In 1981, Devo’s “Whip It” music video — a deliberately offensive and over-the-top send-up of Reagan-esque cowboy machismo, featuring singer Mark Mothersbaugh sadomasochistically whipping a stuntwoman on a rowdy dude ranch — was in high rotation on MTV. But just a year later, when the new wave band released the video for “That’s Good,” MTV, which at that point was ironically saturated with sexy videos featuring plenty of female flesh, strangely refused to play it without a re-edit.

The reason? An animated scene of a French fry being inserted into a donut’s hole was deemed too suggestive by network censors.

Universal released the comedy feature in theaters Aug. 19, 2005, and the film collected $177 million at the global box office ($293 million today). Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen star in the movie centering on Andy (Carell), an employee at an electronics store who agrees that it’s time to lose his virginity.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Apatow — who marked his feature directorial debut with the project — discussed the studio having major concerns after a few days of shooting, the Stormy Daniels footage that landed on the cutting room floor, his tough feedback for Kevin Hart and whether the movie could still get made today.

Challenge Season 40 looks to be an epic installment of the competition series, as a cast of 40 battles to win money.

Based on recent spoilers, recent eliminations continue to bring some surprising results regarding who is getting eliminated and who sent them home.

The 40 competitors filming in Vietnam include longtime MTV cast members and newcomers from various eras of The Challenge.

Today, the Sundance Film Festival unveiled its full lineup of official selections for its 2024 iteration. 82 films from 24 countries, eight episodic titles, and a New Frontier interactive experience will all be bound for Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah early next year for what will be the event's milestone 40th anniversary. As the proper start of the festival season, Sundance highlights a wide range of titles from around the world from emerging and established filmmakers alike, including some of the year's most anticipated projects. Everything kicks off at Noon Mt on January 18 in Park City with the Opening Night Gala: Celebrating 40 Years Presented by Chase Sapphire happening that evening.

The tranquil world of Hall & Oates was rocked this week by news that the longtime duo are in the midst of a nasty legal battle. The exact details are sealed, but we do know that Daryl Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against John Oates. There’s also a trademark dispute of some sort. Penske Media Corporation said Thursday that it has hired Thomas Ferguson as its new Vice President of Product Licensing. In this role, he will lead the team and develop new licensing extensions and partnerships to expand consumer touchpoints across Pmc’s portfolio of brands that includes Deadline.

Steve Carell will make his Broadway debut this spring as Vanya in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.

Carell will star alongside William Jackson Harper as Astrov, Jayne Houdyshell as Mama Voinitski, Mia Katigbak as Marina, Alfred Molina as Alexander Serabryakov, Alison Pill as Sonya and Anika Noni Rose as Yelena.

The adaptation, penned by Heidi Schreck and directed by Lila Neugebauer, is scheduled to begin previews at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on April 2, 2024, and open on April 24.

The classic play sees Sonya (Pill) and her uncle Vanya (Carell) living on a family farm in isolation, only to have their lives upended by Sonya’s sick father (Alfred Molina) and his wife (Anika Noni Rose), who move in with them.

Uncle Vanya will feature sets by Mimi Lien, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Lap Chi Chu and Elizabeth Harper, and sound by Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.

Just when you thought it was safe to commit elaborate crimes, Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot has returned. Both were directed by Branagh and written by Michael Green, and that creative team reunited for "A Haunting in Venice," which is based on Christie's novel "The Hallowe'en Party."

This time around, Hercule Poirot is retired and living in self-imposed exile in Venice, when a séance and a murder pull him back into his old ways -- though this time with a potentially supernatural twist. Audiences seem intrigued by this horror-tinged departure from the two previous movies, with Deadline reporting that "A Haunting in Venice" grossed $5.3 million on Friday (including Thursday previews) and is expected to gross around $14 million over its opening weekend.

Soon, fans of the Haunted Mansion won't have to take a trip to Disneyland to experience a scary ride. During the Walt Disney Studios Showcase, a presentation at this year's Destination D23, it was revealed that "Haunted Mansion" will soon be coming to home media beginning on October 4.

"Haunted Mansion" is based on the eponymous theme park ride, a staple of Disneyland since 1969. The film, directed by Justin Simien ("Dear White People"), features single mom Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) moving into the haunted Gracey Manor in New Orleans with her son. Soon, they run afoul of the ghosts, such as the Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) and the decapitated Madame Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis), now imprisoned in a crystal ball. So, they recruit a team of priests, academics, and psychics to exorcise the Manor.

"Haunted Mansion" coming to home media in October sounds like Disney learning its lesson from releasing the film theatrically in July.

Apologies to André Bazin, Pauline Kael, and Andrew Sarris, but Roger Ebert was unquestionably the most influential film critic of the cinema's first century. In fact, unless the media landscape is drastically altered over the next few years, he may also wind up being the last film critic who ever truly mattered.

I do not mean this as a put-down of my colleagues. If you actually read film criticism nowadays, you know that there's never been a more thrillingly diverse assortment of voices in this too-cluttered arena. Manohla Dargis, Justin Chang, Scott Tobias, Angelica Jade Bastién, and Bilge Ebiri are must-reads in this house, and I could name a few dozen more who are reliably incisive and original in their thinking. I don't have time to read all of the critics I respect, which is both a frustrating and good thing.

But be honest, do you actually read film criticism nowadays?...

For those keeping track at home, we've officially hit the "Utter nonsense" portion of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes -- and, as has been the case since the start, there's nobody else to blame but the studios. Their representatives, the AMPTP, have thus far resorted to some of the most underhanded and casually cruel methods to maintain their iron grip on the billions of dollars of profits generated by the film and television industries. From obstructing picket lines and creating unsafe environments for those on strike to unmasking themselves as straight-up supervillains by threatening to literally starve writers out and force them to lose their homes before coming back to the bargaining table, the studios seem intent on proving that there are simply no depths they'll refuse to go to.

With such scorched-earth methods clearly dictating the overall negotiating policy of the studios, one would assume that this has...
