Daveigh Chase was unavailable to reprise her role as Lilo due to scheduling conflicts with Lilo & Stitch (2003), so she passed the role on to her best friend Dakota Fanning.
The DVD of the film contains a deleted scene which was released as an animated short film, with a total duration of 4:35 minutes and serves as a bridge between Stitch Has a Glitch and Stitch & Co. - Der Film (2003) (as well as Lilo & Stitch (2003)). In short, Stitch discovers Jumba's secret computer that reveals which creatures Jumba had used to create Stitch and also hints at his other 625 experiments. Stitch is afraid to find out what a monster he is, only for Jumba to come and explain how he found love when he met Lilo. The short was directed by Mike Disa and Tony Bancroft.
This is the first film in the Disneytoon Studios film library to receive a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Additionally, it is, to date, the only direct-to-video animated Disney sequel to receive that rating.
Originally the film was scheduled for a theatrical release (such as Peter Pan - Neue Abenteuer im Nimmerland (2002)), but was released on DVD and VHS on August 30, 2005, due to the poor performance of Das Dschungelbuch 2 (2003) although later Disney was sorry after the success in film sales.
This is the only sequel to Lilo & Stitch whose criticism and reception was similar to the original film, mainly because in this one themes similar to the first are touched on while the other two sequels focused on aliens.
