The film was originally intended as a sequel to Bloody Pompoms (1988) (which also starred Betsy Russell). After Prism Studios bowed out of the original production, Paramax took over. The story was then tweaked and the title changed to Millennium Countdown.
Director Fred Olen Ray did an uncredited reshoot involving the opening scene set at the sorority house due the film's distributor wanting more nudity.
The cover art closely resembled that of the unrelated film, Ruggero Deodato's Body Count - Die Mathematik des Schreckens (1986).
