Excellent film, with a fine and subtle humor, very funny, a tribute to the town.
It is like an elongated short film. The only redeemable are some performances. It was like watching the guy's life from the Simpsons fair.
This is by far the worst movie i have seen. Great cast gets wasted by a very poor direction. A simple plot that could have been greatly taken advantage of is thrased.
The starting shots felt a bit too long for me, almost as the ones you may watch at Film School in peers' excercises, in need for editing, but: eventually I thought it must be the Director's choice to portray an 80's, down paced feeling, years before cellphones/social media madness. And the film soon finds its tempo and style with Jesús Ochoa's superb scene. The script is well crafted, the acting team is memorable, and the northern accent is nothing but sweet. After so many film/tv show trips of "MEXICO IS A NARCO STATE", this sort of prequel comes more handy, if you're trying to understand the phenomenon, as a small society is taken over by greed. This being Yazpik's 1st Directing job, I'm sure great films will follow.
It ended and I thought: "what now??"
The main character's issue is simple: he's got a problem, he solves it and he leaves the scene, period. Additionally, instead of getting into more trouble he just runs away. Never mind that he has left behind the woman he loves and a child he had with her. He's got big dreams, but he's just too simple a guy to follow them. So, he gives it all up for his peace of mind. And yeah, that's it. And because he's like that the story becomes that way too.
The conflicts are all outside, never in his mind, in his heart. He never really colides with himself, struggles with his conscience, debates with his demons. That flattens the story. A character that surrenders to his contradictions is a weak character. There's no problem in protraying a loser. But make it an interesting loser, not a lukewarm one.
I understand the intention of the director/writer/producer, but the argument is just wasted. It had a lot more potential.
