of an alcoholic father sorta watching over his two young teen children who spend time on the streets stealing or vandalizing.

Another top shelf picture by Alexandre Rockwell, the director of In The Soup and Little Feet. As with the latter, Rockwell is able to capture a world from a child's perspective that is both entertaining and original.

Poetic childhood adventure that I really really liked

In these uncertain times, Sweet Thing is a bittersweet ode to childhood, and the difficult learning of growing up. In its vagabond and surrealist poetry, Sweet Thing reminded me of Forbidden Games, of that secret language children have and that we, adults, have forgotten. Alex has not forgotten it, and it is a wonder to watch.

I was fortunate to be a part of this film, but I didn't realize until the screening what a beautiful, moving story it is. Can't wait for it to be distributed so others can appreciate this gem.

From American indie stalwart Alexander Rockwell (In The Soup), comes this beautifully crafted personal gem. Not only is it's story, which is told from child protagonists' POV, deeply poetic but the film also feels hand crafted partially due to it being shot on film. Cinematically it feels genuine as its time and textures sucks you into a world of kids and their problems at hand. It is surprisingly engaging and gripping with performances so natural that you end up almost feeling part of its world. Which is what you want a movie to do.

I watched this in the Berlin Film Festival 2020: tender, poetic, and brutal in equal measure, Rockwell's film is filled with poetry that speaks to a child's resilience in hard times. The film is aesthetically and tonally unique, shot in black and white that recall classical films of yore with bursts of color that reflect the joy and creative sprit of childhood. This is independent film at its finest and in its truest expression -- shot with a tiny crew, the film's rough hewed nature and free-spritedness is only possible without the oversight of the Hollywood machine. Films of this nature are a rare beast in this increasingly commercialized environment. Truly one of a kind gem -- my highest recommendation.

This is an amazing work of art.

A beautiful meditation on an impoverished childhood. With verve and vitality it pays a dreamy-eyed retrospective debt to films past, and largely due to the beguiling performance from Rockwell's own daughter Lana, ultimately delivers a moving, tousled journey of discovery - but it's through an America that has not existed for decades, if it ever did.

I was one of the lucky ones who got to see the film at the Berlin Film Festival and it was a wonderful surprise. I went with a friend who had scored the ticket and I figured 'what the heck' I might as well tag along. I am so glad I did because I was blown away as was the whole audience. I had never seen a Black and White film in a theater and is was stunningly beautiful. The children in the film dog through such a hard time but the film somehow angers to be funny and full of hope. I want the sound track that mixes modern classical, old school Rock n' Roll and jazz. Just wonderful, I only wish it had not ended.

Tender, honest and rich in imagination, Sweet Thing is a moving journey of discovery. It features gorgeous performances that make you laugh and break your heart.

An astonishing example of how little means you actually need to create something extraordinary; 2 charismatic kids, a few actors of infectious talent, and a deft and empathic writer/director. They've crafted a transcendent film out of a few thousand dollars and a lot of soul.

I knew In the Soup from Alexandre Rockwell, which I loved! I was so deeply moved by Sweet Thing: the kids (especially future star Lana & her beautiful voice!), the b&w image, the retro feel of the whole film... I recommend it highly!!

A wonderful, poetic cinematic journey. Amazing, honest performances and beautiful black and white cinematography. Not to be missed.

Rockwell is at the peak of his filmmaking prowess with SWEET THING. Beautiful, moving story that's obviously very personal, and in so doing, becomes all the more universal. Particularly for our era of anxiety and social distancing, the film takes us on a journey that most people won't be able to go on any time soon. Whether you're a fan of Rockwell's prior work, or new to him through this film, you'll be impressed.

A bittersweet story about growing up with an incredibly talented cast + crew, this film is a must-see for indie film lovers.

Another great film from vastly under appreciated Alexandre Rockwell. Again and again he proves what a powerhouse of a filmmaker he is and Sweet Thing is no different. Original, classy, funny, smart with incredible performances across the board. The world is a better place with films like these. I hope Rockwell continues to make films and, surely one day, will get the accolades he deserves.

Filled with heartwarming characters and events, Sweet Thing is a black-and-white nostalgic beauty that every cinema lovers should see at least once in their lifetime.
