Oda: Doraemon Writer’s Forgotten 46-Year-Old Anime Inspired Smiles in One Piece
Image
The writer for Doraemon, Masaki Tsuji, also wrote Future Robot Daltanious in 1979, which Eiichiro Oda took inspiration from to create the Smile users in his work, One Piece. The titular robot was the first mecha to combine an animal component in its appearance.

In One Piece, SMILEs are artificial Zoan Devil Fruits, created by Caesar Clown and Donquixote Doflamingo. They were monopolized and consumed by the Beasts Pirates, which transformed them all into animal hybrids, from chickens to elephants. These designs were very close to the robots in Future Robot Daltanious. So, what does Oda have to say about this?

The best way to watch Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion in order, including the Neon Genesis Evangelion series, is to start with the original 26-episode TV series. Then, follow up with The End of Evangelion, and complete the experience with the four Rebuild movies.

Sounds simple, right? Well, the trick is knowing which versions to pick and which extras you can safely skip without completely losing the plot. This series is infamous for being extremely head-scratchy, and the viewing order can be as confusing as the series itself. This October, the entry that is arguably one of the best anime movies of all time is getting a Blu-ray release: Evangelion:2.22 You Can (Not) Advance is already available for preorder on the Crunchyroll store.

Evangelion Anime Director Says Gundam 'May Not Even Survive Another 10 Years' Without Major Mecha Update
Image
The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise is synonymous with the mecha anime genre, and it also jumpstarted the "Real Robot" subgenre. Unfortunately, the popularity that the brand spawned in decades past might not be enough to keep it relevant, according to one anime legend.

Kazuya Tsurumaki is a mecha icon, having helped create the iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion before recently directing the latest Gundam anime, Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX. In a recent interview, he discussed his relationship with the franchise and how it impacted him and the generation that he was a part of. Sadly, this reflection also notes many trends in anime and manga, with the implications potentially being dire for the Gundam brand.

Gundam's Future in Doubt: Top Director Warns of Declining Appeal
Image
For decades, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has stood as one of anime’s most enduring legacies, shaping the mecha genre and influencing countless series. But one of its top directors, Kazuya Tsurumaki, believes the franchise’s future is in doubt. In a recent interview, the Gundam GQuuuuuuX director warned that the cultural appeal of piloted robots may no longer resonate with younger audiences.

Tsurumaki, best known for his work on Evangelion and Flcl, explained that Gundam’s survival could be at risk within the next decade, according to Yahoo! Japan. While older generations once viewed mecha as extensions of their real-world love for cars and motorcycles, today’s youth are growing up with different fantasies. This shift, he argues, may leave robot anime struggling to stay relevant in a changing entertainment landscape.

Why Robots May No Longer Resonate in Anime

When Gundam first debuted in 1979, piloting a giant machine represented both power and maturity.

Wind Breaker Plagiarism Row: Other Manga & Manhwa That Were Cancelled But Fans Barely Remember
Image
Manga & Manhwa Cancelled for Plagiarism You Might’ve Forgotten (Photo Credit – Crunchyroll)

The webtoon world was shaken when Wind Breaker, one of Naver’s biggest hits, was abruptly taken down following plagiarism allegations. With over 600 million views and a loyal fanbase, the manhwa’s sudden disappearance left readers stunned. It also triggered conversations about artistic integrity in comics. But Wind Breaker isn’t the first series to be axed for crossing the line between inspiration and imitation.

Wind Breaker was a long-running Korean webtoon about competitive cycling and friendship by Jo Yong-seok. In July 2025, the author and Naver both issued public apologies after fans spotted scenes that looked nearly identical to panels from well-known Japanese manga, including Tokyo Ghoul and Yowamushi Pedal. Some panels appeared to be directly traced. After an internal review confirmed the claims, the platform pulled the series and refunded readers who had purchased chapters.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2 TV Review: Seth Rogen’s latest satirical food fight could give you indigestion
Image
Plot: Exiled from home, Frank, Barry, and Sammy soon find themselves in New Foodland, a shining utopia for food and humans alike. But beneath the city’s glossy fridges and cheery smiles lies a dark secret threatening the sentient food society.

Review: Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a deceptive serving of entertainment. On one hand, it’s raunchy, low-brow, and immature. On the other hand, it’s a subversive, clever, and winking satire that goes down like a steaming forkful of humble pie. It stands at a crossroads between “I’m so glad this exists” and “What the f**k am I watching?” You’re either prepared to buy the ticket and take the ride, or there’s no sense in attending the barbecue. The second season of Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a trail mix of quality, and like any other bag of this unruly snack, there are ingredients I...

This Modern-Day Anime Might Be the New ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’
Image
A modern-day anime might be the second coming of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and it is none other than Fire Force, and that is simply because it has been one of the most creative, intense, and bold Shonen in recent times. However, as it was halfway through its third season, Fire Force seemed to bring in a surreal episode that rings like the iconic 90s classic did.

Fire Force Season 3, Episode 12, features a metaphysical journey for protagonist Shinra Kusakabe. This rings different from the usual vibe of the series and seems to be a direct homage to the daunting yet unforgettable “Third Impact” part of Evangelion.

Does this mean Fire Force will continue on the raw, cerebral, and psychological form of expression that Neon Genesis Evangelion has? We cannot be sure, however, finding an anime that can seamlessly integrate such a sequence into its anime is rare, making Fire Force worthy of being its spiritual successor.

In a recent interview, Hideaki Anno (posted by @HamelnFilgaia/X) admitted that he purposefully shaped the finale into something confusing and often controversial because it felt more genuine to him than providing a neatly packaged grand conclusion.

My goal was never to provide answers or a sense of resolution.

Instead of answering every question or wrapping up the plot in a conventional way, the final TV episodes were left deliberately incomplete. Their ambiguity has now become a core part of the experience. To Anno, this lack of closure wasn’t a flaw, but a reflection of the messy, unresolved nature of real emotions and human struggles.

Watch: Studio Ghibli & The Boy and the Heron Animation Director Reunite for Adorable New Anime Short
Image
In 2023, prominent animation director Takeshi Honda collaborated with Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki on the latter's coming-of-age fantasy epic, The Boy and the Heron. Recently, Honda returned to Ghibli to create an animated short for Marushin -- a company that has been partnered with Studio Ghibli for over 30 years.

Initially founded in 1966, Marushin is a popular manufacturer of high-quality towels in Japan. The company became a licensing partner with Studio Ghibli in 1994, thus allowing Marushin to release collaborative products bearing motifs and themes from Ghibli's works. As detailed on Marushin's official site, Studio Ghibli recently helped its 30-year-old affiliate create its first-ever TV commercial. The short features a small white dog happily chasing after various objects, including Porco Rosso's red seaplane and the little car driven by Sousuke's mother in Ponyo. By the end of the commercial, the dog is sitting with a bright yellow towel at its feet. Cbr...

5 Essential Anime Movies Everyone Should Watch At Least Once
Image
The medium of animation is extremely vast and versatile. Even if you narrow it down to just anime (animation produced in Japan), there are so many different genres and tones that making any sort of comprehensive list is a near-impossible task (but you better believe we've tried). Despite what some Academy members may think, anime is much more than movies for kids, and much more than just "Dragon Ball," even if that particular show has come to define action-adventure anime for the last 40 years. Shonen shows and movies (like "Dragon Ball") cater to an entirely different demographic than, say, "A Silent Voice," which is also a very different demographic and tone from "My Neighbor Totoro."

We can at the very least get you started with some essentials if you have never stepped into the exciting world of anime. We already covered five essential anime TV shows everyone should try, so...

The Anime Industry Can Fix Its Fanservice Problem With One Small Change
Image
For everything great about anime as a medium, there’s always some unnecessary fanservice bringing down the overall perception. From One Piece to Dandadan, some of the best anime series are guilty of inappropriate portrayal of their female cast. And a huge part of the fanservice problem can be solved if only the anime industry kept the underage characters out of the fanservice shtick.

Fanservice, if done right, can enhance the storytelling or become an integral part of it. Moreover, there are better ways to portray such situations. For instance, anime series like Chainsaw Man and Neon Genesis Evangelion make the suggestive scenes relevant to the plot. And the portrayal is self-aware and highlights the problematic aspects quite well. With that said, underage characters should still be off-limits.

The Anime Industry Should at Least Make the Fanservice Age Appropriate

Imagine you’re watching one of the best fight scenes, and...

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Has A Hidden Mecha Anime Reference
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

What elevates the "Spider-Verse" films above from other multiverse superhero movies is how they use the multiverse premise in formal ways; different universes have different animation styles and color palettes. One of the more offbeat Spider-People in "Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse" was Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), who hails from an anime universe. Rather than having spider powers of her own, Peni is a mecha pilot. Or rather, she has a psychic link with the spider that pilots the mecha (Sp//dr) built by her late father.

For an anime novice (as I was when I first saw "Into The Spider-Verse"), Peni probably seems like a more generic anime homage. The psychic spider is just some typical anime weirdness, you think. But if you're more versed in Japanese animation, you'll realize Peni's backstory is specifically based on the famously surreal mecha series "Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Psycho-frame on how Anime Provides That Creative Spark
Image
If you are ever in the need for some super slamming deathcore, look no further than Psycho-frame. The supergroup has been releasing killer merch, incredible snare blasts (shout-out interview alumnus Hunter Young for dialing that in) and all-time classic EPs for the past few years, culminating in the release of their first full-length record, Salvation Laughs In The Face Of A Grieving Mother . Astute readers will probably have noticed by now that their name is a Gundam reference, and it will shock no one that the entire band is filled with anime fans. Upon the release of their new record ad right after the band visited Crunchyroll HQ, I chatted with vocalist Colter Cuthbertson about how anime permeates all facets of the band. Was anime on or around while you were writing or recording the new album? Colter Cuthbertson : Yes! I was just finishing Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 around the...

ChaO Review: Studio 4°C’s Subversive Splash in Animation Waters
Image
In the crowded field of animated romance, few films dare to make their central love interest a giant orange fish with destructive tendencies. Yet this is precisely the bold choice that marks Yasuhiro Aoki’s feature directorial debut, “ChaO,” a film that takes the familiar mermaid romance template and gleefully dismantles it piece by piece.

Set in a meticulously crafted futuristic Shanghai where humans and merpeople have achieved an uneasy coexistence, the story follows Stephan, a lowly shipping company employee whose dreams of designing flying machines are interrupted by an unexpected marriage proposal from ChaO, a mermaid princess who appears as an enormous fish on land.

Aoki, whose animation credentials include work on “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Digimon,” brings a veteran’s understanding of character design and world-building to this Studio 4°C production. The film positions itself as both romantic comedy and ecological parable, using the premise of interspecies romance to explore themes of acceptance,...

Marvel’s Thunderbolts Recreates One Of Anime’s Most Divisive Endings
Image
Marvel’s Thunderbolts Delivers a Bold, Evangelion-Inspired Ending That Defies Superhero Norms (Photo Credit – Instagram)

With its May 1 debut, Thunderbolts proves Marvel isn’t afraid to color outside the lines. Instead of the usual “heroes saved the universe” ending, Marvel cued a weird, trippy finale that left fans blinking in confusion.

Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie throws together Marvel’s most emotionally unavailable characters—Yelena, Bucky, Ghost, the whole troubled bunch to stop some massive threat. Sounds like a usual Marvel Setup. But this is where Thunderbolts changed the whole superhero script into a raw, emotional, and deeply human. And planned not to go out in a blaze of CGI and explosions.

Marvel Swaps Its Hero Ending For a Mind-Bending Spiral

The climax takes a left turn that no one saw coming. As things spiral, the screen floods with haunting visuals, flickering memories, reality glitches, and timelines bleeding together.
