He decides to launch terror attacks and bring an end to peace, and for this purpose he shoots and gravely injures an Indian army officer, then decides to do away with the man's daughter Sanjana, who is studying at university. Raghavan and his men descend on the campus and hold over 100 students hostage. There is only one student who can save them, and his name is Ram, he claims he is a student, but is here on a mission--a mission that when told will reveal his real identity and two plans which he must carry out simultaneously.—Sumitra (corrected by Iqbal)
  • The governments of India and Pakistan have launched, "Project Milaap", where both the governments will release the POVs from the previous wars. Raghavan, a deranged ex-army-man-turned-militant, does not want the peaceful operation to turn to reality and makes an attempt on Gen. Amarjeet Bakshi's life. While trying to rescue Gen. Bakshi, Brigadier Shekhar Sharma falls prey to a stray bullet. On his deathbed he confesses to his son Major Ramprasad Sharma that his wife and son had left him many years ago due to his infidelity. He tells Ram his last wish: his family be reunited under one roof--and then he dies. Meanwhile, Gen. Bakshi tells Ram that his teenage daughter Sanjana's life is in danger, and asks him to go undercover to Darjeeling and pose as a student in Sanjana's class . As the fate would have it, Ram learns that his younger brother Laxman "Lucky" is studying at the same college. So Maj. Ram starts off on his dual mission: personal and national.—Soumitra
  • Laxman Prasad Sharma lives with his mother Madhu in a small town in India. He studies in a local college and has a sweetheart, tomboyish Sanjana Bakshi. The College gets a new student when Ram joins; initially there is considerable friction between Ram and Lakhsman, which soon turns to close friendship. Lakhsman even rents Ram a room in his house and introduces him to his mother. Then all hell breaks loose on campus when renegade former Indian army soldier Raghavan Datta holds about 100 students hostage to stop the prisoner swap between India and Pakistan. Raghavan also exposes Ram for what he really is--a fact that Ram had managed to conceal from all the townspeople and collegians, and an ulterior motive for entering the lives of Lakhsman and Madhu.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Synopsis

  • The Indian army is working on Project Milaap - a project designed to end the long-lasting conflict between India and Pakistan. The project is simple - Indian prisoners will be released from Pakistan and Pakistani prisoners will be released from India. General Amar Singh Bakshi (Kabir Bedi) and Brigadier Shekhar Sharma (Naseeruddin Shah) both wish to see Project Milaap turn into a reality.

Raghavan Dutta, a former Indian special forces soldier discharged for executing Pakistani citizens in revenge for his son's death, runs a militant group with a former comrade, Captain Khan (Murali Sharma), where he sets against peace between the two rival countries.

During a television show about the project, Raghavan and his men attack the General. However, they are soon stopped by Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh Khan) the son of Brigadier Sharma. However, Shekhar is killed when he tries to stop Raghavan from killing the General. As Shekhar is on his death bed, he tells Ram that he also has another son named Lakshman (Zayed Khan) and a wife Madhu (Kirron Kher), both of whom left him when he committed adultery 20 years ago with Ram's biological mother.

Shekhar requests Ram to reconcile with his estranged family and that his ashes will be immersed by both his sons, stating that he can finally be at peace only if his family forgives him.

Meanwhile, General Bakshi sends Ram on a undercover operation to protect his estranged daughter, Sanjana (Amrita Rao), who is studying at St. Paul's College in Darjeeling. Ram reluctantly accepts when Bakshi informs him that Lucky is also studying in the same college. Bakshi convinces Ram to enter the college as a student than as a teacher, in order to better watch over Sanjana. Yogendra "Yogi" Agarwal (Boman Irani), college principal is the only person who would know Ram's true identity.

Upon arriving, Ram struggles with adjusting to college life as he is much older than all the students, including some professors. At the college, Lakshaman is better known as Lucky, he is somewhat of an inspiration because he has failed his last year exams three times. He is also best friends with Sanjana, who is in love with him.

Ram encounters Sanjana and Lucky, but both do not want to be near him due to his age. A college student helps Ram hack the college computer to find out Lucky's identity as his brother.

At first, Lucky and Sanjana do not like Ram and go out of their way to make his life hell. During a race to capture the college flag from the roof, Lucky ends up hanging off the roof of the university, but Ram heroically saves his life. As a result, both Lucky and Sanjana agree to befriend Ram. Ram is soon invited to stay at Lucky's house where he shares a special bond with Madhu.

Ram also becomes smitten with the Chemistry teacher Chandini (Sushmita Sen). Ram also brings Madhu and Lakshman closer by helping them bond during his stay there.

Meanwhile, Raghavan has arrived in Darjeeling and sends one of his men, Khan to shoot Sanjana's friend Percy (Rajiv Panjabi). He wants the General to know that if he can kill one of Sanjana's friends, he can easily kill Sanjana too. When Khan goes to do this, Ram is able to stop him and has him arrested. Raghavan learns about this and is enraged - not only that Khan has been arrested but that Ram is at the college. It is revealed that Raghavan was once an army officer who killed innocent Pakistanis and as a result, lost his place in the army.

At the college, Ram constantly flirts with Chandini. She gets irritated but at the same time, seems to have feelings for him. Lucky and Sanjana also start to fall in love, once Sanjana changes her tomboy image. Raghavan arrives at the university masquerading as the new physics professor after his gang kidnaps Madhav Rasai (Satish Shah), a physics professor, and threatens him to resign and recommend Raghavan as "Professor Raghav Dutta" in his place.

During a prom, Ram thwarts Raghavan's gang from abducting Chandni. After meeting with Sanjana, Ram requests Raghavan to drop them both off with her father at her hostel, where Sanjana reconciles with her father. After that night, Sanjana and Chandni discover Ram's true identity as an army officer. At the same time, Raghavan learns about Ram and Lucky's relationship and reveals Ram's true identity to Lucky and Madhu.

On being confronted by Lucky and Madhu, Ram breaks the news of Shekhar's death and informs them that Shekhar's last wish was that they reconcile. As they are unwilling to accept him yet, Ram leaves their home and the university, but his revelation shocks them. Later, Raghavan holds the whole university hostage and demands the cancellation of Project Milaap along with the return of Captain Khan and Ram as hostages in exchange for all the students' and teachers' lives.

On being informed about this situation, Ram immediately returns to the university. Along the way he encounters Madhu and apologizes to her for having concealed his true identity.

At the university, Ram informs Khan that Raghavan is doing nothing for the country and is only carrying out a misplaced feud on the Pakistanis for killing his son and offers an opportunity to Khan to do something for the country. Accompanying Khan, Ram enters the building and gets subsequently shot by Khan. Ram survives, and Khan informs him that his heart has changed regarding his allegiances and proceeds to kill the guards, thus freeing the students. Raghavan shoots Khan dead at point blank range for his betrayal. During a prolonged combat between Ram and Raghavan, Ram finally kills Raghavan by removing the safety pin from the latter's hand grenade.

Lucky helps Ram escape from the ensuing explosion from aboard a helicopter and the two happily embrace each other as brothers. Project Milaap is a success, and all the prisoners are exchanged triumphantly. Ram and Lucky immerse Shekhar's ashes together with Madhu tearfully looking on. In the end, Lucky and Ram finally graduate, and the entire university rejoices.
