If you Google the name Belle Gunness, you will understand the gist of it. She was born Brynhild Paulsdatter Størsetjare. She emigrated from Norway to the United States in 1881 and changed her name to Belle Gunness, probably to get a more American-sounding name for herself and get as rich as humanly possible without doing any real work. This fails terribly and she sets alterative plans in motion. From what's known in history, she killed her first husband in the year 1900. But will it stop there? The movie doesn't need any form of exaggeration or adding to the story. It's already as gruesome as it can possibly be.—vsveig

THE FARM is a psychological thriller based on the real life exploits of Belle Gunness, American's most prolific female serial killer. The twice widowed, Norwegian immigrant mother of four children, lived on a picturesque farm in La Porte, Indiana.

The local community perceived Belle Gunness as a private, respected member who had fallen on the hardship of being unlucky with love. While in fact, Belle lived a secretive lifestyle driven by an insatiable drive for power and money.

Belle placed enticing "Lonely Hearts Ads" in several Norwegian newspapers to lure unsuspecting suitors to her peaceful farm in Indiana. Her cleverly composed ads were filled with promises of love and matrimony. One by one, the men would arrive carrying all their dreams and worldly possessions. One by one, they would vanish completely unnoticed by the local authorities. Flashbacks of Belle's abusive childhood and the fear of being exposed, triggers a paranoia that begins to consume her. Belle's calculated macabre lifestyle begins to tailspin in the early spring of 1908.

Ray Lamphere, Belle's handyman, part-time lover and partner in crime can no longer be trusted. His excessive drinking and conversations with a local prostitute, Stella, is unacceptable. Ray had broken Belle's sacred "Rule of Silence" and for that there would be consequences.

Belle's anxiety is compounded when she discovers that her 18 year old foster daughter, Jenny Olsen, is having a love affair with a local produce peddler, Angelo. The love and support of Angelo gives Jenny the strength and nerve to be defiant. The two lovers secretly plan to run away and get married. Belle Gunness has other plans.

On April 28, 1908, a raging inferno left the Gunness farmhouse in ashes. A routine search of the remains by the local authorities led to a series of horrific discoveries and the creation of a haunting mystery that remains unsolved to this day.

FOOTNOTE: THE FARM is based on actual conversations the screenwriter had with his grandfather in the late 1950's. His grandfather, an Italian immigrant, was a produce peddler and Belle Gunness was one of his customers. His name was ANGELO.
