The message "For Sasha" appears just before the end credits. This refers to Sasha Cassavetes, daughter of director Nick Cassavetes.

A film very much close to director Nick Cassavetes' heart as his own daughter Sasha was born with a congenital heart defect. His later film Beim Leben meiner Schwester (2009) was also made to chart her medical experiences.

The movie was shot in a group of provincial government buildings in Toronto, Ontario. Adjacent to filming, is a hospital. On at least one occasion, filming blocked off access to the emergency room of the real hospital.

On August 11, 2022, Actress Anne Heche was not expected to survive an anoxic brain injury she had sustained in a motor vehicle collision, but she was being kept on life support to determine if her organs were viable for donation, in accordance with her expressed wish to be an organ donor. Heche was declared brain dead a few hours later, but remained on life support to assess organ donor viability and locate recipients. On August 14, it was announced that organ recipients had been found and that her body would undergo the organ donation procedure that day. To honor her organ donation, hospital staff held an honor walk for Heche.
