Once upon a time, somewhere in the span between F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hunter S. Thompson, a dapper posse of aristocrat journalists thrived by combining pre-war sophistication with post-war sexuality. Belonging neither to the old world or the new, they were prophets of their present moment, a transitional group that helped lay the foundation for a culture that wouldn’t be able to accommodate them.
Gay Talese was perhaps the most notable of the group. The godfather of indulgent celebrity profiles, Talese elevated an entire medium by fleshing a routine portrait into a genuine piece of literature; published in the April 1966 issue of Esquire, “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” might well outlive the magazine that paid for it. Talese became almost as famous as the people featured in his work, and his reputation protected him from the rest of the 20th century; it seemed unthinkable that someone who could write...

A thyroid operation every ten years, plus regular libations of an eerie green liquid, has allowed Anton Diffring to live over a hundred years without looking a year over forty. A Colorado motel owner claims he spent decades spying on his guests as they had sex, used the bathroom and even committed murder - and he's only revealing the truth now that the statute of limitations has passed. The shocking revelations, made in this week's issue of The New Yorker, have brought scrutiny on the owner, Gerald Foos, and on the author of the magazine story, legendary journalist Gay Talese - who kept Foos's secret since 1980. We’ve scoured the scenes of Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, to dig out its nerdy details. Spoilers ahead…
Warning: contains spoilers for The Abominable Bride.
If, by the time Sherlock special The Abominable Bride came around, your usually-shining powers of observation had been dulled by New Year’s indulgence, never fear.
We’ve hunted around the episode with (mostly) clear heads and stumbled upon a few fun titbits, from Wilder the Diogenes butler, to set design jokes, nods to Doyle’s original stories, Paget’s illustrations, previous Sherlock episodes and more…
1. This dilated pupil (we'd suggest Cumberbatch’s rather than Freeman’s?) is the first hint-in-hindsight that what’s to follow involves narcotics.
2. Both A Study In Pink and The Abominable Bride start with Watson waking up from a nightmare of his time in an Afghan war, centuries apart.

Photographer celebrated for his informal portraits of artists, actors and musicians
David Farrell, who has died aged 93, was known primarily for his photographic portraits of the most prominent artists, actors, authors and, particularly, musicians of his time. These ranged from classical performers such as Yehudi Menuhin, Ravi Shankar and Jacqueline du Pré to Louis Armstrong, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He would take his portable darkroom with him to filming locations, where he photographed Albert Finney, Julie Christie, Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson, among others. His main body of work dates from the mid-1950s to the 1980s, by which time he was working primarily in cinema, but he continued with his photography well into the digital age.

Chicago – In contrast with the other subpar supernatural blockbusters released last August, Nick Murphy’s “The Awakening” lacks the cheesy thrills of “The Possession” and the hilarious ineptitude of “The Apparition.” Instead, it’s a humorless and ponderous bore buoyed only slightly by its vivid lead performance from Rebecca Hall, a supremely gifted character actress who has yet to receive the cinematic showcase she deserves.
As headstrong skeptic Florence, Hall charges through the picture, determined to debunk every rumored instance of paranormal activity. Sadly, the clunky script co-authored by Murphy and Stephen Volk spells out all of her inner turmoil with the most dreadfully monotonous exposition. Even before she’s swept into the film’s central mystery, the audience is already bored to tears.
Blu-ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Murphy has a background in BBC documentaries (such as the splendid reality TV miniseries, “Manor House”), so perhaps he was attracted to the material...

It’s the film that divided audiences at our local Late Nite Grindhouse program earlier this year but we still feel it should be seen by all fans of genre cinema.

Season 2 of the addictive Downton Abbey premieres Jan. 8 (check local listings), but PBS is hoping fans will keep another date in mind: On Jan. 22, it will air a one-hour special, Secrets of the Manor House, which is a described as a nonfiction look into the lives of British aristocracy during the early 1900s. Fingers crossed we hear about sex, scandals, and someone with as biting a tongue as Maggie Smith’s Violet Crawley.
According to PBS, the first season of Downton Abbey was the third-most watched Masterpiece program in the last 22 years.

The famous Irish manor that director John Huston once owned has been put back on the market. The house is the site where the celebrated American filmmaker, who was of Scotch-Irish descent, raised his famous actress daughter, Anjelica Huston. The filmmaker once described his home, St. Cleran’s Manor House in Craughwell, County Galway, as “the most beautiful house in Ireland.” The property, which was restored by American media mogul Merv Griffin, is now on the market for €3.7 million ($5.5 million) and is being sold by a trust. The house was briefly put up for sale in 2002/2003 for €4.5 million but was subsequently withdrawn. Coldwell Banker Estates is now determined to sell the manor. The prominent home was built in 1784 by one of Galway’s original 14 clans, the Burkes. In the 1950s, Huston saw the manor while on vacation in the west of Ireland, and purchased the manor for around £35,000. He lived...

Is punctuality the key to booking the job? Well, that—along with being prepared and having diverse interests—certainly helped Lisa Keppel land the role of Helen Stanton in Chapman University's production of "A Question of Sex," a farce set in London in 1900.Arriving early to the audition, Keppel unknowingly chatted up one of the producers she was about to read for. "We struck up a little bit of a conversation about ballet, because we had both done ballet in the past," Keppel says, "and we were talking about just the heat and random things." After realizing that this was one of the people she'd be auditioning for, "it kind of broke the ice a little bit," she says. "It made it a little less nerve-racking going into the audition."As for her promptness, director Adam Fox says a director appreciates it "when you know that someone is there on...
