When a great white shark, captured for the Water World Park Exhibition in Cape Town, South Africa, escapes, marine biologist Nick Harris (Thorsten Kaye) and SCUBA diver Samantha Peterson (Nikita Ager), whose sister was eaten by the shark, set out to find and kill it. In their search, they discover a pack of five more mutant great whites living in a cave near the beach where the Water World's surfing competition is about to be held, so Nick and Samantha team up with egoistic Discovery Channel shark hunter Roy Bishop (Dan Metcalfe) to kill the sharks.

Shark Attack 2 is a direct-to-video film based on a screenplay by Scott Devine and William Hooke. It is the second movie in the Shark Attack series, preceded by Shark Attack (1999) (1999) and followed by Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002) (2002) and Shark Zone - Tod aus der Tiefe (2003) (2003).

Cast and setting are different. The thing that links the two storylines is the sharks, who are described as being the offspring of Dr Miles Craven's (Bentley Mitchum) mutant sharks, as introduced in the first movie.

Sam leaves the shark tank to help Nick and Roy stuck in the downed minisub with the time ticking on the explosives. With just 5½ minutes to spare, Nick and Roy right the sub. Because of the damaged rudder, Roy turns on the generator and pilots the sub and explosives into the shark cave. The sharks follow him, attacking the sub. With less than three minutes to spare, one shark grabs him by the arm. Meanwhile, outside the cave, Nick and Sam fight their way through the attacking sharks with only a speargun and the Glock, making it to the surface with less than 20 seconds. As they climb aboard the Down Under, the explosives go off. Bemoaning Roy's death, they are surprised when he suddenly surfaces, his arm bloodied but otherwise okay. Roy explains how he found a small tunnel at the back of the cave, dumped all his gear, and squeezed his way out. In the final scene, Nick and Sam head for home.
