Since it was launched in its current form in 2021, Paramount+ has been a home for original programming like "Halo" and "Knuckles," as well as content from CBS, Nickelodeon, and Showtime.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Has a Rough Track Record of Turning Sketches Into Movies. That Doesn’t Mean It Should Stop Trying
Image
We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live”! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.

When “The Blues Brothers” hit theaters in 1980, it opened a Pandora’s Box that would eventually gift Hollywood films like “Wayne’s World” and curse it with abominations like “It’s Pat” and “Coneheads.” John Landis’ ultra-cool film about two brothers on a mission from God to get the band back together was bursting with Chicago blues performances, epic car chases, and enough celebrity cameos to fill a season of “Saturday Night Live.” Grossing over $100 million on a $27 million budget, it proved to many that characters who originated on Lorne Michaels’ NBC variety show were more than capable of carrying their own feature film.

In theory, that was true. With “SNL” exploding in popularity and Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi wading into movie stardom,...

SNL Cast Members' Movie Becomes Surprise Streaming Success 2 Years After Release
Image
A comedy movie starring and written by multiple Saturday Night Live cast members has suddenly become a streaming success over a year after its release. Since its debut in 1975, NBC's long-running sketch comedy show has served as the springboard for 11 feature-length films based on some of the show's most popular sketches and characters, which have seen mixed success. Their first foray into film came in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's The Blues Brothers, which earned over $115 million at the box office against its $27 million budget.

The success of Wayne's World in 1992, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, encouraged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael to produce more film adaptations featuring popular characters. He brought back 1970s characters for Coneheads in 1993, followed by It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, and The Ladies Man. However, most of these movies struggled both critically and commercially,...

Will Ferrell Details How the Viral Buddy the Elf Moment Came to Be
Image
The Holidays are always a special time to watch Christmas movies and TV specials to help get in the spirit. One of the more beloved films was Elf, the 2003 Will Ferrell-led holiday comedy directed by Jon Favreau and co-starring a who's who of supporting actors. And just a few weeks ago, in what could have been a touching Christmas gift to fans, ended up being a hilarious viral moment at an LA Kings hockey game: Ferrell dressed as Buddy the Elf, but looking disheveled and "smoking" a (candy) cigarette while drinking a beer.

Buddy The Elf Is Officially In #Hockeywood 📠pic.twitter.com/CYudAwXVvo— LA Kings (@LAKings) December 30, 2024

While quite surprising and funny, there were questions about why Ferrell returned as Buddy, but not in a long-hoped-for sequel. Was the star promoting something? Sadly, that is usually the case when an actress or actor reprises a beloved character.

Was Eva Mendes Discovered From A Friend’s Photo?
Image
Eva Mendes was discovered through a friend’s portfolio (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Nope. Eva Mendes was spotted in a friend’s portfolio photo. Talk about a random break! Mendes, then a college student, was on her way to a marketing degree when a talent manager saw her picture and decided she had the look. The rest? As they say, it is history.

Mendes didn’t waste time following a traditional path. Her first role? Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror—yes, a direct-to-video horror flick. And let’s just say, she wasn’t exactly handing out Oscars for her performance. In fact, she wasn’t too happy with how it turned out, so what did she do? She hired herself an acting coach and got serious about the craft. She wasn’t about to let one bad gig ruin her hustle.

Then came the quirky roles. In A Night at the Roxbury...

Will Ferrell Reflects On The Enduring Legacy Of One Of His Most Beloved Movies 21 Years Later
Image
Comedy heavyweight Will Ferrell has reflected on the enduring legacy of one of his most iconic and beloved movies more than a decade after its release. First rising to prominence as a cast member of the comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, Ferrell branched out into comedy movies, securing parts in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and its sequel Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, as well as leading roles in movies like A Night at the Roxbury. He achieved global fame in 2003 when he co-starred in 'Frat Pack' comedy Old School, which grossed $87 million worldwide.

The success of the movie saw Ferrell become a comedy leading man, starring in a slew of successful comedy movies across the mid to late 2000s, including Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Wedding Crashers, Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, the Starsky & Hutch remake, and Step Brothers with John C. How ‘SNL’s ‘A Night at the Roxbury’ Guys Made It to the Big Screen
Image
As far as movies based on SNL sketches go, A Night at the Roxbury probably had the least to work with. Wayne’s World, MacGruber and even It’s Pat had well-defined characters with reliable bits. The Night at the Roxbury guys, however, didn’t even have names, which is why Steve Koren, who wrote the breakout SNL sketch for those characters, was surprised when Clueless director Amy Heckerling wanted to make a movie about two idiots who aggressively danced up on women in night clubs.

But soon thereafter, Koren, along with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan who played and created the characters, got to work on the script that would become A Night at the Roxbury.

I recently spoke to Koren about how the original draft was inspired by Saturday Night Fever, how the Marx Brothers contributed to the film’s title and how they sought to include every slang term...

14 Firsts, Mosts and Other Records From ‘Saturday Night Live’ History
Image
Saturday Night Live, née NBC’s Saturday Night, has broken so much new ground in late-night television that in many ways, it’s shaped the industry in its own image. But who were the firsts among the firsts?

14 The First Cast Member

Big names like Chevy Chase, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd have gotten more press over the years, but Gilda Radner was the first person Lorne Michaels added to the roster. She tragically passed away in 1989.

13 The Most ‘Live From New York’s

Chevy Chase got there first, announcing the calling card after the first sketch ever aired. But Darrell Hammond would say the famous phrase the most often throughout his career, clocking in at 70 times.

12 The First Host

The structure of the show was a lot different in the beginning, but Michaels was already set on a rotating menu of hosts. The first to do it was George Carlin...

Siskel and Ebert Reviewed an Episode of ‘SNL’ During ‘SNL’
Image
Legendary film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had pretty mixed opinions when it came to movies based on Saturday Night Live sketches. They gave Wayne’s World two thumbs up, but called Coneheads one of the worst films of 1993. And for some reason they were massive fans of Stuart Saves His Family? Really?

But the duo’s harshest SNL criticisms, oddly enough, happened during an episode of SNL.

Siskel and Ebert appeared in the very first episode of the Lorne Michaels-less eighth season. The hook? They would be reviewing the season premiere of SNL — as in the one that was in the middle of airing. As Siskel noted during the sketch, it was “history’s first live review of a television show still in progress,” which is a pretty clever meta joke. It arguably worked far better than the episode’s central, highly-irregular conceit: that host Chevy Chase was...

Revisiting ‘Entertainment Weekly’s 1994 Rules for Fixing ‘SNL’
Image
“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”

The magazine wasn’t alone in expressing concern for the long-running comedy series during its 19th season. The New York Daily News noted that SNL would have to try and “find a desperately needed fresh sense of identity” following the loss of Dana Carvey and Chris Rock, and the announced departures of Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney and Rob Schneider.

So EW offered up “20 suggestions” for “how to fix the show.” Looking back at this list, it’s amazing how spot-on some ideas are in retrospect — while others are laughably dated and arguably awful.

For starters, writer Bruce Fretts (who sadly passed away in 2020) suggested handing over the reins of Weekend Update to David Spade,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Wkrp In Cincinnati
Image
"Wkrp in Cincinnati" may not be easy to find on streaming these days, but it's still a highlight in sitcom history. The show about a failing radio station run by a groovy and eccentric team was a hit in the '70s, garnering 10 Emmy nominations and the coveted Humanitas Prize before signing off after four seasons. Unfortunately, the show's heavy emphasis on popular music has made it a rare quantity today: according to MTV, the show didn't make it to DVD until 2007 in part because it was tricky to secure the rights to all of the songs featured in its original run. It's currently only available digitally if you buy it on Apple TV, and versions of the show available today are still reportedly missing some songs, with stock music added in their place.

Still, the ultra-'70s show is worth seeking out for comedy fans and music fans alike,...

This 'Office Space' Star Got Himself Fired So He Could Appear in the Movie
Image
The 1990s saw many popular sketches from Saturday Night Live being adapted into films, as studios posited the theory that they could stretch out a recurring sketch into a feature length story. The success of these adaptations varied drastically in terms of quality. While Waynes World and its underrated sequel were both met with critical acclaim, films like Coneheads and A Night At The Roxbury had to settle for being cult favorites. Among the most unique projects of this era was Office Space, a comedy from Mike Judge based on the Milton short films he had developed for Saturday Night Live. The popularity of the Milton animated sketches had drawn enough interest in Judges material, but Office Space had a very tumultuous casting process.

What Happened to SNL Movies?
Image
SNL movies peaked in the '90s with hits like Wayne's World. Recent films like MacGruber haven't fared as well financially. As studios move away from theatrical comedies, SNL stars are finding success on the small screen with TV shows. The days of SNL launching movie star careers may be fading, with actors like Pete Davidson now finding TV success.

Live from the big screen, it's the Saturday Night Live movies! In its nearly 50-year history, NBC's iconic sketch comedy series has seen several hit sketches jump to the film world. Some have seen massive success. Others have returned with less-than-stellar results (nearly every other movie).

There is no doubt that the '90s were the peak of SNL and SNL movies. From 1992 to 2000, roughly one new film was released per year. SNL took the 2000s off before returning with the 2010 film MacGruber, the most recent SNL movie to date.

Wtf Happened to Will Ferrell?
Image
As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain - Andrew Robertson - 18772
Saturday Night Live (1975)
You may be unfamiliar with Please Don't Destroy, a comedy trio best known for their work in and within Saturday Night Live. Since 2021 they've contributed pre-recorded elements to the show. The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain therefore joins a long and august tradition of cast members making films. For every Wayne's World, Blues Brothers and without alliteration Ghostbusters, there's A Night At The Roxbury or a Coneheads. The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain is far more of the latter than the former, and it's vanishingly unlikely that anyone not already familiar with Please Don't Destroy will be minded to become so, especially after having seen it.

Saturday Night Live's influence on American comedy is as pernicious and pervasive as that of Cambridge Footlights on British humour. There are further connections with The National Lampoon growing out of Harvard, though their sophomoric tendencies were most visible in Animal House. There's...

Stefon Movie Based On Bill Hader’s ‘SNL’ Character Was Discussed, Seth Meyers Says
Seth Meyers at an event for Portlandia (2011)
Stefon Zelesky — movie star?

Seth Meyers said this week that a movie based on Bill Hader’s popular Saturday Night Live character was discussed but scrubbed, leaving the club kid who appeared on the late-night staple often from 2008-13, and a couple of times after, to linger only in fans’ memory. And YouTube (see below).

In an interview for Las Culturistas, the podcast hosted by comic actor Matt Rogers and SNL‘s Bowen Yang, the Late Night host said he would have had a small part in the pic but that his “Weekend Update” anchor would have died early on — after a long night of partying with Stefon. So someone else would have had to co-star.

“There was a moment in time where the idea of a Stefon script was being discussed,” he said. “This was not a scene that was written, but I did have a pitch for myself...

10 Great SNL Skits That Should Be Made Into Movies
Image
Iconic SNL skits like The Love-ahs, The Californians, and What Up With That deserve movies due to their hilarious antics and memorable characters. A Love-ahs film could explore the consequences of Roger and Virginia Klarvin's inappropriate behavior, while a Californians movie could hilariously showcase clashing personalities and parodies of California culture. Movies based on SNL sketches like Target Lady, Spartan Cheerleaders, and Stefon would offer comedic takes on retail jobs, competitive cheerleading, and NYC nightlife, respectively, with the potential for mass market success.

These iconic Saturday Night Live skits are so hilarious that they're begging to be fleshed out and adapted to the silver screen. Their hilarious antics, memorable characters, and unique Povs helped them achieve mass market success, and garner the critical acclaim that helped rouse audiences on Saturday nights. Due to their popularity, the best SNL skits not only rake in views, but they've since become recurring segments,...

HBO and Max New Releases: October 2023

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Talking of little shows that could, Doom Patrol is back for its last ever block of episodes, having long outlasted the many of the other ill-fated DC streaming series. Season two of The Gilded Age is also streaming this month, with Bertha challenging both Mrs. Astor and the old system in this new run.

And if none of that is up your street, there’s always Jason Statham punching sharks in the face,...

15 Popular Movies With Surprisingly Low Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
We all have a list of films we’ll always sit down to watch when we see them playing on cable or available on streaming. These can be critical darlings or cult classics or twisty thrillers or simply our go-to comfort food movies. They don’t even necessarily need to be considered good but to us they’re special.

Unsurprisingly, not all of our sentimental favorites earned the positive critical recognition we feel they deserved upon release. Here are 15 popcorn classics whose Rotten Tomatoes scores are surprisingly lower than you’d expect.

Event Horizon

It’s probably not a huge surprise to learn that this cult horror fave (and ersatz Warhammer 40K prequel movie) isn’t a critical darling. We’ve never cared. Who among us doesn’t own a raggedy DVD copy with the secondhand price tag still on the case?

But with an Rt score of 32%, it earned...

“It Didn’t Work As A Sketch!”: Why SNL’s Stefon Never Got A Movie
Image
Bill Hader explains why his fan-favorite SNL character Stefon never got a movie. Having risen to fame thanks to his 8-year stint as a major player on Saturday Night Live, Hader has now moved on to the auteur phase of his career, garnering critical acclaim as star and creator of HBO’s dark comedy Barry. But though Hader has clearly gone far beyond being just an uncanny impressionist and oddball comedic actor, questions are still asked about some of his most famous SNL creations, including hilariously bizarre - and somewhat divisive - Weekend Update character Stefon.

One question that indeed comes up for Hader is why Stefon, unlike many other fan-loved SNL characters, has never gotten a movie. Now Hader himself has explained why such a movie not only hasn’t happened, but wouldn’t make any sense. Speaking to The New Yorker, Hader revealed that the idea of a Stefon movie has come up,...

David Spade Almost Wrote A Saturday Night Live Gap Girls Movie With Chris Farley & Adam Sandler
Image
Since 1980, the weekly sketch show "Saturday Night Live" has produced eleven feature films based on its characters. "The Blues Brothers" was released in 1980 and remains one of our favorite "SNL" movies (though it's debatable how much of an "SNL" movie it is with no Lorne Michaels attached). It was another 12 years before another "SNL" movie came out, and it was worth the wait. The 1990s were the heyday for a proliferation "SNL" movies, beginning in 1992 with the beloved "Wayne's World."

The rest of the decade was hit or miss for "SNL" movies in terms of quality. We saw the return of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain in the heartwarming "Coneheads." Will Ferrell got his first leading role with "A Night at the Roxbury." There was an awful "Blues Brothers" sequel for some reason. And does anyone even remember they made an entire movie with Julia Sweeney's androgynous character, "It's...

Christoph Waltz
What’s New on Amazon Prime Video in February 2023
Christoph Waltz
Horror delights, rom-coms and a new sci-fi series starring Christoph Waltz are just a few of the highlights arriving on Amazon Prime Video in February. This month sees the debut of the second and final season of “Carnival Row” on Feb. 17, while Feb. 24 is when “The Consultant” – a “Severance”-like thriller series starring Waltz and directed by “WandaVision’s” Matt Shakman – drops.

In terms of new original Prime Video movies, on Feb. 10 there’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” a romantic comedy starring Alison Brie who co-wrote the script with her husband Dave Franco (who serves as director).

And you’ll find last year’s buzzy horror hit “Smile” on the streaming service on Feb. 21, while “Mad Max: Fury Road” filmmaker George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” arrives on Feb. 17.

That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: February 2023
Image
February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.

This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.

The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Click here to read the full article.

In assembling its annual list of the 50+ men and women who matter most in comedy today, The Hollywood Reporter surveyed the top performers, writers, producers, showrunners and execs in the industry to get their read on how the business of making people laugh is evolving. Below, long-established superstars (e.g. Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Kevin Hart), as well as some of this year’s breakouts (e.g. Kate Berlant and John Early, and the makers of smash hit half-hour The Bear) share their thoughts on the most played-out punchlines, offer their best ideas for getting comedies back in theaters, and assess what can safely be joked about these days. (For many, the answer on that last count remains: everything!) We also asked them to reveal more personal information, such as their secret sources of inspiration, and funniest mean thing ever said about them.

DWTS: Why Gabby Windey Had The Best 90s Night Dance
Image
Gabby Windey and Val Chmerkovskiy's Dancing With The Stars 90s night routine stood out from all the rest. As the competition narrows down, the strongest dancers of the season remain, while some of the weaker ones sadly went home. Fan favorite contestant Vinny Guadagnino was unfortunately eliminated at the end of 90s night after failing to impress judges with his Tango to "What Is Love," by Haddaway. The performance was an ode to the 1998 film A Night at the Roxbury, which includes a dance scene to the song. Heidi D'Amelio also went home, while her daughter Charli D'Amelio remains a top contestant.

While there were a lot of great DWTS performances of the night, Gabby's Samba to "Livin' La Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin brought something to the dance floor that no one else did. One of Gabby's best qualities on the show is her personality. Earlier in the season,...

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Week 8: ’90s Week Brings ‘Barbie Girl,’ Vanilla Ice and a Double Elimination
Image
(Spoiler Alert: This article reveals which two teams were sent home on Monday, Nov. 7)

“This past weekend, we lost Aaron Carter,” cohost Tyra Banks said at the top of Monday’s night show, remembering the pop star and Season 9 contestant who was found dead on Saturday at age 34. “The team here at ‘Dancing With the Stars’ recalls the energy and the fun that he brought to his show, to this ballroom and we offer our sincere condolences to his family.”

The eight remaining couples danced to hits from the ’90s on Monday, with live performances from Salt-n-Pepa, En Vogue, Vanilla Ice, and Kid ‘N Play.

After their individual dances, there was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard between Charli D’Amelio, Gabby Windey and Wayne Brady, while a bonus Relay Dance round left only Charli and Wayne tied for first.

Vinny Guadagnino and Koko Iwasaki were the second couple sent home on Nov.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: August 2022
Laz Alonso, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Tomer Capone, and Karen Fukuhara in The Boys (2019)
Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.

A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.

Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna in Eine Klasse für sich (1992)
Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.

Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).

Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.

Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.

Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

‘Dick’ Director on Challenges of Making a Watergate Comedy and Whether It Could Be Done Today
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Fascination over the mysterious identity of Deep Throat, the Watergate whistleblower, helped fuel the success of 1976’s Oscar-winning All the President’s Men, but it also led to another, far unlikelier project: 1999’s Dick, a bouncy comedy about two teen girls who unwittingly find themselves at the center of the scandal.

Dick focused on Betsy (Kirsten Dunst) and Arlene (Michelle Williams), a pair of 15-year-old best friends who wind up as President Nixon’s dog walkers and, somehow, become famed informant Deep Throat for Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward (Will Ferrell) and Carl Bernstein (Bruce McCulloch). (It wasn’t until 2005 that former FBI associate director Mark Felt revealed himself to have been the Post’s anonymous source.)

Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters on June 17, 1972, which led to Nixon’s resignation following his administration’s efforts to cover up its involvement,...

Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tien Tran, and Tom Ainsley in How I Met Your Father (2022)
Hulu New Releases: January 2022
Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tien Tran, and Tom Ainsley in How I Met Your Father (2022)
When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!

With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.

Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
The 10 Funniest Scenes From SNL Movies, Ranked
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Since comedy sketches are designed to run for about three minutes, they might not seem like great fodder for feature-length adaptations. And while that is the case, for the most part, a few of the greatest comedies ever made have been adapted from Saturday Night Live sketches.

From Coneheads and The Ladies Man to A Night at the Roxbury, there are a bunch of lackluster comedies that stretched out a one-note premise from an SNL sketch across an hour and a half. Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: January 2021
Michael C. Hall in Dexter (2006)
A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.

That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.

Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. Some movies of note arriving on Jan. 1 include Dr. Strangelove, The Truman Show,...

Russell Tovey, Bertie Carvel, and Amrita Acharia in The Sister: Vergraben (2020)
A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.

Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...
