I thought the graphics in this one and the overall story and feel for the game were better than the first game as that game had an arcade game look and feel to it while this one to me was in depth. Granted the ending to this one was a bit of a cop out it still provided me a lot of entertainment. The game has Mario and gang in the land of dreams to fight some strange villain that would never be seen again, or at least I do not think he ever appeared in any of the other Mario games. In this one you get to choose your character to tackle each level the players: Toad-the little dude who you constantly rescued in the first game. one of Princess' retainers. strengths-super strong can pull things out of the ground and dig super quickly. weakness-can not jump worth a flip.
Luigi-Mario's green clad brother. was in the first game when you played with two people. strengths-has a great vertical jump. weakness-not as strong as Mario or Toad.
Princess Toadstool-the princess that causes you headache after headache in the rest of the series, later becomes a Peach. strengths-when jumping has the ability to stay afloat in the air of a bit. weakness-not the highest jumper and she is the weakest character.
Mario-the hero of game most of the time. strength and weakness- really none of either, kind of an average joe.
Yes, this game progresses through levels, no fireballs in this one, you perform your attack by picking enemies or objects up and hurling them at other enemies. You fight an impressive array of villains in this one and you go through many landscapes including rather fun digging scenes in the desert. Not all is perfect though as the game sure could have used some swimming levels like in the first game. Still, for the most part I enjoyed this Mario adventure quite a lot.

Super Mario 2 is unlike any other Mario Game. You get the option to play as Mario, Toad, Luigi, or Princess Toadstool. You then embark on a magical journey.
The gameplay is interesting and unique, but in a good way. Like how you pick up vegatables and throw them at enemies. Or how you can pick up enemies and throw them. I think this game is quite satisfying in how you can fight your enemies. Also I like how you can pick up coins and play the slot machine game at the end of levels.
Another interesting aspect is how you have to fight Birdo at the end of every level. Birdo, purple egg shooting dinosaur, is quite an interesting character. It is neat how you have to fight her(or him) at the end of each level. The bosses at the end of each world are all unique and also it is somewhat unusual how this game has no Bowser in it.
Strategy comes into play a little. Each character has their own strengths. Toad is the strongest, Luigi can jump really high, Toadstool can float for a while, and Mario is well balanced. So you have to decide on who to use and why you want to use them.
So this game is different from other Mario games, a little unusual but in a good way. I recommend it.

The American SMB 2 is without a doubt the least popular Mario game, probably because the game-play is so different. The Japanese SMB 2 was not released in America because Nintendo was afraid it wouldn't sell well due to its high difficulty level and strong similarities to SMB 1. It was finally released in America as "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" as a part of the Super Mario All Stars game for Super Nintendo.
I'm in the minority but I like this Mario 2 better than the lost levels. I will admit it's disappointing not to have fire power, but all in all I think it's loads of fun. In my opinion, it's quite refreshing to play a Mario game that's so different. You don't have to save Princess Toadstool from Bowser, and you can actually play as Toad or the Princess instead of Mario or Luigi. All characters have their strengths and weaknesses. Mario is the most balanced character, with decent strength and jumping ability. The Princess is the weakest physically, so it takes her the longest to lift objects. However, she has the ability to fly for a few seconds at a time, which can really come in handy. Toad is the strongest, but he can't jump very high. Luigi is the best jumper, but he's not as strong as Mario or Toad.
This time, you have to save the people of Sub Con who have been imprisoned by the evil King Wart. Other bosses include Mouser (a rat who throws bombs), a three-headed snake, a crab that throws rocks, and fryguy, a ball of flame that spits fire. I would really like to see another Mario Bros. game with these characters in the future, but it seems unlikely because Bowser and the usual bad guys are so much more popular. The only bad guys from this game that crossed over into other Mario games are Shy Guys and the bo-bombs.
Is this the best Mario Bros. game? No. But it's certainly worth playing.

I am a huge fan of the Super Mario Bros games and they have release many classic games however this sequel is sadly not as strong as the first game.
But what Super Mario Bros 2 does differently is this time you are allow to pick four different characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad to get through each level.
It allows for more interesting game play as each character has their own special power for the game.
That being said the game does have have it known issues.
Like the first game it does have it challenges but this one takes the cake.
The graphics do look very good don't get me wrong plus they bright up the background designs as well as well as the characters are more detail.
The sound is good as well as boss music for each boss. The Controls are the same as before.
But the the game suffers from the fact that some times you get stuck and get lost while there is no time limit it does get on your nerves when you have to back track a lot and your enemies come back. Also there are hardly any power up only one to create a new door or to destroy enemies it just seems they took away what made the first game so fun for something else.
It just really took away what made the games fun.
Overall if you're a fan of the series then you should check it out
I give Super Mario Bros. 2 an 7 out of 10

It wasn't a bad game, but considering I was expecting your typical Mario game and got this, I was a little disappointed. It's not anything like past or future Mario games. Not trying to attack it or anything, but I was expecting better for a Mario game. The good side of this game is that you don't have to be a Mario fan to enjoy it because it barely even resembles a Mario game. I enjoyed it, but I would've liked your typical Mario game more.
I commented on the other Super Mario Bros. 2 from 1986. That was the japanese version. This one released in 1988 is the game sequel released in the US and across the world. For reasons I don't have any knowledge of, the gameplay in this game is quite different from the other Mario games.
This game takes Mario, Luigi, Toad and the Princess into Subcon. A world of dreams that is under Wart's control. They must liberate it by travelling through 20 areas across 7 dangerous worlds.
This was the least good of the Super Mario series. I can't say it's bad, because I like playing it. This is the second toughest Mario game, behind only the japanese Super Mario Bros. 2. However, I managed to beat it too. Good game. Even with the different gameplay. The idea of throwing plants into bad guys is very good. There were many different bosses in this game: Tryclyde, Fryguy, Clawgrip, Ostro, Mouser and Wart himself.
I couldn't believe it when I finished it. Worth playing, even if all the other Mario games are far superior than this one. Good job Nintendo.

The second game in the Super Mario Bros franchise is indeed good, however, it still doesn't reach the feet of the original game. Here we have an expansion of the universe that was presented to us in Super Mario Bros (1985) and this is a very high point of the game, but overall it is a little below. There is no villain that is as striking as Bowser in this game and that ends up making the story a little irrelevant. The settings are really cool and beautiful, but I still prefer the ones from the first game. Something that is very good is the insertion of new playable characters with emphasis on Luigi who would become one of the most important characters in the entire franchise. It's a harder game and has some levels that are even cooler than the original. Inferior as it may be, this second game has a very high quality.

Mario bros 2 is pretty much the same thing as the first Mario bros game which you would probably expect but the game has quite a bit of cons. First of all the game is VERY short that it only took me one day to beat literally, and the game is so easy that if you about 5 times it will give a power up which will make you not able to die and the game and very annoying controls in my opinion. The pros about the game is that the game offers Co-op and a coin rush mode and the game-play in the game feels fast past and smooth. but the game is 39$ and its not worth buying for that much, the game feels just like an expansion pack to the first game! It would be best to buy the game until the game gets a price drop and if you are thinking about buying the game now just buy a used copy of the game.

This wasn't anything like 1 or 3 or the others was it? It was a completely new Mario Brothers and we still played the heck out of it.
It was harder, it had stranger characters that could or couldn't do things, so you were stuck playing Luigi or Peach exclusively, but it was still a super fun game that looked utterly amazing for the time.

I really love this game a lot I always did, the music, the visuals, and of course the gameplay always gives me a big warm nostalgic feeling inside like few other games from my childhood still can, it's not particularly a hard game at all, nor is it too easy, but just a tremendously fun breeze to play through. The version I prefer is the graphically superior port that was included with the Super Mario Allstars compilation, but it's the same basic game, and as a kid I never even knew it wasn't the 'real' Super Mario Bros 2, but what does that really matter anyway? To me it looked like a Mario game, it felt like one, maybe a Mario game that was vastly different to the original, which I did notice but I never really wondered why because it didn't matter and still doesn't because this game is great! "The Lost Levels" my be far more challenging but it certainly wasn't anywhere near as fun. I always had a blast with it as a kid playing for hours on end, I loved the strange vaguely Arabian aesthetic and vegetable motif, and the uprooting objects to hurl at your freaky enemies to beat them aspect was such a novel and completely different way than jumping on their heads, you could ride on the enemy's heads in this game! There were so many endearing little touches, like the scary enraged sun that will hunt you down like a dog unless you drop his key, how all the bosses were so weird and unique to the game, like a giant crab, a bomb tossing rat with shades, and the last boss was a big toad king who you defeat by throwing terrible vegetables down his gullet until he croaks! And done to death as the old twist was, I found the "And-it-was-all-a-dream" reveal at the end to be really sweet and somehow fitting here, Mario even saves the day in his dreams... I never played as Mario though, I always played as the princess, as her ability to float came in very handy! It was cool how the four characters weren't merely sprite swaps but actually did all have their strengths and weaknesses. It's all decidedly quite odd to be sure, like the Alice in Wonderland of Mario games, but it somehow worked! Whether you considered it a real Mario adventure or not, what remained true was that at its heart it's just a fun classic video game. X

Mario 2 is one of the most fascinating entries in the Mario franchise-not because it follows the formula, but because it boldly breaks it. From the moment Mario and friends step through that mysterious door into Sub-Con, you know you're in for something surreal. The gameplay mechanics-like picking up and throwing enemies, vertical scrolling, and character-specific abilities-feel like a dream compared to the grounded platforming of its predecessor.
The visuals are vibrant, the music is catchy, and Wart makes for a memorably odd villain. But what really stands out is the atmosphere: it's whimsical, unpredictable, and strangely hypnotic. It's not your typical Mario game, and that's both its charm and its limitation. While I admire the creativity, the departure from familiar Mario elements might leave some fans feeling slightly disconnected.
Still, it's a bold experiment that deserves recognition. It may not be the definitive Mario experience, but it's a magical side quest worth taking.

As I'm sure we all know, the first "Super Mario Bros" from 1985 was not only an amazing game, but a shift in video game culture as a whole, as that was pretty much cemented forever by that game. So much so, Nintendo decided to make a sequel to it; though only for Japan (until about a decade later). What is now known as "The Lost Levels", that original sequel, despite still being good, was very little more than a tough as nails level expansion to the original game; with the only big improvement being a few of the visuals, but even those were minor. Though, 2 years after that, in the US (where I'm from), we were greeted with this. A completely different game altogether. One that, as many know, is mostly a reskin of another Famicom only game, "Doki Doki Panic". An odd decision, sure, but was it the right one?
Absolutely. In fact, I'd argue that this game is, in some ways, better than the first game. Now, you could read that and say "but if it's just a reskin, how could it be that good?" Well, it's because this game, despite having different mechanics in place, still feels like a classic Mario game. That's because, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, this game was actually designed with Mario in mind. But, because of the event that it was originally based off of, Fuji TV would sponsor Nintendo to make it based off of that instead of making it a Mario game. Thankfully, as time went on, we'd have both at the end of the day, with this one being the definitive way to play it.
This is also where you get to play as one of four characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad; and it's not just cosmetic. Mario is the most balanced, Luigi jumps higher and is a touch more slippery, Peach is able to glide for a few seconds, and Toad runs very fast. Everybody is fun to play as, and this adds a lot of replayabilty to an already excellent game. One which concept is awesome and well executed, all with visuals that are much more colorful and full of life than ever before, as well as some even more forever memorable music. By all accounts, this game really is something special.
One reason why this game is so special is how it's played. Instead of jumping on enemies, you throw them (and objects), and while that may sound odd, it not only fits, but is also immensely satisfying. Mix that with the added super jump and the otherwise usual move set, and what you've got here is a game with consistently well designed and creative levels, as they rely more on the aforementioned fun mechanics unique to this game instead of the usual power ups we're used to (though invincibility stars and super mushrooms are present here).
Another reason for this game being special are the characters. The likes of Bob-ombs, Shy Guys, Pokeys, and Ninjis are all forever classic Mario foes, and they all not only fit the Mario universe perfectly (as time would prove), but also make their debut here. No Bowser or the usual villains here, but instead, we get the likes of Wart, Mouser, Fryguy, Birdo, Clawgrip, and Tryclyde; with Birdo seemingly being the only one of the bunch to have been in more Mario games than this, though usually in spin offs. I almost wish we'd see more of these characters, because their designs and boss battles are charming and memorable. I can kind of see why that hasn't happened thanks to what the context behind this game is, but still.
Really, there's nothing about this game I dislike. Is it a bit different compared to most other Mario games? Sure. But it manages to do what it sets out to do near perfectly, and despite it not starting existence as a Mario game, its fun gameplay and characters makes it fit in perfectly with the series, and is, in my eyes, the best 2nd game the plumber has ever been in on the NES/Famicom. This is one of my favorite games on the console, and I recommend anyone check it out if they haven't yet. While I can't personally choose which one mine is (since all 3 of the mainline games on the NES are so great), I can definitely see why this one is Shigeru Miyamoto's, as it really is excellent, and is one of the most underrated of the entire series.

The reason why this gameplay is so different from all the other Mario games is that it never was meant to be a Mario game. They didn't ship the Japanese version of SMB2 into the United States because people complained that it was too hard. Eventually they decided release a sequel in the United States but did it in a very cheap fashion. They took a totally different game that never was released in the US and altered the appearances of the characters and some of the objects so they could release it as a Super Mario game.
The game that was turned into SMB2 in the US was actually about a family who stepped into the world of a strange book to find the two missing younger children.

Rated E Super Mario Bros 1 is a classic NES game.It was great for its time and it dates very well. Its still fun to play today.Super Mario Bros 3 is also a great Super Mario Bros game.Super Mario Bros 2 however is disappointing. There was a different Super Mario Bros 2 released in Japan. However it was exactly the same as the first and was much much harder. So the US distributor did not want to release it.So they took a different game, changed the characters to Mario characters and voilà you got Super Mario Bros 2 the US version. The Japanese version was re-released in 1993 for SNES as Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels for the game Super Mario All Stars.Anyway Super Mario Bros 2 lets you play as four different characters.Mario,Luigi,Princess or Toad. Each character has a special ability.Instead of just jumping on an enemy, you have to jump on them, pick them up and throw them to kill them.Super Mario Bros 2 is an interesting game that's worth playing but not as good as the first three.

Second Run Around for the Mario's
This is another one of my favorite games for the NES and video games of all time. It's true this is an unusual entry as it's rather different from its previous entry and many more afterward that followed. There is a story as to why they chose for this to be the secondary entry but that's for another time and another review. You must realize this game came out at a time before sequels to video games, movies and just about anything else had no specific rules, whenever there was that next entry, you had the freedom to simply go any direction you wanted with it. Yeah, the direction they went with this entry was different but personally I felt the right direction, also despite the differences the elements from the old game were still intact, it goes with the old saying the more things change the more they stay the same.
There is a lot I love about the game, I really like the locations you're in that mainly have to do with a hot climate, from tropical to desert locations. This contributes to the Arabian adventure feel which is cool as I really like Arabian fantasies/mythology. It also really adds more to the fantasy world of the Mushroom Kingdom showing how much vaster it is and even after all these years there is still so much to see and explore.
The gameplay is solid as you still go from point A to B, but this time it's not just a simple straight shot because as you go forward you might also have to go different directions at some point to get to B. This made the levels even more interesting than before because it gave them some depth. Like certain secrets and bonus areas, but also the levels and challenge had more variety and a slight unpredictability as you went along where when you pass one section you go to another but it's not like the previous challenge. This will make you have to do some quick adjustments before you can pass.
I really like that this time before and after each level, you get to pick as one of the four characters in the group, each have their strengths and weaknesses. This gives the game a bit of a strategy element where you choice which character works best for you on which levels. It's the bunch we know and love which mainly consist of Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool (or Daisy as recently known), and Toad. I like to play as Mario as he's the most balanced of the bunch but also like playing as Luigi as he has a slightly higher jump, has a good offence but his defense is weak as his anaerobic strength isn't on the same level as Mario's.
Your method of attack is unique and more plausible as this time you don't jump and land on heads but you just pull out and up whatever is laying around you. From medium to giant turnups (man who'd of thought turnups could be deadly weapons), mushroom shaped platforms and others. This function isn't just for attack but is a useful tool in helping to uncover and carry items like keys, or even to place platform where you need them. One other think I like is to ride and control a magic carpet which I thought was cool, I really like those stages where your get to man something and be in constant motion, this only happens a little bit in the game but it's still worth it.
Even like the colorful variety of enemy, which consist of Shy Guys who are you could say like the Jawas from "Star Wars" only they have these masks on which make them both cute and slightly creepy at the same time. Some of them are different like one Shy Guy who has a Gas Mask that can shoot bullets at you with it's nozzle, how the heck it can do that is anyone guess. There are snakes, bugs, black starfish mutant creatures, other mutants and other things all trying to kill you.
The boss battles are solid their really timing games by their nature and each of them are different in some form, like the battles against the subordinate villain Mouser whom has sunglasses which makes sense as he's the most devious and tricky one, he's armed with bombs. And the final main head honcho boss King Wart who is this giant frog whom kind of looks like Jabba the Hutt from "Star Wars" which makes sense, he's even more tricky to beat so be careful.
I even like the music score, which is memorable, I really like there are even more music tracks than in the first game. The music has a different feel because it has that upbeat zippy adventure feel but at the same time a bit of a relaxed beat at the same time, where it feels your on an interesting adventure but also can afford to relax a bit.
Even like the boss battle music which has that dreaded suspenseful feel of it, where it's no time to screw around but to get down to business and nail the big bad boss before he nails you.
The Mario Bros are still super second run around.
Rating: 4 stars.
