Originally the show was hosted by Angus Deayton. In 2009, he was replaced by Rob Brydon after being censured by the BBC for making an inappropriate joke about Jimmy Savile and his mother.
In later seasons, the rounds featuring film and/or video extracts and the stills with "celebrity" truth or lies were eventually dropped so the series could focus exclusively on the truth or lies of the seven studio participants; host Rob would rarely be telling a truth or lie, although he would always participate in banter between team captains David, Lee, and the other 4 team members that would change every week. The unseen and best of compilations were always compiled from the current season. Additionally, the shows YouTube channel would feature movie-length compilations, such as David's and Lee's rants, as well as the more traditional clips of each round.
From series 3 onwards, as at early 2021, Rob Brydon continues to be the host.
In June 2025, while filming the upcoming Christmas special, guest David Walliams twice made a Nazi salute on the show, which the show's production company and the BBC both described as "completely unacceptable", adding that the segment would not be broadcast.
