Fei Legend, Flat Lemonade?

When I read the news about the making of Legend of Fei I felt like a child waiting for its X-mas present to unbox. Just imagine! Our present darlings of c-drama put together, the product teams of Princess Agents and Boss & Me, BTS with carefully orchestrated choreographies, a story based on a Priest novel, how good is that! Once served, this exciting cocktail seems to be a flat lemonade, and I know, tastes differ. That's why I'm trying to explain my reasons in this review.

Story

Legend of Fei (2020) is based on the novel Bandits by Priest. The main characters are Zhou Fei (Zanilia Zhao) the granddaughter of a national hero turned into a bandit for the greater good, and young carefree martial arts hero Xie Yun (Wang Yibo) They find themselves confronted with trouble and decide to work together. During their many adventures they discover some secrets and the true identity of Xie Yun.

When adepting a novel to the screen it is necessary to cut some parts and leave out the rest. Unfortunately, this choice wasn't well made. Comedy, romance, action, drama, all of it went back and forth, on and off, slowing the pacing of the story to the very closure. Much greater stress should be laid on the story of the main characters, but this didn't happen. The mains were side tracked by unnecessary minor stories. In her social media account, Zanilia Zhao likens this production to a Big Mac that turned out to be a flat hamburger. All I know is this is a mature Priest novel, but all we get to see is a narrative for children.

Actors

Zanilia Zhao (Zhou Fei) is still a shining star, Legend of Fei included, although it seems her heart isn't really into this. Male lead Wang Yibo does his very best, eager to confirm his actor skills after his rise to fame as Lan Wangji in The Untamed (2019). Unfortunately, WYB has to cope with two major set backs. One, he seems a boy still wet behind his ears besides 10 year older Zanilia Zhao. Two, his character Xie Yun is reminiscent of the dashing, flippant character of Wei Ying (Sean Xiao), his love interest in The Untamed, making the longing for better-written characters even worse.

Production

Sometimes, a lesser story can be neutralized by the quality of the production. Alas, Legend of Fei is very uneven, just like its pacing.

Verdict

It isn't all that bad really. Sometimes there are some episodes with beautiful landscapes, choreographies, close-ups, romantic gestures, but the feeling evaporates due to dubbing, childlike dialogues, cheap looking attributes and so forth. So, I don't think this series will become my favorite. If you're a die-hard fan, however, you can't miss Legend of Fei, and perhaps this will be the only purpose of the series. Its reason of being.

good in looking but average story telling and acting

Great looking Wang Yibo in the drama. But The story line is really boring. The acting performace of both the laeds is not convincing. I do not even watch full drama. Still I give 6 stars becoz I have to salute the effort of the whole team they put on their work.

Perfect oldschool wuxia drama

A very honest adaptation of Priest's novel that gives you the vibes of classic old wuxia. I like the strong female lead, drama also gifted us with powerful supporting female characters. The love relationship between the protagonists is adorable and non-toxic. The male lead is a breath of fresh air with his lack of toxic masculinity. I like this drama for the balance between comedy and angst, romance and fights

Classic Wuxia with strong female protagonist

Watch it for the strong female characters, fantastic chemistry between the leads , sparkling romance and a good plot. It has a strong start though it takes time to settle before the world building is complete. A must watch for whump lovers

Stellar chemistry between the leads

This show has a nice pace, not too much stalling and the storytelling is smooth. The thing I enjoy the most in this though is the chemistry between the two leads. No typical clinche bickering or unnecessary dramatic pining between them. Very enjoyable.

How lucky am I? That in these troubled times, amongst thousands of people, I met you.

Legend of Fei emerges as a captivating Chinese drama that seamlessly blends elements of adventure, romance, and martial arts, delivering a rich tapestry of storytelling that captivates audiences from start to finish. With a stellar cast, breathtaking cinematography, and a narrative that weaves together intrigue and emotion, this series stands as a testament to the heights that Chinese historical dramas can achieve.

At the heart of this drama is the charismatic pairing of Zhao Liying as Zhou Fei and Wang Yibo as Xie Yun. Their on-screen chemistry is nothing short of electric, elevating the romantic subplot to a central pillar of the series. Zhao Liying's portrayal of Zhou Fei is a masterclass in character depth and nuance. Her journey from a spirited, free-spirited young woman to a formidable martial artist is both compelling and empowering, showcasing the strength that lies within vulnerability.

Wang Yibo, in the role of Xie Yun, brings a brooding intensity that complements Zhou Fei's spirited nature. The intricate dance of emotions between the two characters adds layers of complexity to the narrative, making their evolving relationship a highlight of the series. The palpable on-screen chemistry between Zhao Liying and Wang Yibo is a testament to the casting director's keen eye and the actors' commitment to their roles.

Visually, it is a feast for the eyes. The elaborate set designs, vibrant costumes, and breathtaking landscapes transport the audience to a vivid world of martial arts and ancient Chinese culture. The attention to detail in recreating historical settings is commendable, immersing viewers in a visually stunning experience that enhances the overall storytelling.

The martial arts choreography in the series is a spectacle in itself. From intricate hand-to-hand combat to gravity-defying stunts, the action sequences are executed with precision and flair. The fight scenes are not merely displays of physical prowess but integral components of the character development and plot progression. Each duel serves a purpose beyond the visual spectacle, contributing to the overall narrative arc.

It is well-paced and has a tightly woven plot. The narrative unfolds with a perfect balance of suspense, romance, and character development. The series successfully navigates the challenges of adapting a popular novel into a visual medium, maintaining a cohesive and engaging storyline that keeps viewers invested in the fates of the characters.

In addition to its entertainment value, it also explores themes of loyalty, friendship, and self-discovery. The characters undergo significant growth throughout the series, grappling with moral dilemmas and personal conflicts that add depth to their individual journeys. The storytelling transcends the confines of a typical martial arts drama, offering a nuanced exploration of human relationships and the pursuit of one's true self.

The supporting cast deserves accolades for their contributions to the series. Each actor brings a unique energy to their respective roles, contributing to the overall ensemble dynamic. The camaraderie among the characters enhances the sense of a tightly-knit community, adding emotional weight to the trials and tribulations they face together.

The drama is a triumph in the realm of Chinese historical dramas. With its compelling characters, visually stunning production, and a narrative that seamlessly blends action and romance, the series establishes itself as a must-watch for enthusiasts of the genre. Zhao Liying and Wang Yibo's magnetic performances, coupled with the series' meticulous attention to detail, makes it a standout entry in the ever-expanding landscape of Chinese drama. As it gracefully dances between martial arts prowess and heartfelt emotions, the series leaves an indelible mark, inviting viewers into a world where adventure and love converge in a mesmerizing tale of resilience and self-discovery.

Slow and a little bit boring.

You Fei (aka Legend Of Fei) is the second worst one I've ever watched in 2021. I only watched this one because of Wang Yibo. When I was watching, there were many times that I wanted to stop watching. But I continued watching it because of Wang Yibo. Plus, I wanted to know about that so-called Hai Tian Yi Se. And also, this is why I continued watching episode 2 after episode 1.

This TV series is so slow and it seemed that the plot is unnecessarily stretching. And the things in this TV series are not that much interesting. Of course, except for that so-called Hai Tian Yi Se. I felt boring to continue. But I continued because of Wang Yibo and that Hai Tian Yi Se. After episode 39, I couldn't watch the whole episode. So, I used skipping unnecessary scenes and only watch some scenes. In the end, the result wasn't that good. Hai Tian Yi Se that I was expecting wasn't that much satisfied. So, conclusion is that it wasn't a good TV series.

I don't know about the original novel as I haven't read it. But, the live action is slow and a little bit boring. My thought is that if only you're a fan of Wang Yibo, you should watch it.

Utter disappointment

I am just shaking my head at the 10 star reviews here for this drama. There are so many Chinese fantasy dramas that are way better than this. I am not sure what happened during the production of this series. The main actress Zhao Li Ying seems to not be too much invested in her role. Worse, the fight scenes are boring and awkwardly staged unlike say Sword Dynasty. There is no romance so to speak of, unlike Bloody Romance that achieved much more with a smaller budget. The story is a bore, unlike say The Rise of Phoenixes and there is no interest in the characters here, unlike say Ever Night. Series like this one, and the ridiculous 10 star reviews, are doing a disservice to the other many good Chinese productions that strive to find a wider public in the West.

If you like Chinese fantasy drama, this is for you!

Playful, exiting and well written. These are only a few words you can use to describe The Legend of Fei. The chemistry between the two leads fells honest and real. With a powerful male villan a strong and stubborn heroine, and a pure hearted hero. This story will take you in an existing adventure!

I like martial arts!

I enjoyed watching martial arts movies and series. This drama contains a lot of martial arts action scenes. People said it's a bit different from the original book, but I didn't read the original book, to me this show is perfect for if you just want to enjoy a story on the side with no hard brain work.

Great adaption from novel

The two main leads Zhou Fei and Xie Yun are such loveable characters, beautifully brought to life thanks to the commendable performance by Zhao Li Ying and Wang Yibo. The side characters are also memorable and I feel for them. Pacing of the show was a bit slow in the first few episodes, but it soon picked up and the plot has been exciting and is progressing well.

Love the music, having a nice OST is an added bonus. I'm now at the 20th episode, totally addicted and can't wait for new episodes to be released! Packed with action, relationships and bitter sweet romance, do give it a try if you enjoy shows relating to fantasy and Chinese pugilistic world.

A delightful watch

Determined and headstrong girl A'Fei fight patriarchal notions and seeks to achieve greatness come what may - Liying is powerful and makes you root for her instantly Breezy and dreamy Xie Yun with layers of sorrow and bigger understanding of the world - can't take your eyes off of Wang Yibo not just because of looks but to not miss the subtle expressions swimming across his face.

Look deeper

Many people had issues with the genre. However, if you look past what you wish and see the story with the two strong characters it flows nicely and is quite pleasant. I found myself stucked into Wang YiBo's portrayal of Xie Yun. He has grown on his art and carried the short comings of the rest by the believable character.
