Taxi driver Tom's life is changed forever one dark rainy night when he encounters a distraught young woman who gets into his cab and asks him to "take me home." Tom is newly employed on the job after been made redundant from his old job after many years and is unaware of the area, but soon discovers she lives in one of the new housing developments, a yuppie with a young husband, Martin. But it's clear that Kathy is deeply unhappy in her marriage, and things are made worse when Martin pressurizes her into having an abortion so as not to damage their upwardly mobile lifestyle. And when Kathy unexpectedly ends up being driven by Tom again in his taxi, she confesses her troubles to him and reawakens Tom's own dissatisfaction with his life and marriage, and soon the two begin an affair.

Tom and Kathy embark on an affair, but Tom feels self conscious about the age difference and his working class origins compared to the more expensive lifestyle of Kathy. His wife Liz is unaware of the affair, but becomes concerned by Tom's late nights at work and his sudden distant behaviour towards her. She is also disturbed by her friend Joyce's revelation that she is having an affair with the catering manager where they work together. As Tom and Kathy's affair continues, Tom becomes obsessed by her, but his desperation to see her when her husband Martin organizes a work's dinner at her home threatens to blow the affair wide open in public.

All hell breaks loose after Kathy and Tom are spotted together by one of Martin's work colleagues, who wastes no time in telling Martin. Tom himself is wracked with guilt and confesses to his wife Liz about the affair, and the fall out from the revelation and Martin's attempts to get revenge on the pair threatens to destroy both their marriages. As Tom sinks into drink, Liz's own actions threaten her friend's marriage. And as Kathy ponders what now in her life, she desperately tries to find Tom to find out where do they go from here.
