The finish to the Justice-Hogan match actually did not occur as planned. The original plan was for Hulk Hogan to hit the leg drop on Justice and for Papa Shango to do a run in and break up the pin causing a disqualification. However, Papa Shango missed his cue and was late in getting down to the ring. Justice improvised by kicking out of the leg drop. From there, referee Earl Hebner would disqualify Justice when his manager, Harvey Wippleman, interfered.
It was widely rumored that the main event of this show was scheduled to be Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan in a WWF Title "dream match" which had been built up for months. Supposedly, the plan was changed when news broke of Hogan's departure in the wake of the steroid scandal of 1991, or perhaps because of an unwillingness on Hogan's part to lose to Flair. A Flair-Hogan main event was initially announced on WWF television, but only by way of planting the seeds for Sid Justice's heel turn which led to the eventual Hogan-Justice main event.
The WWF title and Intercontinental title matches also share something that was highly taboo in the WWF at the time: the appearance of blood in the contest. According to Bret Hart's biography, "Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling", Bret was able to convince the backstage crew that he had been accidentally "busted open", but Ric Flair was unfortunately caught blading directly on camera and was fined several thousand dollars.
WrestleMania VIII marked the last WrestleMania TV broadcast that legendary commentator Gorilla Monsoon ever called. He commentated other WWF pay-per-views periodically, but never another WrestleMania. Monsoon would return ringside to commentate for the Radio WWF/Armed Forces Network simulcast at WrestleMania X.
Shawn Michaels was originally booked to face former tag-team partner Marty Jannetty, but Jannetty left the WWF before the event, after he attacked a police officer, and was placed under house arrest for six months.
