Despite the natural chemistry of Andrew Shim and Ben Marshall the two actors almost came to blows during a scene due to Marshall's obnoxious behavior. Paddy Considine admitted in the DVD commentary he had no problem filming the scene at the seaside where he threatens Marshall's character, saying he "couldn't wait to get his hands on the little shit."

The relationship between Romeo and 'Knocks' is semi-autobiographical and based on the childhood relationship between Shane Meadows and co-writer Paul Fraser. Fraser began to enter writing competitions (and practice magic) when he was left bedridden for an extended period by a spinal injury. Meadows was later banned from seeing Fraser after shooting him in the stomach with an air rifle.

Paddy Considine's acting debut

In a Q&A Screening to mark the 25th Anniversary of the film. Vicky McClure said that Meadows had asked the cast to go shopping with the idea "buy something your character would wear", McClure being young bought an Adidas Tracksuit Jacket, which is something she then admitted wouldn't something her character Ladine would wear. Considine and Shim went to an Army supply store. Considered character Morell is seen often in the film wearing Camo army trousers from this visit. Ladene Hall said she bought clothes and wore some chosen in the film.

Shane Meadows: Director appears twice in the film, once working in the chip shop and later working as a nurse. At the end of the movie these parts are credited to Shane Meadows and Shaun Fields respectively. Shaun Fields is also the name of the young boy in This is England (2006), whose experiences are based on those of director Meadows.
