Like Stephan-fish, I enjoyed the film very much, although I think there is a little too much slapping toward the end. But I am not sure it shows scenes of the poor Czech country after the revolution, unless the revolution meant is the one that took place in February 1948. The film was shot in the summer of 1988 (you can even see a calendar in the cooperative's office) and the velvet revolution took place in November 1989. The jokes about the communist regime are rather innocent, or very subtle. I would say the story takes place in a country which did not really exist. The important part taken by the village parson is surprising, although of course religion is shown, as befitted the regime, as a matter for old people.
Czech films are incredibly unknown outside Czech Republic. I have been lucky to have seen several classics. I found the comedies particularly hilarious, quite different to British humor yet equally effective. The main actor is particularly expressive, with her quick reactions and energetic persona.
It's quite amazing that everything was filmed in a very small house, apparently. I cannot wait to visit the place if I go again to Czech Republic. These films are all masterpieces and the public needs to enjoy again good acting, no special effects, real people, real settings, simple photography and a great story.

I have seen this film many times and i always enjoy it. Jokes about old regime and scenes from poor Czech country after the revolution make this film on of the really classical films in our country. Not everybody liked it, but I do.
