How Columbo's Mysterious First Name Spurred A $300 Million Lawsuit
Image
Lieutenant Columbo (Peter Falk) had many mysteries throughout his long-running TV series. For one, he made frequent allusions to "The Missus," his wife, an off-screen character whom the detective claimed to make certain demands of him as a husband. He never referred to his wife by her name, though, and he didn't wear a wedding ring. This led some "Columbo" fans to assume that she was a fabrication that Columbo had invented to appear more personable. The assumption, however, was laid to rest when other characters reported talking to Mrs. Columbo. She was real. Indeed, Kate Mulgrew played Mrs. Columbo in a short-lived spinoff series called "Mrs. Columbo." That series, however, tried to cut its ties with "Columbo," leaving its canon status in doubt.

Another one of Columbo's mysteries was his first name. He only ever introduced himself by his last name as, as a cop, so did everyone else.

Maggie Rose Cements Her Country-Soul Reinvention on ‘No One Gets Out Alive’
Image
Nashville was once famously called a ‘ten year town,’ because that’s about how long an artist has to make it there. Maggie Rose has been at it longer than that. Along the way, she struggled to break through in mainstream country music by submitting herself to the machine: playing CMA Fest in the midday summer sun, visiting countless radio stations, and releasing country singles that went nowhere.

Finally, she had enough. In 2018, with her aptly titled LP Change the Whole Thing, Rose threw up her hands and began making...

SAG Awards nominee profile: ‘West Side Story’s’ Ariana DeBose hopes to dance her way to victory on maiden bid
Image
Ariana DeBose is one of the biggest breakout stars of this awards season thanks to her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” The actress has scored nominations left and right for the musical, and she’s hoping that the Screen Actors Guild Awards will mark her first televised victory.

DeBose is a first-time SAG Award nominee. After working in the theater world for years, she piqued audiences’ interests when she was featured as “The Bullet” in the Broadway sensation “Hamilton.” She followed up that performance by embodying disco icon Donna Summer in “Summer,” which led to a Tony nomination. Hollywood scooped her up thereafter, and DeBose showed off impressive vocals in “The Prom” before nabbing the coveted role of Anita in this “West Side Story” adaptation.

DeBose has plenty of opportunities in the film to showcase her range of talents. She leads one of the musical’s biggest crowd-pleasers,...

New Dwayne Johnson Superhero Movie Is Headed To Netflix
Netflix have been making some serious inroads into the blockbuster game in recent years, with Michael Bay’s $150 million 6 Underground replicating the action auteur’s typical formula of mixed reviews and huge audiences, while Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction recently debuted on the streaming service to a hugely positive reception. Not ones for resting on their laurels when it comes to creating new content though, Netflix have also appeared to strike up a working relationship with the world’s biggest movie star.

While production is currently on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic, when the industry gets the all-clear to resume shooting, Dwayne Johnson will head back to work on Red Notice, a globe-trotting heist thriller that sees him star alongside fellow A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot in what promises to be Netflix’s biggest original movie yet. Of course, Johnson is already regarded by many as the hardest-working man in the business,...

Netflix Ramps Up Film Slate with Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Eric Andre
Image
It’s been a busy 48 hours for Netflix: The streaming service has acquired the rights to Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s “Ball and Chain” superhero film, Eric Andre’s “Bad Trip” movie and “Legalize Everything” stand-up special, and reportedly acquired the Mark Wahlberg-produced “Our Man From Jersey” in a seven-figure deal.

Deadline reports that the lattermost project, a “blue-collar 007” that will be scripted by David Guggenheim, will be produced by Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, the duo whose recently-released “Spenser Confidential” was viewed by 85 million Netflix subscribers. The duo has been virtually meeting with writers but other details about the project, including a prospective release date, are under wraps.

A Netflix representative declined to comment on Deadline’s Wahlberg/”Our Man From Jersey” report.

As for official Netflix news, the streaming service announced on Thursday that it acquired “Ball and Chain,” which will star Johnson and Blunt and...

Boespflug co-founded Pyramide and was managing director of Warner France.

French producer Francis Boespflug, best known as the co-founder of historic Paris-based production and distribution company Pyramide and the former managing director of Warner France, has died aged of 70.
