At about 14 minutes into the film, when Ulee and his grand daughter are out in the workshop talking, you can see behind the girl a framed set of military medals and a patch. The patch is that of MACVSOG, the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, Special Operations Group, which was an outfit for special Forces soldiers and other black ops personnel. Among the medals visible are the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Service ribbon. These indicate that Ulee may have been a Special Forces soldier in Vietnam assigned time MACVSOG.
