'It Will Not Be a Remake': Tremors Creators Tease New Movie (& Kevin Bacon's Possible Return) After Winning Back the Rights
Image
Tremorscreators Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson discuss bringing Kevin Bacon back to the franchise after a major creative win.

Per Bloody Disgusting, the original creators and creative team behind Tremors have officially won back the rights to the original film, opening the door for a new entry free of studio interference. In a statement released by Maddock, Wilson, director Ron Underwood, and producer Nancy Roberts, the team noted that they are expressly avoiding reading any "outside ideas."

The statement continues, "We are discussing a return-to-Perfection sequel, and one or two more outlandish ideas featuring graboids in new settings. Whatever we decide to pitch to Hollywood, it will not be a remake the first movie with a new cast. Nor will it be a version of our original script for Tremors 5." The statement also confirms that the team is "considering ideas that feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Val, but no promises!

Back to Perfection: Revisiting the ‘Tremors’ TV Series 22 Years Later
Image
The early 2000s saw a brief but exciting wave of new Tremors media. After the film side seemingly became dormant, following the 1996 sequel to the original Tremors, a third installment went straight to video in ‘01. And two years later, Tremors: The Series burst from the collective imagination of franchise co-creators Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson, and landed on the mid-season schedule at Syfy (née the Sci-Fi Channel). The show didn’t last all that long, much to the disappointment of fans everywhere, however, its enjoyability is endless. This TV show is remembered for trying some new things in the Tremors-verse, all while illustrating just why good ol’ Perfection is the ideal setting for any and all Graboid storytelling.

Maddock and Wilson first tinkered around with the notion of a serialized Tremors sometime back in the mid-nineties, after Tremors 2: Aftershocks, and several of those ideas were put to use in the 2003 television show.

6 Kaiju TV Shows to Watch If You Enjoyed “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”
Image
Television has long ridden the coattails of cinema when coming up with new programming, serializing popular genres like Westerns and Crime Thrillers since its very inception. However, the obvious budgetary limitations of TV production mean that certain kinds of stories are less suited for the small screen. Thankfully, we’re lucky enough to live in a time when technology and the streaming wars have finally caught up to film when it comes to producing the type of long-form content we’ve always yearned for.

Case in point, Legendary and Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters achieved the unthinkable by bringing blockbuster-worthy Kaijus to the small screen at a scale we’ve never seen before. And though the show has already aired its finale, I know that Kaiju fans are likely still clamoring for more TV-based monsters, so we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six TV shows to watch after Monarch.

Tremors 7 Gets a New Title and Official Rating
Image
Tremors 7 has been given an official title, as well as a rating from the MPAA. The sequel in the long-running creature franchise, which will once again bring back Michael Gross as the gun-toting Burt Gummer, was originally going under the title of Tremors: Island Fury. The movie is in the can and is expected to arrive later this year in the fall. Now, we have word that the title has changed ahead of the release to Tremors: Shrieker Island. Additionally, the latest entry in the series has been handed a PG-13 rating, which is right in line with what we've come to expect in the past.

Per the Motion Picture Association of America, Tremors: Shrieker Island is rated PG-13 "for creature violence, language throughout, some gore and suggestive/drug references." While no full synopsis has officially been revealed by Universal Pictures at this time, the latest sequel is said...

Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy - Im Bann der Dämonen (1997)
8 TV shows based on horror movies -- and how they fared
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy - Im Bann der Dämonen (1997)
With the recent successes of such TV series as "American Horror Story," "Hannibal" and Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," horror is hot on the small-screen right now -- so much so that in addition to MTV's forthcoming small-screen "Scream" spinoff, TV studios are in the midst of bringing a horde of cinematic fright-film properties to television, ranging from "Shutter Island" to "The Devil's Advocate" to "The Mist." In light of this, I've taken a look back at eight previous horror movie-to-tv translations and analyzed why they hit -- or didn't -- with audiences. "Bates Motel" (A&E) Based on: "Psycho" Aired: 2013-present Why it did (or didn't) work:a great pedigree ("Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse), a terrific cast (Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore) and generally positive critical notices gave "Bates Motel" a sheen of respectability that worked well in this Golden Age of prestige television. The show has so far aired three successful seasons...

On ABC’s Welcome Back, Kotter, which ran from September 1975 to June 1979, she costarred as Julie Kotter, wife to Gabe Kaplan’s titular Brooklyn school teacher.

Star Wars Rebels — Interview With Composer Kevin Kiner
Star Wars Rebels composer Kevin Kiner gives an interview on the influence that composer John Williams has had on him and the score of the animated TV Series. Kiner talks about his huge guitar collection and how having been in a rock band allows him to add something different to the score of Rebels. We even get to hear some temp tracks in development and how Kiner mixes in Williams touches from the score of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Rebels acts as a bridge between the time periods of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and it's really interesting to hear some of those familiar melodies come back, in some part, into the show.

I couldn't help checking out Kiner's IMDb page and over the years he has done the score for a lot of TV and a few video games. Some notable projects other than the aforementioned are Stargate Sg-1,...

‘The Tenant’ Review
Stars: Kristen Dalton, David Arquette, Victor Browne, Morissa O’Mara, Alana O’Mara, Franny Hocking, Ken Baumann, Lorraine Nicholson, Bellamy Young, Rome Shadanloo | Written by Nick Antosca | Directed by Chris Jaymes

Originally released in the Us in 2012 under the title of The Cottage and no doubt renamed to avoid confusion with the similarly themed British film from 2008, The Tenant sees Chloe (Dalton) and Michael Carpenter rent out the cottage behind their house to charming novelist, Robert Mars (Arquette) the whole family are delighted, but soon after he moves in the family start to fear they are being stalked and watched. Their fears are heightened when a family friend goes missing but with no evidence and the law against them they struggle to fight a deadly threat in their own backyard.

The Tenant is one of those slow-burning horror/thriller hybrids that expends a lot of energy in setting up the...

Clip joint: Giant people
Hollywood loves a big, scary beast, but what about super-sizing the humble human? Clip joint looks up magic mega-moments

Tinseltown has been convincingly developing the magnificence of the mighty in the animal kingdom for decades. A simple shift in perspective transformed King Kong (1933) from a large ape into a monster. Similarly the terror in Tremors (1990) lies not in the idea that we're being chased by sand worms, but that they're half-a-mile long.

Hollywood likes to super-size, to make things larger than life, but when it comes to clumsy old humanity it's much harder to make size scary. The Amazing Colossal Man (1957) looked corny, Allison Hayes's 50ft Woman looked bored, even on the attack. Jason and The Argonauts's (1963) bronze behemoth Talos had the stuff, but he was technically an automaton.

Human giants are smaller, sillier and far less malevolent. Their stomping ground is the cartoon or the gentle family comedy.

Ricky D’s Favourite Cult Films of All Time: #13 ‘Slither’
Slither

Directed by James Gunn

Written by James Gunn

2006, USA

Gross-out horror comedy is my guilty pleasure. Among the best are Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, and James Gunn’s Slither. Essentially a pastiche of the zombie and alien-invasion genres, Slither features a 50′s sci-fi plot with gross-out gore making for an effective, even if familiar, horror film.

This tongue-in-cheek horror flick shows off first-time director Gunn’s skill for blending comedy and horror. Slither recalls Tremors, only with much more gore: its the best kind of B-movie, one whose laughs are just as effective and intentional as it imaginative gross-out-effects. More importantly, Gunn probes the genre’s cliches without ever mocking them. Slither is a labor of love made by a horror aficionado who knows his shit, and along the way, he subsumes an onslaught of cinematic references to genre conventions, from John Carpenter’s...

Look What Broke Into The Wrong Rec Room! It's Tremors The Complete Series On DVD
Burt Gummer lives! I've never grown tired of the Tremors franchise even as it got sillier and sillier. The chance to dig in to the TV show was just as rewarding. Only those who don't care about video quality need apply though. On my 52 inch screen this looked pretty grainy. And there aren't any real special features to speak of here. Just all 13 episodes of worm killing, graboid grabbin, ass blastin fun. Christopher Lloyd has a fun turn as a scientist turned desert rat and there's some enjoyable tension between cast members but, like the sequels, the show never quite caught the magic of the original film.

Sci Fi preps launch in Spain
Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Torri Higginson, Rachel Luttrell, Paul McGillion, Jason Momoa, and Mitch Pileggi in Stargate: Atlantis (2004)
MADRID -- NBC Global Networks and Spain's Sogecable have signed a deal for the Sci Fi Channel to launch June 1 in Spain on Sogecable-owned satellite platform Digital Plus. Launched in the U.S. in 1992, Sci Fi already has international versions operating in the U.K., Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. The agreement with Sogecable is nonexclusive for Spain, paving the way for the channel to grow onto the burgeoning broadband and cable markets in the country. Sci Fi Spain's initial programming lineup will include the Spanish debuts of series Stargate Atlantis and Tremors, plus 7 Days, American Gothic, The Sentinel, Battlestar Galactica, Earth 2, The Incredible Hulk and The Invisible Man. The deal follows the debuts of new terrestrial broadcasters Cuatro and La Sexta -- launched in November and March, respectively. Both nets are betting heavily on U.S. series in their programming lineups.

New Line gets Angry for Davis' 'Shoot'
New Line Cinema is picking up Shoot 'Em Up, a hard-core action project from writer-director Michael Davis, with Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Rick Benattar producing through Angry Films. Davis comes from the low-budget, indie comedy world -- Slamdance audience award winner Eight Days a Week and 100 Girls are among his credits -- and has done storyboards for such fare as Pee-wee's Playhouse and Tremors. After writing Shoot, Davis drew on his storyboard skills to illustrate about 17,000 individual drawings that he then animated to show how he would direct the movie's action. The animatic trailer so impressed New Line that it is not only buying the project but also signing Davis to a two-picture option.

MIPTV: Sci Fi U.K. morphing focus, logo
CANNES -- The Sci Fi channel in the United Kingdom is geared up for a major rebrand and reposition in the market, with some £2 million ($3.65 million) earmarked for the campaign. "We are trying to open up the definition of Sci Fi to include the paranormal and fantasy," Sci Fi U.K. president Dan Marks said in annoucning the moves Tuesday at MIPTV. "We were appealing more to men, but we are now trying to achieve a more 50-50 split (among) men and women." The rebranding involves an overall programming shift -- and an updating of the Web site and off-air marketing materials -- that began late last year with new shows Veritas (a Tomb Raider spinoff) and early this year with another new show, Tremors: The Series. These shows have given the channel its best ratings of the past five years.
