Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee disapproved of the bouffant and told the actress that it didn't go with her character. He gave in when she insisted on keeping it. Later, however, Tagore regretted her appearance in the song and wished that she had listened to the director. [

Hrishikesh Mukherjee used the real-life story of his cousin for the complex father-daughter relationship enacted by Tarun Bose and Sharmila Tagore in the film. Scandalised by Sharmila Tagore's bikini cover in a magazine, some people had advised Mukherjee to cast Nutan instead of her. The director stuck with Sharmila since she had the expressive eyes he wanted in the film's titular character. However, Bose wasn't Mukherjee's first choice. The filmmaker had cast him in the father's role only after Ashok Kumar and Abhi Bhattacharya had turned it down.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee dedicated the film to his mentor Bimal Roy, who passed away earlier that year. The dedication simply read "Dedicated to Bimal Da" and appeared after the director's credit.

Kaifi Azmi adapted Sahir Ludhianvi's lines "Abhi saanson ki khushboo hawaon mein hai / Abhi qadmon ki aahat fazaaon mein hai" in the song "Aankh Khulte Hi Tum" ("Munimji", 1955) to write "Uske daaman ki khushboo hawaon mein hai / Uske qadmon ki aahat fazaaon mein hai" for the first antara of this song.
