Star of British film thrillers who specialised in the role of the classy girlfriend

In the 1950s, while watching a second feature before the "big picture" at their local cinema, regular British filmgoers would often have seen Rona Anderson, who has died aged 86. Anderson starred in 20 movies between 1950 and 1958, mostly well-crafted, low-budget thrillers. Opposite such luminaries as Robert Beatty, Jimmy Hanley, John Bentley, Paul Carpenter and Lee Patterson, Anderson was the classy girlfriend who helps the hero solve a murder, usually via a visit to the criminal underground, all within the hour allotted to the film.

According to the Scottish comedian Stanley Baxter, Anderson "had this incredible, porcelain-like face, too beautiful for film … The camera likes angularity, to see the edges, and I think Rona's face was just too perfect." Whatever the reason, Anderson made few major movies, though she appeared in many popular television series, such as The Human Jungle...

Nicolas Winding Refn follows up his Los Angeles pulp thriller Drive with an ultraviolent far eastern crime oddity

Like his mentor, the 57-year-old enfant terrible Lars von Trier, the 42-year-old Nicolas Winding Refn is equally fascinated by extreme violence and the austere, mystical Lutheranism of Carl Dreyer, the father figure of Danish cinema and still its greatest exponent. His new film as writer-director, Only God Forgives, exhibits both these elements but is set far from Denmark in a stylised, present-day Bangkok, almost entirely at night in underpopulated, garishly neon-lit streets and dark interiors, though there's one memorable, downbeat shot of the oppressive, smog-ridden city in the early morning.

A new trailer has been released for the latest take on the classic story of "Romeo & Juliet."

Adapted by "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes, "Romeo & Juliet" stars Douglas Booth ("From Time to Time") and Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") as the ill-fated lovers.

The trailer borrows classic Shakespeare lines, beginning, "Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo." Romeo and Juliet are shown falling in love as Juliet's cousin Tybalt (played by Ed Westwick of "Gossip Girl" fame) warns the young woman against being with a man from the Montague family, the rivals of her own family, the Capulets. "Given the challenges this country faces, the casual observer could be forgiven for thinking that cultural activity is at a low ebb. That, however, is not the case. From Karachi to Peshawar to Swat, cultural activities are drawing audiences," said an editorial in the Dawn.

Securing an interview with The Great Gatsby star Leonardo DiCaprio required un-Luhrmann-like levels of attention

The 66th Cannes film festival opens with The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann's star-spangled adaptation of the nightclub in Southsea. Luhrmann's opus has the swimming pools and fireworks. It's got a thousand extras, 40 Prada party dresses, 288,000 crystals and an exclusive VIP area containing the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. Philip French's international reputation as a film critic is unrivalled. As recently as February, after a career with the Observer that began in 1963, an American film journal rated him as Britain's "greatest living movie analyst". But at the end of August he is to file his last column as this newspaper's film critic. Pro wrestling has been an almost constant in my life. In fact, if you perused the Schibler family photo album you would find photos of my mom and dad when I was a small child attending a local Texas wrestling show, featuring the likes of Percy Pringle III, the master of Destrucicity the Ultimate Warrior, and the Von Erichs. So from a young age, I have watched, studied, and reenacted professional wrestling matches, be it with my brother or with various other inanimate objects and dolls around the house. The Schibler household was home to many a tag team classic between The Brothers Schibler and My Buddy Doll Collective.

An advert on Friday on the directgov website – used for government recruitment – seeking a "target elimination specialist" might have let slip the answer: £50,000-£60,000, with "performance bonuses on completion of missions". Whether that involves trips to casinos, or money for the restoration of Scottish ruins, isn't specified.

To Manchester where I am to have a walk-on part in a new TV version of my first novel, A Very British Coup, about the overthrow of a radical, very left-wing prime minister. Once in awhile, as a reviewer, I come across some strange little gems. They won’t win major prizes. The may not even be distributed worldwide. In the end, they may not even be celebrated. But they exist. Trust me. A good example would be this little movie right here: “Chonmage Purin”. A quirky family oriented comedy about a time-travelling samurai who inadvertently lands in front of a present-day Tokyo supermarket.

Washington, Mass. — Folk singer Arlo Guthrie has announced the death of his wife, Jackie, at age 68.

Jackie Guthrie had inoperable cancer and died Sunday at the couple's winter home in Sebastian, Fla., according to an obituary released by Arlo Guthrie's record label. The couple had recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.

In a Facebook posting, Guthrie says his relationship with his wife was "a very great love."

"We didn't always like each other," he wrote. "From time to time there were moments when we'd have our bags packed by the door. But, there was this great love that we shared from the moment we met – a recognition – It's You! And we would always return to it year after year, decade after decade and I believe life after lifetime."

From time to time, we like to try something a little different here at HeyUGuys, and having spent more time than I’m sure I’d like to admit on sites like Sporcle, who have an excellent variety of user-made quizzes on movies and much, much more, I thought I’d give it a shot myself and see if I could successfully design my own film-related crossword.

Being a gamer is a double edged sword. But how often is that, really?

Yet still, you play on, you beat sub-par game after sub-par game until finally you’re GTA comes out, your Portal 2 or your Skyrim, and so you get your fill of excellence and begin again.

After several years of calumny related to its business in sex-related classified advertising, the company that owns the Village Voice, as well as a collection of other papers that used to be called the alternative press, has decided to sell the papers and keep the lucrative sex ads. In truth, this is more legerdemain than actual transaction, and nothing but some corporate filings will likely change. But put that aside for the moment.

The Village Voice and other like-minded papers have always been supported in part by sex ads. In the case of the Voice, that's more than 60 years of sex ads. Indeed, the Voice's ads might fairly be said to have helped make the world safe for a remarkable variety of fetishes.

Ksl-tv, an affiliate on NBC in Utah, will not air Ryan Murphy's The New Normal this fall, labeling the sitcom - which focuses on a gay couple and its surrogate's family - as "inappropriate" material.

“From time to time we may struggle with content that crosses the line in one area or another,” Jeff Simpson, CEO of Ksl’s parent company, Bonneville International, told the Salt Lake Tribune. “The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive.”

Ksl is owned by Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and chose not to air The Playboy Club last fall for similar reasons.

The New Normal star Ellen Barkin referred to the move as "blatantly homophobic" and wondered how the affiliate could justify airings of Law & Order: Svu, but not her sitcom. She added:

The upcoming Ryan Murphy comedy, which focuses on a gay couple who are having their first baby through a surrogate, was deemed inappropriate by the Mormon-owned station.

Lionsgate has confirmed to EW that they have acquired the rights to the 1970 Jack Finney novel Time and Again, news first reported by Variety’s Showblitz. The time travelling adventure follows New York illustrator Simon Morley, who — by way of a military experiment — goes back in time to 1882 and falls in love with a woman named Julia. Simon must decide whether to stay in the past with the woman he loves, or return to the present where he belongs.

The novel has been bounced around Hollywood for a number of years — Robert Redford even tried to get a project off the ground in the ‘90s.

Lionsgate has picked up rights to Jack Finney's illustrated novel Time and Again with Doug Liman set to helm and produce.

The novel follows Manhattan illustrator Simon Morley, who partakes in a secret government experiment in the mid 20th century. The experiment transports him back to 1882 New York, where he falls in love and struggles with the decision to either go back to his original time or stay in the past with his lover. The novel was originally published in 1970 and has sold 200,000 copies. The author also wrote the fantasy novel "The Body Snatchers" and a sequel to Time and Again titled From Time to Time.

The director is best known for his work on The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. He will also direct All You Need Is Kill, which stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

No production details have been released for the project.
