The director, screenwriters, cinematographer and the two leads deserve the warmest praise for what they have done here. The primary defect in this film is in the performances of the six supporting "brothers" and sisters roles. Only in the scenes where they supported the main characters were these characters worth watching. This is probably partly due to weaknesses in the script and partly to the weaknesses of the actors. It was even obvious from some of the outtakes on the DVD, that the brothers were supposed to have had outright murder in mind, this was thankfully edited out of the print, so it's obvious that the script could not have been perfect as originally submitted.
The director/screenwriter Gary Hardwick has mentioned that he had to adapt the original script to African American culture and shows himself here to be very talented. What is obvious from the fine performances of LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union, is that he certainly could have paid more attention to the minor roles than he did.
Such an uneven movie! LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union deserve a 10. Cinematography, a 10. Script, an 8 - the story is basically good - as a romantic comedy, it works! Director gets an 7. The rest of the brothers and sisters get a 3, if not lower. I'm thinking if I could send Hardwick an email and ask why, he would answer, "The studio got what they paid for." What a shame. There are a lot of moments where this film hits the ball out of the park, and so it needs to be recommended.

Another movie base on William Shakespeare - The Taming of the Shrew but this time a black and older people version. (No racism intended)
Three Friends hired Ray to escort Eva, so that she would be out of their marriage life after she influence too much on their wife.
Though I have seen this in Ten Things I Hate About You, I still very much enjoying this movie and somewhat surpass my expectation. LL Cool J is great here and the flow of the movie is just right.
Overall this is a good adaptation.
Recommendation: If You Are Over 25 Watch This, Younger Watch 10 Things I Hate About You.
Rating: 6.5/10 (Grade: C+)

I enjoyed this movie. I'm a fan of LL Cool J (even though his acting isn't great) and was impressed with this unbelievable story of love (what woman alive would actually forgive him after what he did?) The acting was pushed at best but in the end, this movie still managed to crack a few laughs and entertain for the full hour and a half. A cute date movie....i guess.

A nice normal movie that happens to have an all black cast. I don't feel it was a "black movie". Cultural idioms aside, anyone could relate to the language and themes of the movie. Nicely done. I feel Gabby U really performed well in her role...made me forget it was her. LL gave a great performance as well. The worst was the Royale as the gay guy...just not happening: He needed to be more flamboyant to be funny...the lo-key thing didn't work, though he had some otherwise funny lines....the director MUST've held him back, cause I've seem this guy in action before...he's as funny as anybody, if not funnier than most.
All said, I'll probably buy this one on DVD. I hope these types of movies continue to be made.

Watching it requires more from the audience than the actors. The story and direction is what you'd expect from religious TV. 4 of 10 simply because the overall effect isn't horrible, just lackluster.
Wait for a TV release. In fact, you can wait for it to appear on public TV since the R rating is really only there as part of a marketing gimmick to get more guys to watch. It's a television movie of the week with a few naughty words thrown in.
Yes, it's a romantic comedy, with little comedy, delivered just in time for Valentine's day because you'd have a hard time getting people to watch it for free at any other time of the year.
So what's positive about it? It can be funny and critical of some common social perceptions present in early 21st century USA. But there's a lot of pain for that gain.

Despite criticism, this manages to deliver a bit of comedy and drama.
Gabrielle Union gives a standout performance as the unbelievable Eva Dandridge who needs someone like Ray to knock her from her high horse but she's that way cos she's taken too many knocks from life. She is pure evil.
LL Cool J is a bit too neat or not too expressive maybe it's the role maybe not but he cuts a slightly bland figure.
Between the two of them, they manage to create a cracking chemistry that sizzles and makes all other characters pale by comparison.
This movie was touching and sincere for a Black movie(a trait which is played down in most Black flicks), there's been a recent departure from the gangsta and hood epics or drugs and money flicks.
Gabrielle Union was a delight to watch as ice queen Eva Dandridge(who's been jilted by a one time-fiancée), watching over her sisters with a ruthless passion and closely guarding her heart against intrusion. I kinda felt sympathy when I realised she'd given up on her life (when her parents died)to raise and care for her siblings, but the time came to take a backseat, she moved on and was woman enough to breach the gap she'd created between her siblings and their men.
LL Cool J was smooth as the player who took her on a bet. I admire the way he brought Eva down to earth, that's what women respect in a man. Knowing your own self worth, never kowtowing to them but meeting them at the right point and giving in only if need be. This may sound sexist but show me a sista or woman who'd respect her man if he yessed to her all the time. Not One!!
Gabrielle and J simply stole the movie, the supporting cast are just supporting(no insults meant), there was no one who came close to touching the two leads not because they were the stars but they infused strength and dynamism into their respective roles, they breathed life into them...
It's good to see Black movies with a forte like this; it portrays us as intelligent and coming of age, which we did centuries ago anyway!!
LEAD ME INTO THIS!!!!

Sexist film and without the slightest grace, the few fun scenes are not fun (?!?!?!?!).... I liked the meeting of the girls and boys in the beauty salon, the texts are the most fun and interesting... Well regular...

Deliver Us from Eva isn't a perfect film and it's not supposed. The film is a urban romantic comedy and the film does have a lot of heart. LL Cool J and Gaberille Union have very good chemisty togetehr and carry the film. Essence Attkins, Megan Good and Robinee Lee all dyme pieces also do acting jobs and the men in their lives played by Mel Jackson and Duane Martin make the film enjoyable also. If you just want a fresh fun movie then check this out.

Romantic Comedy "Deliver us from Eva" is a light comedy that plays the story right.
The premisses of the story are ultilized perfectly, with the characters rocking a spot on chemistry, while their romantic relationship gradually develops. As for the sisters, they were adorable together. The brothers in law, moreover, were laugh out loud entertaining and really carried the comedy element when things turned too serious on the romantic front.
However, the story did got stale towards the ending. Still, the actors and actresses of the cast, especially the leading lady, did an amazing job with thier performances.

If you like LL Cool J, then this movie is for you. It was pretty good and had some funny moments. Most of which come from the smart mouth comments made by no-nonsense Eva. There are also some good gossip scenes at the beauty shop. The story is nothing original; you know exactly where it is going. Of course, the player falls for the girl whose heart he is supposed to break. They just made a mistake at the end by having a really cheesy, knight comes riding in on a white horse, type of moment. It was too hollywood and didn't really go with the rest of the film.
FINAL VERDICT: There is no mystery with this movie. It is what it is. So, if you like mildly funny moments with a stereotypical romantic plot, then you may want to give this a try.

I'm sure we have all had the friend or relative member that likes to meddle, so I'm sure that we can relate to this movie....The acting was decent, but not great, and of course there is a rapper lead actor......Overall, the storyline is very true and even the fairytale ending isn't overly bad...I would recommend this as a fun fluff movie to watch....

After reading amateur critics here, I am compelled to weigh in. This film is fun, light, and enjoyable. Gabrielle Union is a wonderful actress. She effortlessly handles this role and plays Eva so well that her character is quite annoying (and that's the point). LL Cool J does a decent job, but this role is earlier in his career and he has shown improvement over time as an actor. Overall the ensemble cast is plausible and good. This is a subtle comedy that is meant to tickle your funny bone not make you laugh out loud. I love to support Black cinema, so I recommend watching this film at any time, but especially during Black History Month. I support Black filmmakers and actors. Watch this film, you'll enjoy it.
This movie had me laughing out loud from beginning to end. I saw the DVD version so the LL Cool J and K-Ci & JoJo videos helped wrap up the story lines. Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J were amazing. It was great to watch the personality transformations as they happened. Even Jacqui lightened up a bit and she seemed more stiff than Eva at times. It's a really funny movie. You don't have to think too much, you can just sit back and enjoy. Make sure you watch the deleted scenes at the end as well. It helps to clear up some gaps. It actually would have been nice to have these re-added with the release of the DVD version. I don't know why filmmakers don't do that. See it! You won't regret it!
You know, I really enjoyed this film, the first time, when Elizabeth Taylor starred in it, nearly half a decade ago! How many times can Hollywood be allowed to rehash classics for a racial or socioeconomic niche, a la "Ten Things I Hate About You," or "Romeo Must Die." The time has come for critics and moviegoers alike to tell the established production front that such generational amalgams of pop culture and old fashioned character do not stand the test of time, like fifteen minutes. If you're ready to see the same movie for the hundredth time, don't bother. Just go pick up a nice little book called "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare." Maybe you've heard of it...

When I start to watch this movie I wasn't expecting the movie of my life but it's a good romantic comedy. The 105 min of this movie seems 10min.Good cast, nice interpretation and a reasonable direction. If you already saw Breaking all the rules with Jamie Joxx don't waste your time because it is very similar. Gabrielle Union seems to like this kind of movies and she do it well but not perfect. It also had a good plot which kept my attention. In resume this is a film that you don't have to push your mind to the limits to understand him, it is a very light movie, watchable, I'm sure you gonna have lots of laughs and when the movie its finished you will have a large smile in your face.
Punning titles are rarely a promising sign in the world of movies. Too often it seems that the film has been fashioned around the title, and too often the title is the best thing about the film. Deliver Us From Eva isn't a badly-made movie, but it is a predictable and lazily-written one that eventually outstays its welcome despite some spirited performances from an attractive black cast.
Gabrielle Union plays the eponymous Eva, an uptight twenty-something health inspector who has raised her three younger sisters single-handedly since the death of their parents when she was 18. Much to the chagrin of their male partners, Eva is still running her sister's lives, even though they are all now adults. To put an end to this situation, they hire master player and meat delivery man – make of that what you will – Ray (a miscast LL Cool J) to woo her into moving to another city where he can then dump her before returning home. Immediately it becomes evident to even the most casual viewer that this is a perfect plan. A plan without a flaw of any description. How can it possibly go wrong? Hmmm, we think, looks like the writers might have written themselves into a corner with this one
As you might have already gathered, Deliver Us From Eva's biggest problem is that it announces its divorce from reality within seconds of the opening credits. Even movies like this, which inhabit a self-contained urban never-never land in which the real world never intrudes, need to possess some degree of believability, but this one doesn't seem to care whether it makes sense on any level. Eva starts out as an overbearing monster with a hair-trigger temper, all tightly-buttoned business suits and severe hairstyle, but is swiftly transformed butterfly-like into a hip and sassy 'sister' by the attentions of a nondescript man who stands out from the crowd thanks only to his size. Funny how Hollywood comedy screenwriters so often seem to believe that all a stuffy woman needs to lose her repression is a good seeing to in the bedroom.
Eva's sisters, each of them bright and beautiful, seem curiously content to allow their older sibling to dominate their lives, and begin every other sentence with the words 'Eva says ' like mindless dolls with a key and a piece of string in their back. Quite frankly, rather than wanting to get closer to these Stepford candidates you'd think the hapless trio of men would be seeking out ways of putting a little distance between them and their partners. Given that Ray's seduction methods possess the sophistication of an average nineteen year-old's, the ferocious Eva's defences crumble surprisingly quickly, and it isn't long before she's rolling around in his lap like a playful kitten. While this may have just about got by had someone with a little more charisma than LL Cool J taken on the role of Ray, the former rapper's performance is so understated that he manages to conjure no sexual chemistry whatsoever with the delectable Miss Union (and I write that with the fearlessness of someone who knows that a large body of water separates me and the rapper-dude). Mr. J is a curious choice for the role: it calls for a smooth seducer, an effortless ladies man with an air of confidence that LL (what the hell do you call him, anyway?) lacks. He was presumably selected to lure in the young black audience, but he's too big and clumsy for the part of Ray, and never looks comfortable. His character is all wrong for the feisty Eva, anyway, and that's another of the movie's weaknesses. The characters are either paper-thin or hopelessly stereotypical (eg: an outrageously camp homosexual hairdresser – I wonder how long it took them to dream up that one). While the minor characters are picked off-the-shelf from some kind of screenwriter's equivalent of Wal-Mart, the central characters' are never filled out, and their actions are designed solely to drive the action along with no consideration given to consistency or logic. Once the basic premise is established, the movie embarks on a slow journey toward farce, without any stops for development or insight, before taking an ill-advised left turn toward a conclusion as corny as it is contrived. And it arrives in such a rush that you can be forgiven for believing that director Gary Hardwick wants to get the journey over with as much as the viewer does.
The only real positive to be taken from the film is Gabrielle Union on whose shoulders, thanks to Cool J's reserved performance, most of its weight falls. She shoulders the burden admirably, proving herself to be an adept and appealing light comedienne, and she deserves to be seen in more – and better – leading roles.
To try to defend movies like this by declaring that they aren't supposed to be taken seriously is something of a cop-out. How much leeway do you give a flick simply because it's a light comedy with no artistic aspirations? Does this excuse its makers from striving to create believable scenarios and characters, and from making at least some attempt to add something new? I don't think so, somehow: comedy writers owe the audience as much as any other kind of writer.
I can't remember laughing once during this film – and I'm a man: easily entertained, you know?

i have seen it a couple of time so those people who don't like get over your self OK and it is funny sad and exciting for those people who want a little bit of everything and you have to like some of the characters to really get into it. i like ll cool j in this movie the best all the other movies were OK but this one was the best of all. i don't see how anyone would not like this movie even though some parts in it are a little rude and disturbing.the girl who plays Eva is a good actor and knows how to play actor well. i didn't very much like her in bring it on i like this movie the best .i hope those who hasn't seen this movie likes it a lot.

Deliver us from death by cheese. I tried not to take it seriously, I really really tried to laugh at LL Cool J, and I really really really tried to take a moral message from it, but my brain just wouldnt let me. The first 30 minutes or so were pretty funny but as soon as LL Cool J turned on the charm it was like a living hell. I'm sorry, I cant continue writing.........I need the toilet.
