Argentina’s Guillermo Francella and writer-directors Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat, star and creators of Disney+/Star+ smash hit “El Encargado” (Hulu’s “The Boss”), are re-teaming on “Homo Argentum,” an around 10-episode movie anthology, skewering the frustrations, paranoia and bloodymindedness seething below the surface of modern-day life.

Netflix has struck an overall deal with the Colombian producers behind The Hijacking of Flight 601 (Secuestro del Vuelo 601), which launches on the streamer today.

Camilo Prince and Pablo González, the writers, directors and showrunners of Flight 601, have signed an agreement to produce further shows and films out of Colombia.

They are known for Netflix shows such as Colombian-Mexican true-crime drama Colmenares (Crime Diaries) and bank robbery series El Robo del Siglo (The Great Heist), and will now work even closer with the streamer.

The Hijacking of Flight 601 launches today on Netflix. The drama is based on the the 1973 hijacking of Sam Colombia Flight Hk-1274 by two Paraguayan soccer players who held the plane and its 84 passengers for a ransom.

Cecilia Mato and Lucas Vivo García Lagos, founder of Navajo Films Argentina and Intro Pictures Brazil, have joined forces to launch Navajo Films Uruguay.

“We interpret the idea of ‘bringing a fresh perspective to the industry’ as infusing new ideas, creativity and a unique approach into our work. Despite being two young individuals, we bring a wealth of experience to the table. Our goal is to produce IP that resonates with us as viewers,” said Mato, previously at Salado.

Film Factory Entertainment has picked up international sales rights to Cristian Bernard’s thriller movie “Ecos de un crimen” (“Echoes”), successfully released in Argentina by Warner Bros Pictures and HBO Max.

Barcelona-based Film Factory, which previously handled hit Latin American titles such as “Wild Tales,” “La Llorona” and “The Clan,” will introduce “Echoes” to international buyers at next week’s Cannes Film Market.

After a Jan. 27 theatrical release, “Echoes” sold more than 105,000 tickets, becoming the biggest local hit at the Argentine box office since March 2020, the beginning of Covid-19 quarantine.

“Echoes” is produced by Particular Crowd, the original content label of WarnerMedia Latin America, alongside Buenos Aires-based Tieless Media, the production company founded by Fernando Abadi.

Spanish distributors, who have enjoyed a strong track record selling remake rights to local pics, have received a major boost this year with the Malaga Festival Industry Zone’s (Mafiz) inaugural Remake Day event on Thursday.

Leading film sales companies, among them Cinema Republic, Latido Films, Filmax and Feel Content, presented showcases of films considered particularly adaptable to foreign markets. Not surprisingly, comedies and genre pics made up most of the selections.

David Castellanos’ Cinema Republic offered one strong example with Borja Cobeaga’s hit 2009 romantic comedy “Pagafantas,” which has over the years sold to Germany, Italy and Mexico.

Netflix released a first look photo (above) of Sofia Vergara as real-life drug queenpin Griselda Blanco from the upcoming limited series, Griselda. The streamer also revealed 10 newly added cast members including Vanessa Ferlito and Juliana Aidén Martinez.

The six-episode series chronicles the life of Colombian-born Blanco, who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. A devoted mother, Blanco’s lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the “Black Widow”.

Colombian director Andrés Beltran has been busy the last few years helming major series for Netflix and local broadcaster Caracol – “Undercover Law,” “Bolivar” and “Wild District” – all the while developing his sophomore horror feature “Tarumama.”

Having put in his time directing other people’s writing, Beltran was able to shoot his long-gestated project and plans were made for a 2020 premiere. But, as was the case for so many filmmakers this year, plans were put on hold as Covid-19 shutdown cinemas and slowed or froze filming. Post-production was put on hold and eventually the film’s premiere pushed back.

Now, although there is still some post-production left to do, Beltran is finally premiering his film, a works in progress cut anyway, at Ventana Sur’s Blood Window. Cine Colombia, who boarded during development, will distribute domestically next year.

Madrid — Adding to a powerful and still growing talent roster, Viacom International Studios (Vis) has clinched a first-look deal with Argentine writer-director Ariel Winograd whose latest movie, “The Heist of the Century,” has just become one of the biggest Argentine openers in history.

The multi-year pact takes in the development and production of not only feature films – where Winograd has had a large impact- but also drama series.

With Winograd, Viacom International Studios has landed one of Argentina’s most popular auteurs who melds romantic comedy or heist movies (“Wine to Steal”) with contemporary social commentary, whether on Jewish communities in Argentina (“Cheese Face: ‘My First Ghetto’”), women’s choosing not to have children or open relationships.
