Synopsis

  • One afternoon afternoon a group of teenage girls sit outside the flat of a rock group called Opal Butterfly waiting for them to come out. They come out and drive off in their van, and the girls chase after them. One of the girls named Sally attends their gig that night with her friends. She swipes their tour itinerary and gets some money, and tells her shocked friends to tell her family she's not coming home. She's bored with life in her small city, and plans on going on the road with the band. She stows away in their van after the gig and persuades them to let her go with them and assures them she's of legal age. They return to their studio and the lead singer seduces her in the van while the others go in to drop off their instruments. She stays with them overnight at their pad,and the next morning they're already using her as a glorified cook and maid. They want to sleep in but their manager barges in and demands to see their set list for the studio and reminds them they have to be in the studio to record today. They go to the studio and lay down some tracks and then run around the city frolicking with Sally. They return to the band's pad and while the guys are out, musician Bob's girl Suzy comes in.Sally does not recognize her and accuses her of stealing. They get into a fight, and a guitar is broken and when the others return and break up the fight,Sally is blamed and thrown out but she insists on briefly coming back to get her bag. Next Sally hooks up with a band called English Rose at one of their gigs. They go to a party at an effeminate older man named Alfred's house. Sally likes singer Steve and so does fellow groupie Patricia. At Alfred's party they meet fellow odd types including a dancing groupie stripping,a horny groupie, and a horny older woman. Alfred devises a party game in which each person takes one of a set of animal cards and everyone has to make animal noises until the two people who have the matching sets of cards are mated with each other. The band is a little bored with the scene but they go along with it anyway. An equally effeminate monocled older gentleman gets a joint. The game turns into an orgy and Sally hooks up with Steve. The next day the band is back on the road. They stop at a gas station and one girl nearly gets left as they drive off. They show up at a hotel where they have reservations but the clerk will not let the girls in and won't take bribes. Some of the girls are snuck in but one girl gets caught and thrown out. Sally and the other two girls end up hiding under the beds in Steve's room. Sally wanted to be alone with him but he insists on either making it an orgy or she can leave. She stays. The next day the band is back on the road and musician Ray is upset that Steve got all the girls. They mock musician Bruce's lucky hat which he claims saved his life when an angry father struck it.Callous Steve looks on and refuses to help as two other musicians decide to have their way with Sally right there in the van. The girl screams and struggles. Another van drives by with another band called The Virgin Stigma.Sally is half-jokingly offered to them, but they don't seem too interested. The two vans swipe each other.Sally is hurled out the passenger side window toward the other van. The terrified girl is caught between the two fans until she is finally pulled into The Virgin Stigma's van. English Rose's van accidentally collides with a lumber truck pulled over on the side of the road so the driver could change a flat.Steve is killed and some of the English Rose are injured and so is the driver of a lumber truck. The Virgin Stigma get out of there quick with Sally in their van.On the TV news it is announced that the truck driver doesn't really know what happened. At The Virgin Stigma's pad, their cigar chomping manager Murray enters and chides them for getting themselves into this, and for hysterical Sally being there. Musician Wes consoles her in the bedroom. Sally starts accusing them of getting The English Rose killed.Murray tells them to keep the girl happy and give her what she wants and keep her off the scene. They decide to take Sally to their mansion in the woods with other groupies. At the house one of the groupies puts hash in the cake she's making. One musician and one groupie in the living room play Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf. The police raid the mansion with a search warrant. In the kitchen the other girl tell Sally to eat the hash. One musician is found upstairs in bed with a girl. They are brought downstairs and the girl is told to cover herself. The head detective questions them about speed limits and drugs. When they accuse him of planning to plant stuff he says he doesn't need to.There's plenty of residue on the carpet and in the ashtrays. In the kitchen Sally is tearful and scared they'll all be arrested. The other girl tells her to calm down.In the living room the detective claims the surviving members of English Rose gave them up and he wants to know where Sally is. As they creep out of the kitchen Sally is so high she stumbles down the steps into the cellar. Back in the living room detective says he may take them all downtown, partly because of the sardonic manner of some of the musicians. The groupie who cooked the hash enters and offers everyone tea and cake. The detective tells her to sit. Finally, the detective has everyone taken to the police station except Sally who is forgotten and unseen in the cellar and Wes,who is upstairs unseen with his guitar. When everyone is gone,Sally hears Wes upstairs playing and singing. She gets to her feet and follows the music upstairs and finds him in a bedroom playing and singing "She Believed In Love" He says her hands are cold and to warm herself by the fire. She says she was afraid, but she feels peaceful now. He says it's because he sent her good vibes which is where it's at. Wes calls Murray and Murray says he got the band out on bail, but tells him to keep Sally there until after the hearing on Wednesday so they'll be safe. Wes assures him she's a cool chick. The next morning Wes bring Sally tea and breakfast in bed. They walk around the grounds. Wes says one day he'd like to get a peaceful house in the mountains so he could write songs and turn other people on to peace. Sally wishes she could do something creative. He says she can if she really wants to but she says all she can do is work in an office and that's a drag. He says being a groupie isn't much of a life. She says she's confused and he says it's because she's been used and thrown away when she was no longer needed. That night they sit by the fire and meditate. They clasp their hands and raise their arms to touch minds. They kiss. The following Wednesday Murray returns with the band after the hearing and says if Sally's been bothering Wes he'll take care of her. He goes in the kitchen and tells her the guys are going to get suspended sentences. She explains the hash made her fall into the cellar. He says she's lucky, and the boys haven't been mentioned in the paper. He says it's his game not Wes'. He gets a little rough with her,and she tells him not to touch her again or she'll let everyone know what really happened in the crash! He chastises her for threatening him and says he'll see her later. When they go in the living room he tells the guys they should write a song about a blackmailing groupie. He tells Sally the verdict came in that it was an accidental death and nobody cares what she says or does. He gets a little threatening but Wes won't come to her rescue.Murray says Wes knows where it's at. He closes in on Sally and she screams. Later, we see Sally leaving the house with her bag, apparently having been either threatened or raped,or both. She walks down the road.Wes drives up and offers her some money. She slowly takes the money. He drives back to the mansion and she continues walking off down the road, and the film ends.
