Before Adam Sandler teed up again in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, his most critically acclaimed movie, Uncut Gems, nearly cast Scarlett Johansson in a lead role opposite Sandler; the role was originally written for newcomer Julia Fox.
In a June episode of the Jay Shetty Podcast, Fox revealed that although the Safdie brothers wrote the character of Julia De Fiore specifically for her, studio executives pushed for bigger names, including Johansson. She said,
I auditioned like everyone else. Unfortunately, even though they had written it for me, the studios were like, ‘We don’t know her.’ They wanted Scarlett Johansson and all these other beautiful women and established actresses.
Despite having doubts about her acting ability, Fox won the part after a screen test with Sandler. She added,

Adam Sandlerwas a staple of 90s and early 2000s comedy, and now, one of his most iconic films has a sequel out. The 1996 movie Happy Gilmore celebrated Happy (Sandler), a hockey player turned professional golfer whose unconventional approach to the sport did not make him allies. Especially with Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). The sequel, which was released in July 2025, comes out nearly 30 years later, and now if you're trying to watch the two back to back, you only have until the end of July to have that double feature on Netflix.
The sequel from director Kyle Newacheck is an emotional return to the character; the original film was directed by Dennis Dugan. But even 30 years later, the character of Happy Gilmore is someone who fans love for a reason. He loves fiercely, isn't ashamed of who he is, and will make sure that his skill as a golfer is loved and appreciated.

At this stage in his career, when Adam Sandler goes out to a prospective star of one of his projects, he probably doesn’t hear “no” a lot; it’s probably a lot likelier that he has to give a polite pass to the prospective stars who come to him. Bad Bunny may be one of the biggest musical acts in the world right now; that doesn’t mean he can’t show up to play Happy’s new golf caddy. Adam Sandler has once again proved his comedic genius and his talent with the release of Happy Gilmore 2. Being a sequel to his 1996 film, Happy Gilmore 2 has been enjoying a good time on Netflix as fans revisit the nostalgia where Sandler’s movies dominated the comedy genre.
When talking to ScreenRant about his decision to make Happy Gilmore 2, Adam Sandler was asked about revisiting his other classic movies, and perhaps giving them a sequel. The Pixels star was asked about finishing a trilogy, which went on to become one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic franchises of all time: Grown Ups.
When asked about a potential Grown Ups 3 as a means to finish off the trilogy, here’s what Adam Sandler had for a reply:
That could happen.
Back in 2010, Adam Sandler decided to cast his friends as parents and some kids for an ensemble cast in a movie called Grown Ups.

Happy Gilmore 2 has finally arrived on Netflix, and the much-anticipated Adam Sandler sequel's Rotten Tomatoes score is shockingly close to the original's. The new movie brings back much of the cast from the 1996 film, and crafts a legacy story about Happy returning to golf in order to fund his daughter's ballet classes.
The Rotten Tomatoes score for Happy Gilmore 2 is finally here, and, at the time of writing, it is a surprisingly decent 58% with critics based on the first 19 reviews, alongside a 72% audience score. This places it just below the 1996 original, which currently holds a 63% critic score and an 85% audience score.
While even the strongest reviews are not effusive, it seems that the film is connecting exactly as it needs to for most viewers. Richard Crouse called it "A mix of heart, rage, and silliness," while Kevin Slane of Boston.comdescribed it as "A little bit flabbier, a little bit shabbier,...

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Adam Sandler, whose legacy sequel movie Happy Gilmore 2 is releasing this weekend, addressed the possibility of reviving other iconic movies and characters in his filmography. Sandler had previously spoken about other '90s projects he might be interested in bringing back for legacy sequels, while talking about Happy Gilmore 2.
Alongside other noteworthy projects, Adam Sandler gave us a 1990s comedy movie performance we can never forget in Happy Gilmore. After nearly 30 years since its release, there is a sequel, whose director, Kyle Newacheck, also hopes to make a Little Nicky sequel someday. While it's a 2000 film, Little Nicky is in the same vein as Sandler's '90s movies.
As an actor with some of his best characters being from the '90s, Adam Sandler, when asked about reviving other projects from the decade, said, "I'd love to do that", about a potential sequel to The Wedding Singer.

“Happy Gilmore 2” is a happy orgy of raucously well-executed Adam Sandler fan service. It’s a pointed exercise in nostalgia, but with a present-tense edge. It’s not some fake update of the clever/dumb brand of slob comedy that made Sandler a superstar in the ’90s. It’s the genuine article, a true revival of Sandler’s Jerry Lewis-meets-rock ‘n’ roll rage. A sequel to his fabled 1996 golf comedy, it extends that movie’s anarchy-on-the-putting-green spirit as blithely as if the original had been made yesterday.
In the ’90s comedies that defined him, Sandler portrayed himself as an arrested man-child, the kind of antisocial loser who had to fight his way in. So you may ask: How easy is it for him to play the misfit-outsider today, now that he’s been encased in so many years of stardom?

Later this month, Adam Sandler’s titular character will head back to the driving range in Happy Gilmore 2, adding a fresh chapter nearly three decades since the original movie had audiences laughing-crying in 1996. Call it nostalgia or put it on the comedian’s never-ending popularity, but another classic Sandler movie from the ‘90s is making streaming waves ahead of the golf-centered sequel’s arrival. According to FlixPatrol, the Saturday Night Live alum’s 1999 comedy, Big Daddy, is enjoying a boost in viewership numbers around the globe thanks to its availability on HBO Max. In more than a dozen countries, including Salvador, Paraguay, and Costa Rica, audiences are tuning in to see Sandler be a father figure to The Suite Life of Zack & Cody stars Cole and Dylan Sprouse, in one of the twins’ earliest roles.

If baseball is America's pastime, then football is America's game, offering a harder hitting sport that pushes its players to their absolute limits. Ever since Hollywood started making sports movies, it's produced films revolving around football as a testament to the enduring popularity and cultural relevance of the game. And like the medium itself, football movies range across multiple dramas, whether it be searing dramas or screwball comedies. The narratives in the movies themselves can be based directly on true stories or just use the sport as a cinematic springboard for something wholly original.
Even if viewers aren't necessarily fans of football itself, there is still plenty to enjoy from movies surrounding the sport. With football always bringing such high intensity, movies about it can rival action flicks or character-driven dramas as a show of its versatility. Here are the 15 best football movies of all time ranked and ready to check out.

Another Adam Sandler sports comedy is heading to Hulu. Following Happy Gilmore's addition to the streamer's library earlier this month, The Longest Yard will make its way onto the platform at the top of next month.
Beginning July 1, The Longest Yard will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2005, the Peter Segal-directed sports comedy stars Sandler as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a washed-up former professional football quarterback who goes to prison and is forced to assemble a team to play against the guards. The movie was a remake of the 1974 movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, who appears in the new version as Nate Scarborough, a former college football star who agrees to coach the prisoners' team. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, William Fichtner, David Patrick Kelly, Tracy Morgan, and Cloris Leachman also appear in supporting roles.
The Longest Yard was a commercial success, grossing $191.5 million worldwide off an $82 million budget.

Kathy Bates, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is widely regarded as one of the greatest character actresses of all time.
A powerhouse on the stage and screens big and small for the past 50 years, she won a best actress Oscar for bringing from the page to the screen Annie Wilkes, the psychopathic “number one fan” of an author of romance novels, in Rob Reiner’s Misery (1990) — a character that later was chosen, in a poll conducted by the American Film Institute, as the 17th greatest movie villain of all time. She subsequently garnered three other Oscar nominations, all in the category of best supporting actress — for Mike Nichols’ Primary Colors (1998), Alexander Payne’s About Schmidt (2002) and Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell (2019).

For decades, Kathy Bates has been both celebrated and underrated. When she won an Oscar for her fearsome performance in Rob Reiner’s 1990 Stephen King adaptation of “Misery,” she was greeted as a newcomer, even though she had made her film debut nearly 20 years earlier in Miloš Forman’s “Taking Off.” Her career since then has included Oscar noms for “Primary Colors,” “About Schmidt” and “Richard Jewell,” 14 Emmy nominations and two wins for “Two and a Half Men”and “American Horror Story: Coven,” and a varied resume that boasts both dramas like “Dolores Claiborne” and “Titanic” and comedies like “The Waterboy.”
Bates’ latest role is the title character in Jennie Snyder Urman’s “Matlock,” which borrows its name from the Andy Griffith legal drama from the 1980s and ’90s but knowingly subverts it in the process: Bates’ Madeline Kingston, aka Matty Matlock, solves cases just as Griffith’s Matlock had done,...

There's no denying the impact 28 Days Later had on the horror genre. Although not technically the undead, the "infected" in the movie revitalized what was quickly becoming a tired zombie gimmick in film, breathing new life into the monsters whilst also holding a mirror up to society in a bleak and powerful way akin toDawn of the Dead. Danny Boyle's frenzied horror, led by Cillian Murphy’s breakout performance, is considered by many to be one of the genre's best.
However, fewer have indulged further into the franchise and tasted the flesh of the lesser-known sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Directed and co-written by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the 2007 installment follows siblings Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton), a pair of beacons in a bleak landscape with their genes thought to hold the cure to the Rage Virus. Alongside Poots and Muggleton, the movie also stars the big-name trio of Robert Carlyle,...

When CBS first ordered a "Matlock" reboot back in 2023, the decision may have been a head-scratcher to some. Even aside from the fact that most of the cast of the original "Matlock" have passed away and their fans were likely nearing 60 years of age at least, the television landscape is already so crowded with courtroom dramas that an addition of this kind could understandably feel unnecessary. Speaking for those of us who held that opinion back then, we're happy to have been proven wrong.
"Matlock" is an unexpectedly fresh TV show with a unique perspective on the legal procedural genre, buoyed by a cast that flaunts comedic and dramatic talent in equal measure. The beloved actor and comedian will reunite with Netflix once again for an upcoming coming-of-age comedy-drama, with a source who's seen the movie revealing that, not only will the streamer campaign hard for Sandler to be considered by the Academy, but that could even win a coveted golden statue.
Titled Jay Kelly, the movie is being helmed by Academy Award nominee and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, and could be described as a coming-of-middle-age comedy as it follows friends, played by Sandler and George Clooney, who rediscover their youthful spirit during a chaotic reunion.
Now, buzz from an early screening (via World of Reel) has emerged, with “industry sources, journalists, and test reports” stating that Sandler steals the show in Jay Kelly, with the Billy Madison star delivering a career-best performance.

Throughout its 50-year run, "Saturday Night Live" has been the launching pad for some of history's most beloved comedic actors and actresses. Fans often debate which decade of "SNL" was the best, but an argument can be made that the 1990s featured some of the funniest sketches in the show's history, introducing audiences to up-and-comers who would go on to become some of the biggest names in comedy to this day. One of those young stars was none other than Adam Sandler.
After making his film debut in 1989, Adam Sandler performed stand-up comedy in clubs. At one of his performances in Los Angeles, "SNL" cast member Dennis Miller was in attendance. Impressed by Sandler's material, Miller recommended him to Lorne Michaels, which led to Sandler landing a job in the "SNL" writers' room in 1990 and eventually being promoted to featured player in the cast. Adam Sandler is one of his generation's most iconic comedy actors. His early works, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer, etc., are among the most well-known and acclaimed. While later movies have seen a more "mixed" critical reception, Sandler has no doubt made his mark. But what if there was a secret Easter egg in several of his movies? And what if that Easter egg was hidden in plain sight?
In several Sandman pictures, his female love interest has the initials "Vv." There's Veronica Vaughn, Virginia Venit, Vicki Vallencourt, and more. But not every onscreen partner has these initials, so what's the story with the ones that do? Have we stumbled down some new conspiracy theory rabbit hole? Is "Vv" a secret sign warning of what's to come? Or is it just Sandler being Sandler and making up funny names? In all likelihood, the latter is the case.

The "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "Borderland" was significant within "Star Trek" lore. It was the first part of a three-episode arc that finally offered a canonical reason as to why Klingons looked like humans in the original "Star Trek" series, but had large, outsize foreheads in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." It seems that a mad geneticist named Arik Soong (Brent Spiner) had been tinkering with genetic enhancements, creating "ideal" versions of humanity called Augments. In the lore of "Star Trek," such genetic enhancements are strictly verboten, as previous such attempts led to a vicious Eugenics War on Earth. Soong's ostracized Augments fell in with Klingon society, and began having children. The kids of Augments and Klingons looked like 1966-era Klingons. The DNA, Soon argues, will be bred out within a few generations. Hence, why Klingons looked different on "Next Generation."

2025 is going to be a great year for fans of Adam Sandler. Alongside the comedic actors returning to Saturday Night Live in the recent 50th Anniversary Special, Sandler is set to tee off again in Happy Gilmore 2. The highly-anticipated sequel is debuting on Netflix this summer. However, Happy Gilmore wasn't the only beloved 90s sports comedy Sandler was a part of. The Waterboy was the other quintessential film from that decade that fans still can't get enough of. Now, ahead of Happy Gilmore 2’s release, Bobby Boucher has found a new streaming home.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's second rom-com together is climbing the streaming chart, as 50 First Dates sits at number five on the Prime Video chart. It's a great Valentine's Day date night movie and has plenty of charm and emotion. The movie follows a vet in Hawaii named Henry (Sandler) who falls for Lucy (Barrymore) with short-term memory loss. Basically, she forgets everything that happened the day before when she wakes up.
Her father and brother, played by Blake Clarke and a hilarious Sean Astin, are very protective of Lucy. Since she's "stuck" in the day she lost her memory in an accident, they attempt to play along with the idea that she wasn't in an accident. But love blooms between Henry and Lucy, despite his having to woo her constantly.
The film opened 21 years ago, on Feb. 13, 2004, just in time for Valentine's Day, and became an instant crowd-pleaser...

It’s unbelievable to learn that it has been almost 30 years since Happy Gilmore graced fans with its comedic presence in theaters and at home. The 1996 sports comedy was one of Adam Sandler’s first, before he had formed Happy Madison Productions, which went on to become a juggernaut in the movie business. The cast is made up of mostly familiar faces, many of whom went on to star in huge projects, including Sandler himself.
With a sequel film coming out this year, and many of the original cast members reprising their roles, fans are excited at the prospect of seeing the title character and his hockey-inspired golf style once again. But it also makes fans curious what the cast members have been up to in the last almost three decades, notably the ones who aren’t the most known figures.

Skye P. Marshall isn’t religious, but she does believe in magic. You’d have to have some faith in a higher power after the few years she’s had. For the “Matlock” actress, 2020 and beyond has been a veritable hot streak of impeccable timing, great luck, and classic Hollywood fairytale. Few TV actors experience such good fortune, especially these days — but Marshall’s breakout role on CBS’s buzzy legal drama didn’t happen overnight.
“I didn’t have the courage to ask for what I wanted to do with the rest of my adult life until I was 27,” Marshall told IndieWire, looking back on the decade since she moved from New York to California. “Everyone thought I was crazy. They were like, ‘Do you have an agent?’ ‘No.’ ‘Any formal training?’ ‘Not really.’ ‘You have friends in LA though, right?’ ‘No, I do not.’ It was a cocktail...

One of Adam Sandler's most underrated and divisive comedies is finally returning to streaming this February. Sandler's run of comedies from 1995 to 2008 is nothing short of legendary. Within that time, the actor and writer released Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Punch-Drunk-Love, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan (this writer's personal favorite). But, the film that kicked it all off was Billy Madison, and it's finally coming back to streaming.
Billy Madison arrives on Hulu on Feb. 1; it was directed by Tamra Davis, and co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy (Happy Gilmore) and is one of Sandler's most underrated comedies. Released in 1995, the film follows 27-year-old Billy Madison (Sandler) who is set to take over his father's hotel empire. However, his father (Darren McGavin) has one demand before he inherits the fortune: for his son to go back and finish school.

Throughout his sprawling repertoire of cinematic work, Adam Sandler largely made his name off PG-13 movies, gathering a hefty following back in the ‘90s thanks to titles like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy. But sidelining the swear words and adult material helped crack a window and allowed him to engage with a new audience, while lending his voice to an animated film would swing the doors wide open on a long-standing franchise. Right now, Hotel Transylvania, the movie that first kicked-off the film series, is streaming on Netflix and audiences are rushing to take a bite out of the family-friendly fun. Slowly but surely making its way up the list since its addition to the streamer at the beginning of the month, the star-studded comedy currently sits in the platform’s #6 spot, giving those who grew up on Sandler’s crass ‘90s movies a chance to introduce him...

Because the world is a cruel place to beautiful souls like Adam Sandler, Ariana Grande can’t get through The Waterboy without some waterworks.
On paper, the story of The Waterboy and Bobby Boucher is practically a tragedy — a young man grows up in a repressive religious household raised by a traumatized and manipulative single mother, and his only escape from this rural, swampy poverty is through channeling his deep-seated pain and rage into physical violence that’s exploited for entertainment purposes.
Honestly, a critical read of the Sandler classic could interpret The Waterboy as an indictment of America’s obsession with violence, our insufficient education system and the controlling nature of fundamentalist Christianity in rural communities.
Maybe that’s why the pop star Grande weeps when she sees Boucher victimized onscreen, as she revealed in a recent interview clip that demands a watch after Nikki Glaser made beautiful celebrities...

The Waterboy brings singer, songwriter, and actress Ariana Grande to tears every single time she watches the classic 1998 sports comedy. In the film, Adam Sandler’s beloved Bobby Boucher finally finds his place as a member of Coach Klein’s (Henry Winkler) Sclsu Mud Dogs, but it isn’t easy. The Wicked star can’t hold back the waterworks when Bobby asks quarterback Gee Grenouille (Peter Dante) to remain his friend after blowing an early-season game for the football team. Gee refuses, and Grande can't hold back the tears, she said in an interview with W magazine:

Wicked star Ariana Grande has become renowned for her tearful interviews, but she claims one Adam Sandler movie never fails to make her cry. A former Nickelodeon child star and pop sensation, Grande recently wowed audiences as the Good Witch of the South, Glinda, in 2024’s record-breaking adaptation of the Wicked stage musical. Throughout the movie’s promotional efforts, Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo became renowned for their emotion-filled interviews, prompting a slew of memes and viral reaction videos.
The frequency with which both actors had been brought to tears while promoting Wicked was not lost on either star. During one such interview, Grande even headed off prospective critiques of her propensity for crying, claiming, “I’ll say it first. I’m annoyed, I’m tired. My tear ducts [are tired].” Nonetheless, both stars remained resolute that their reaction was the natural culmination of a three-year-long journey during which both had formed a strong behind-the-scenes bond.

For decades, Adam Sandler has been one of Hollywood's biggest stars, churning out hit comedy after hit comedy despite the less than stellar reputation a lot of them might have. His '90s run is one of his career high points with an impressive group of films that include Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, and Big Daddy. Most of these films work so well solely because of Sandler's work in them.
Looking at Adam Sandler's best films overall tells a much different story, though. Under all the over-the-top comedic antics, Sandler's ability to bring out incredible dramatic performances is what helps to set him apart for so long in his career. Even his upcoming run of films would make no sense for most actors, but that is what makes Adam Sandler so interesting as an actor.

Adam Sandler has had one of the most enviable careers in show business since first appearing as Smitty on The Cosby Show in 1987. He has a list of comedy credits a mile long with many hits (and some flops that nonetheless provided him a vacation with his friends), and he's become a respected dramatic actor thanks to films like Punch-Drunk Love and Uncut Gems. On top of that, he's still a beloved stand-up comic who has released material for more than 30 years, including this year's excellent Netflix special, Love You.
However, despite this massive career, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better period than his prolific run of film in the '90s — Airheads (1994), Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998), and The Waterboy (1998), with Little Nicky, Punch-Drunk Love, and Mr. Deeds right around the corner. Apparently, Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song” isn’t as ubiquitous as we thought.
Kathy Bates, who played Mama Boucher in The Waterboy, had never heard of the song — or Sandler — when she first received the script for the film. “Did you get The Waterboy right out of the gate?” Drew Barrymore asked Bates on her show this week.
“I actually read the first 12 pages and threw it in the trash right next to my bed,” Bates confessed. But the script didn’t stay in the garbage for long. Her niece Linda, who’s worked with Bates since 1994, rescued the screenplay soon after and asked why she threw it out. “Oh, it’s some football script, I don’t know what it is.”
Linda read the name on the front of the script. “Adam Sandler! You don’t know ‘The Chanukah Song’?”
Bates confessed she’d heard of neither, but Linda set her straight.

Henry Winkler had a memorable role in the Adam Sandler-led comedy The Waterboy, but as it turns out, Winkler's participation was not planned. The Happy Days star's appearance as Coach Klein was a last-minute favor for Sandler, who reached out to Winkler after the original actor cast for the role didn't show up for production. Frank Coraci's The Waterboy follows Sandler's Bobby Boucher, an awkward waterboy who discovers he has a hidden talent for football and becomes a member of Coach Klein's team. During an appearance on the Let's Talk Off-Camera with Kelly Ripa podcast, Winkler recounted the story of how he ended up as Coach Klein:
"I did [The] Waterboy. He [Sandler] called me up in the middle of the night. He said, 'Henry, I need a favor. My actor didn't show up. I need you to drive right now to the park. It's in L.A.

Misery is Kathy Bates' all-time best performance by far. Nothing else comes even close, but we're sure you knew that already. However, we're really underselling it with that statement, as Kathy Bates' performance as Annie Wilkes in the notorious Stephen King adaptation is not only her career-best role, it's also one of the greatest horror/thriller performances ever put to screen. A good amount of credit for that can be given to Rob Reiner's direction and William Goldman's screenplay, but the real star of Misery is undoubtedly Kathy Bates. While the Matlock star is well-known for her impeccable range, other notable performances by Kathy Bates range from downright hysterical roles like in The Waterboy to effectively dramatic ones like in Richard Jewell which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Just about every aspect of why we love Kathy Bates is on display in Misery. There's humor,...

After a remarkable 50-year career in Hollywood, Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates has decided to retire, with the CBS reboot of Matlock serving as her final project.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Bates, 76, expressed her plans to step away from acting, calling this moment her “last dance.”
Reflecting on her career, Bates shared that acting has, at times, consumed her life, leaving little room for personal space. “It becomes my life,” Bates explained. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent, because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.” She added that she often felt out of place in the industry, noting, “I never felt dressed right or well.
