One of the best Halloween specials available.

This is one of the best children's Halloween specials you could hope to watch. It is somewhat obscure and often forgotten about but it deserves all the recognition that the famous Christmas specials get. The dead leaves and dark night set the autumn mood while Garfield and Odie go out candy collecting but get into a spooky adventure along the way. I won't spoil the show but it involves a haunted house, classic Halloween fare all around.

There are a few memorable songs, good animation, classic Garfield humor, and a nice spooky Halloween setting. This is a perfect choice to show to children around October, it might even become a yearly tradition.

Halloween is his middle name.

For a Halloween special, "Garfield in Disguise" (or "Garfield's Halloween Adventure") practically has it all: comedy, adventure, peril, and a scary-looking old man who tells of pirate ghosts that return every Halloween. As a Garfield holiday special, it does very well in conveying the spirit of the holiday--better, I think, than either "Garfield's Thanksgiving" or "A Garfield Christmas," which are also good. For Halloween, this means spooky stories and "candy, candy, candy." This special captures the best of the comic strip's humor and combines it with a frightening Halloween experience for Garfield and Odie, who put themselves in jeopardy while they are out trick-or-treating. The moments that could be scary for kids are very well offset with humor to keep things from getting too tense. There are even a few original songs that are pretty good (even catchy) and well-suited to the moments when they occur. Garfield also manages to show a bit of his kinder side in the end, however reluctantly. In my opinion, this is the quintessential Garfield special, and one of the best ever Halloween specials.

Gimme!

Such a wonderful way to ask for candycandycandycandy. Well it's Garfield's way. And candy he certainly gets in this wonderful Halloween Special. It all starts on one cozy Halloween morn with Garfield waking to the sound of the TV. Normally he'd be irate at waking so early but when he learns what day it is he cannot wait to go trickortreating and get his paws on some candycandycandycandy!

He and Odie dress as pirates and go off on an adventure that happens to involve the ghosts of REAL pirates and real buried treasure. In the course of these brilliant 25 minutes we get the typical assortment of great Garfield humor and wonderful songs.

If only the movie were this good.

Spooktacular Halloween

There have been things loved as a child watched much later, and the question "what made me like this when younger?" crops up in my mind. That is not the case at all with Garfield, 'Garfield and Friends' and his special. If anything they are even better now, coming from a young adult but, as pathetic as this sounds, who is a child at heart. Will always like Garfield, he is a very funny and lovable character.

Of the specials, 'Garfield in Disguise', one of the quintessential Halloween specials, is one of my two favourites. The other being 'A Garfield Christmas Special', which there is a marginal preference for. Again not reviewed at the right time for the occasion being depicted but for me there has never been a right time to review anything (sometimes even to watch it). Other than it being so entertaining, inventively spooky and charming, part of 'Garfield in Disguise's' appeal is that Halloween is alongside Christmas one of my favourite times of the year.

So many great merits with 'Garfield in Disguise' and actually cannot think of anything to criticise it for. The animation is still as colourful as remembered with the smooth drawing, far from sparse backgrounds and attention to detail holding up really well. The songs also are extremely catchy

Entertainment value, as to be expected, is non-stop, with more hilarious gags than one can count and the wry and witty writing shines like the brightest of stars. Of the specials, 'Garfield in Disguise' is a strong contender for the funniest. Also always have loved the rousing action and the inventive and sometimes spooky (but never too scary) Halloween touches embedded throughout. At the same time, the charm and heart is also here while not being sentimental.

Garfield is as hilarious and lovable as ever and can never get enough of Odie, who is so cute while the supporting characters are great fun. Voice acting is on point, nobody portrayed Garfield better than Lorenzo Music and the others were not even close.

In conclusion, when it comes to Halloween specials 'Garfield in Disguise' is one of the best and a great showcase of what Garfield is all about. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This was the best Garfield special.

I am a Garfield fan and this is my favorite special with him in it. Garfield and Odie go Trick-Or-Treating and end up on an adventure. It is very amusing and should be enjoyable for anyone to watch, even people who don't like Garfield.

One of the best Halloween cartoons

This one I remember back, way back. It's a well written, well animated, excellently voiced Halloween special. Adults can actually watch it for the plot. It has a wonderful mood to it.

Not like the junk we see today, like the stuff that gets computer cranked out.

Unfortunately it never seems to get back on TV. This and Spongebob's Halloween where he dresses up like the Flying Dutchman and Patrick tries to make him scary are classics.

Im not sure if it might scare very young children, it is just good fun. Some kids just more sensitive to these things. In that case you might want to seek out the book, Garfield's Halloween Adventure (Formerly Titled Garfield in Disguise) and read it to them first.

This is one case where the movie is better then the book.

But the one thing he's not is a scared-y cat!

It's still always a delight to revisit these classic seasonal animated specials that were so much a part of my childhood. In addition to 'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown', watching 'Garfield in Disguise', a.k.a. 'Garfield's Halloween Adventure', remains a tradition. The story has our favourite orange cat rudely awakened by the incredibly annoying Binky the Clown one morning who soon gets Garfield's attention by calling attention to Halloween night. And Garfield of course is not going to pass up the opportunity to go and collect a ton of candy, candy, candy, candy. In their attempt to maximize their candy collection, he and Odie take a boat to an island where a creepy old man spins them a tale of long dead treasure seeking pirates - who inevitably make an appearance. There's a lot of fun packed into these 24 minutes, including the catchy songs sung by the late, great Lorenzo Music, provider of Garfield's voice for so many years, and Lou Rawls. Funny comedy moments include those with Jon, who's only briefly on hand here, who has his pumpkin land on his head when Garfield startles him. Another hilarious sight gag arises when the odds and ends Garfield tosses about land on Odie and the cat gets a look at him. The scenes with the sinister old tale spinner and the ghosts, which could frighten the younger viewers, are fittingly spooky. And, in the end, it's touching the way Odie often looks out for his more selfish companion, and the way Garfield ultimately recognizes this and gives Odie what he's rightfully earned. The comic strip version of the story contains some additional material involving a purloined ring. Overall, 'Garfield in Disguise' is irresistible to this fan of the strip.

A Halloween Tradition

This is an all time classic. It just would not be Halloween without this TV special. Garfield and Odie, set off trick-or treating, but Garfield's greed for candy leaves them on a haunted island with an old pirate house. Great laughs! Great fun!

Garfield and Odie go trick or treating. This is pretty good, but I'm not sure that real ghosts belong in Garfield.

One of the best animated cartoons!

This Garfield short I love! It is a terrific Halloween show and the first time I saw it many years ago I was very surprised about what happened in the old house and it is actually scary!

Lorenzo Music was very good as the fat cat Garfield and he is just hilarious in this one! Thom Huge was good as John and Binky the Clown! If you love the season of Halloween and autumn time then this is the perfect animated feature to watch!

Enjoyable Halloween adenture...

I actually think I have never seen the 1985 animated movie "Garfield In Disguise" before now in 2025. When I stumbled upon it, by random chance, of course I opted to watch it, as I grew up reading the Garfield comic strips.

Writer Jim Davis created an enjoyable storyline. And it was definitely an archetypical Garfield adventure. So you know what you are getting into here, and Jim Davis delivered. I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 24 minutes that the animated movie ran for.

The voice acting is good, and it is (and was) always a blast to have Lorenzo Music voicing Garfield.

The drawing style is good, and again it is classic Garfield, so you get something familiar here. And the animation was nicely done.

My rating of director Phil Roman's 1985 animated movie "Garfield In Disguise" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Enjoyable, bring this back on TV

'Garfield in Disguise' is the Halloween special for Garfield fans. Again, this is another film from my childhood that I have not seen in years, so I'm taking a shot at trying to remember as much as I can. Like all Garfield films, there were plenty of funny scenes and comical dialog from Garfield. The two pets (Garfield and Odie) end up trick-or-treating and getting more than they bargained for in a haunted house. I don't really know what went on from there - the film did remind me a little bit like a Scobby Doo episode, and I suppose that they were trying to go for that.

I remember enjoying this when I was younger, but I cannot remember anything more! I'd recommend it. Why don';t they show these specials anymore during Halloween?

Greatest Halloween Special Ever!!

I remember when I was little I was terrified of the old man and his house. I actually knew where the voice actor for him lived. Honestly when I watch it now I still get some chills from the spooky background design but I then feel protected by Garfield's warm voice. I also really like the music in this movie.

Another Halloween TV Special I love and also my favorite Garfield Holiday Special

This is another Halloween TV special I love, and it's my favorite Garfield holiday special. Garfield's Halloween is also the first Garfield holiday special too.

Well the story starts with Garfield and Odie, dressed as pirates on Halloween night, and went off tricking-or-treating. Then, by a river dock, Garfield spied a rowboat and houses across the river and thought they could row across the river to the houses to get more candy. But the row boat took Garfield and Odie down the river and landed them on an island with an old house on it. Inside the house, they meet a spooky old man who tells them that the house is haunted by pirate ghosts who buried a treasure under the house 100 years ago, vowing to come back for it that very night.

So anyway, I love this Halloween special, and I loved how Lou Rawls sang the "Trick or Treat" song; he's got an awesome singing voice, and the other songs are catchy too.

Ages well

I remember watching this when it came out. Unlike some other cartoons this one is still enjoyable and one I watch with my family every year. It is full of puns, is heart-warming, has a pretty good scare factor and the music is catchy.

Awesome Halloween Special

After Garfield gets a ride awakening from Binky The Clown, but turns him back on when he hears him saying about getting a lot of candy, he decides to do it, even going as far as to take Odie with him, as it would mean two sacks, and two sacks mean more candy. Dressing as pirates, the two go out on the town for sweets, but soon, their night turns spooky as they take a boat across the river, only to end up in a haunted house, where ghost pirates return for a treasure they hid in the house one hundred years ago.

This is a neat special. With a balance of humor and horror, and plenty of songs (some sung by Lorenzo Music himself) Garfield In Disguise (a.k.a. Garfield's Halloween Adventure) is a neat Halloween special for all ages.

One of the best cartoons ever animated

Let me just start by saying that to this very day, I hold this cartoon to be one of the scariest I have ever seen. For months after first seeing it, I would wake up screaming, thinking of that old man. But in addition to being creepy, the show is also very artistically drawn. The storyboard is also solid. I can identify with the never-ending pursuit for candy. I wouldn't row to the other side of the lake for candy, but Garfield and Odie would. Maybe that is why I loved this special so much; It brings back find memories of trick-or-treating. The pursuit of candy far outweighed actually eating the stuff. For whatever the reason, this and the Garfield Christmas Special hold a special place in my heart. PS, I still break out in a cold sweat every time I think about that old man rowing away in the boat and the ghosts coming

Fun show for kids

"Garfield's Halloween Adventure" is a great show for young children to watch any time of the year. It is just the right length in time and the funny dialogue of Garfield is enough to keep children entertained. The story at the start shows Garfield's lack of morals through his desire for Halloween candy, but as the story progresses, so does he.

Since this is a somewhat old children's show (this show was made in 1985), one or two random parts may be viewed as too scary, but it's all part of the fun. I personally first saw this show over twelve years ago, but I can watch it over and over again even today, without fast forwarding any of it, which is hard to say for anything I watch multiple times. Overall, this is a great show and I recommend it to everyone who loves Garfield, Halloween or candy.

Gar Halloween field fun

One of my absolute favorite holiday specials. This is Garfield at his prime time best with music and songs, plot, jokes and general good natured sarcasm. The whole episode is quotable and you will find yourself singing the songs, I even find myself singing the song "What should I be" every Halloween or if I am making up a character in a video game. I also has some spookiness to it which every Halloween special should have , even if for kids. The voice actors do very well in their parts from Garfield and the gang to Binky and the old man (ooh shudder). If you've put off watching this episode for some reason, quit being a "scaredy cat" and go and watch this. Recommended for Garfield fans of all ages.

Wouldn't it be sweet just to trick or treat? Um, yeah!

This has to be one of my favorite TV specials of all time.

And no wonder. It has Garfield, the world's greatest cat, in a story about Halloween-- the best and most fascinating holiday the world has to offer. In this story, he and Odie go trick-or-treating at the wrong door... on the eve of a supernatural visitation from vengeful pirates! The songs are great, and I can't pick favorites because they're all equally phenomenal. The humor is still there, and the crew balances it well with the eeriness.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the one that should be shown every October on every network in the known universe. It's not Halloween if you haven't watched "Garfield in Disguise," also 'disguised' as "Garfield's Halloween Adventure." A seasonal must and a classic for all time.
