Michelle Randolph is preparing to leave the Wild West behind her and strike gold by joining a new franchise. The 1923 and Landman star is one of the many (sometimes unbelievable) names set to join Kevin Williamson’s Scream 7 — and she couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunity. During a recent conversation with The Playlist, the actress opened up about her first dance with the slasher film series, revealing that — like so many of us out there — she’s also a mega-fan of the movies first made famous by Wes Craven’s 1996 feature, Scream.
“I’ve seen every single Scream,” Randolph admitted, adding, “So there was a lot of pressure to make sure we keep the audience happy.” When it comes to a Scream movie, it really is all about giving the fans what they expect — a blood and gore-filled movie that leans into the meta and doesn’t...

For more than two years, Joe Lipsett has dissected Amityville Horror films to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
I have no recollection of The Unspoken. Canadian writer/director Sheldon Wilson’s film apparently played at Fright Fest in 2015 before getting a day and date theatrical/VOD release in October 2016, followed by a DVD release from Anchor Bay that December.
Reviews were middling with most critics decrying the film’s reliance on ghostly figures and jump scares, lamenting its lack of scariness (an extremely subjective criticism) and protesting its “complicated” story.
So why is the film a topic of conversation for this editorial? Because The Unspoken is a secret Amityville prequel.
Okay, yes, it’s literally only revealed in the film’s closing scene when the film’s antagonists, single mom Jeanie (Pascale Hutton) and her mute son Adrian (Sunny Suljic...

Celebrating final girls isn’t uncommon practice in the horror world. In fact, if anything, we celebrate quite a number of final girls on a consistent basis, including Sally Hardesty (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the reboot), Ripley, Nancy Thompson (A Nightmare on Elm Street 1 + 3 and New Nightmare) Sidney Prescott (Scream 1-5 and soon 7) and more. Those ladies get their fair share of recognition from horror fans, but what about the other final girls? What about the final girls who are underdiscussed?
There should always be room for discussion of final girls who might not be well known, part of a major franchise, or belong to several marginalized communities. There are a few recent final girls that have received recognition, like Em (Nope), Beth (Evil Dead Rise), Sienna Shaw (Terrifier 2 and 3), Sam Carpenter (Scream 5 and 6), Rain (Alien: Romulus) and more. But the following final girls are the ones that don...

We don’t really know the “rules” for a seventh movie in a horror franchise but we have to assume there won’t be any telekinesis involved in Scream 7. But we do know it will be going back through its history, as the likes of Roman Bridger, Stu Macher and Billy Loomis are returning despite having been killed off in the first and third movies. But another Scream 3 alum, Parker Posey, has a different idea on how she can return to the Scream universe…and it’s about as meta as it gets.
In 2000’s Scream 3, Parker Posey played Jennifer Jolie (an obvious nod to Jennifer Aniston and Anjelina Jolie), an actress who was cast as Gale Weathers in Stab 3, the third installment in the movies based on the Ghostface killings that tormented Sidney Prescott. So, with Jennifer killed off in Scream 3, that leaves just one...

The past couple of weeks have seen many casting announcements for Scream 7. At first, they seemed fairly normal, with people like Isabel May and McKenna Grace fulfilling the teen roles. Makes sense, as they always need a new cast of young victims, as Neve Campbell’s Sydney Prescott can only do so much. Then part of the Core Four was announced, with Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy-Brown returning as the Meeks’. Very cool considering the Barrera/Ortega films appeared to be getting excised. But that’s when things started to get weird. Despite rumors of his involvement for months, Patrick Dempsey was not cast as Sydney’s husband, instead Joel McHale ended up taking the role. Unexpected but scheduling conflicts happen and they clearly have a movie to make. But that’s when we got some true head-scratchers. Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard were both announced as having roles in the film.

If there’s one found footage device I admittedly don’t tire of, it’s following a team of folks who hope to uncover the truth behind local mysteries and urban legends. I’m sure many of us can pinpoint at least one local bit of horror lore passed down to us as kids–that story that survived across generations and inspired beliefs in the strange and unusual amidst environments that often felt otherwise unremarkable. While this setup is the catalyst for more than a few found footage flicks past and present, there’s something to be said for films of this ilk that are born of true-to-life lore that has managed to not only stand the test of time but also evolve as significant markers of local culture.

For many years, the high-water marks for movies based on video games were Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 fight film "Mortal Kombat" and his 2002 zombie flick "Resident Evil." One can see what a sorry state we were in if those two mediocre films were the high-water marks of anything. Adapting video games to the big screen has long been tricky for Hollywood. These films are often lambasted as terrible and have typically bombed ("Kombat" and "Resident" notwithstanding). Alternatively, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel's 1993 adaptation of "Super Mario Bros." is deeply beloved by a passionate cult of weirdos who love its zany ideas (a cult I belong to), but most folks didn't like how far the film strayed from Shigeru Miyamoto's Nintendo property.

Wes Craven is widely known for shaping the horror genre with hits like Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, but his lesser-known works reveal a filmmaker with a more nuanced approach to storytelling. Although many of his movies didn't achieve the same level of success, they highlight the director-writer-producer's ability to explore deeper themes and push the limits of genre filmmaking, particularly horror movies.
Craven’s work outside his most famous titles often explored darker, more experimental ideas, combining horror with psychologically intense themes. Some of his most underrated movies are not merely about shocking and scaring the viewer; they also examine human nature, fear, and the consequences of societal issues. Titles such as Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and The People Under the Stairs demonstrate Craven’s potential to innovate and challenge expectations, all while continuing to offer a still-fresh perspective on what horror can be. With much-deserved praise for his most popular works,...

Like the grand majority of film critics out there, Roger Ebert, the famous Chicago Sun-Times referent for all things regarding movies, and probably the most important film critic in history, didn’t exactly love horror movies. It didn’t matter if it was on the TV show Siskel & Ebert, with fellow critic Gene Siskel, or reviewing in print material, Ebert famously looked down on most horror movies. Only a handful of scary films made his Great Movies list (according to his website there are only 16), and a four-star rating was not common. But this doesn’t mean he wasn’t impressed by them occasionally, a good example being Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Made in 1994, but from an idea director Wes Craven had in 1987, New Nightmare is a different kind of horror film. There’s nothing quite like it in the universe of scary films, and this is probably...

When Clive Barker's name-making masterpiece Hellraiser arrived in 1987, it changed everything for horror fans. His sadomasochistic fantasy of androgynous demons was fiercely transgressive, distinctly queer, and totally unique. Seven sequels later, however, it had devolved into a generic teen slasher starring none other than Superman himself, Henry Cavill. In Hellraiser: Hellworld, the iconic Cenobites take a back seat to hard-partying gamers at a house party that seems to have made Mr. Cavill, and the critics, seriously uncomfortable.
Barker's original vision, crystallized in Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II, was a Faustian fable of jaded degenerates who seek extreme pleasures in other dimensions. On the other hand, the heroes of Hellraiser: Hellworld seek only random hookups at secret raves; fans hoping to rendezvous with Pinhead will be sorely disappointed. It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

The film-maker’s 1984 shocker gave pop culture a new, physics-defying villain in the misshape of Freddy Krueger
From the beginning of his career, when he reworked Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring into The Last House on the Left, one of the nastiest (and smartest) exploitation horror films of the 1970s, the director Wes Craven had the unique ability to reconcile high-minded ideas with low-down genre kicks. In person, he had a professorial air because he was once, in fact, a professor, teaching English and the humanities at various north-eastern colleges before picking up a 16mm camera. He would turn The Hills Have Eyes into a cannibalistic shocker that doubled as a stark class critique and give the villainous couple of The People Under the Stairs the unmistakable echo of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. He understood as well as anyone how horror could be a vessel for larger themes, so...

Over the course of seven A Nightmare On Elm Street installments in ten years, supernatural slasher Freddy Krueger became an icon, loved by adults and kids alike. Creator Wes Craven was compelled to make the final film, New Nightmare, with his original cast playing themselves in a story of how Freddy Krueger had taken over popular culture. However, the same experiment had already been done in the previous film, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, in a subtler but cleverer way.
Series producer Rachel Talalay, who also had credits in John Waters movies and the satirical Tank Girl, made her directorial debut with the sixth A Nightmare On Elm Street film. Fans didn't appreciate the film's goofiness, feeling that it took Freddy's dark humor too far. However, this comic focus facilitated a clever examination of Freddy's infiltration of everything from video games to rock 'n' roll. The least popular sequel is...

This year, Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Wes Craven’s immortal horror classic, turns 40.
The film, inspired by true events (watch the documentary “The Nightmare” for more), follows a group of kids who die after encountering a spooky boogeyman named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Freddy is the classic god of mischief – a shapeshifting serial killer with the power to scare teenagers to death. Heather Langenkamp plays Nancy Thompson, one of the terrorized teens who discovers her own familial connection to Krueger.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” would spawn an enviable franchise, including sequels (Langenkamp would return for “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors” and “New Nightmare”), a television series, a 1-900 number where you could chat with Freddy (seriously), oodles of merchandise, a spin-off (2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason”) and a remake (among other things). Few horror filmmakers constantly reinvented themselves as skillfully as Wes Craven, the highly influential director of such all-time beloved classics as The Last House on the Left, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and many more. In 1994, Craven completely flipped the Elm Street franchise on its ear with the highly inventive New Nightmare. This meta-narrative continues to be utilized 30 years later as a storytelling device toying with audience expectations.
As New Nightmare celebrates its 30th anniversary in October 2024, a look at Craven's intelligent screenplay and how the brilliant blurring of fiction and reality transcends Elm Street lore will show how a director can reinvigorate a stale horror franchise. It's also worth exploring how New Nightmare helped popularize the story-within-a-story template that continues to increase in the horror genre.

Back in mid-September, we began a themed collection of episodes featuring Gay Icons and Anniversaries. Trace and I kicked off the series with a revisit of Jennifer’s Body (listen) before delving into Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Birth (listen), and David Fincher’s Gone Girl (listen) for its 10th anniversary.
Now it’s time to tackle the 50th anniversary of Tobe Hooper‘s classic text, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It’s a film that hardly needs an introduction, but in case folks have never seen it, the film follows a van full of teenagers travelling through Texas to ensure the resting site of a relative hasn’t been disturbed by a recent wave of grave robberies.
Of course what they do is run afoul of a family of men who have resorted to murder and cannibalism following the closure of the slaughterhouse. With masked killer Leatherface doing most of the heavy lifting,...

Few directors can legitimately lay claim to one major horror franchise. Wes Craven is the rare mastermind behind two. The genre icon not only envisioned one of the most imaginative slasher entries of all time with 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, he reinvented the genre once again in 1996 with Scream. Both films birthed franchises that remain tentpoles of the genre, making household names out of beloved final girls and frightening onscreen killers alike. And between them lies Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, a curious 1994 slasher sequel that not only takes place in our world, but offers a faux glimpse behind the scenes of horrific storytelling. Arguably a prototype for the meta-slasher craze, New Nightmare blurs the line between fantasy and reality while questioning the power of horror in a rapidly changing world.

One of the most iconic horror movies is celebrating a major milestone with A Nightmare on Elm Street's 40th anniversary. The 1984 film hailed from writer/director Wes Craven, who had built a solid filmography for himself up to that point with the likes of The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes, and properly put him on the map as one of the genre's greats. From there on, Craven's genre spotlight would continue to grow with the likes of the now-cult classics The Serpent and the Rainbow and The People Under the Stairs and, eventually, launching the still-iconic Scream franchise with Kevin Williamson.
1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street told the story of Nancy Thompson, a teenager living in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio, who, along with her friends and boyfriend, find themselves tormented in their dreams by a mysterious figure who has the...

"Who better to resurrect Freddy than his creator?" This is the question posed by producer Bob Shaye, playing himself, in 1994's "New Nightmare," typically billed as Wes Craven's "New Nightmare." That's because Craven, who had long since stepped away from directing the Freddy Krueger films, had returned to his post behind the camera. However, this wasn't just for a paycheck; Craven was about to provide the genre with its boldest reinvention arguably since he introduced us to Freddy in the original nightmare-inducing "A Nightmare on Elm Street" a decade earlier.
The film sees Craven, as well as actors Heather Langenkamp (who played Nancy in the original "Nightmare") and Robert Englund (who had been Freddy in every entry in the franchise up...

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most beloved and well-known horror franchises ever, partly because of the nightmarish journey its final girl, Nancy, underwent. With the trademark dream sequences blurring the lines between reality and fiction and the terrifying Freddy Krueger, A Nightmare on Elm Street remains one of horror's best franchises. Although there are only six movies in the original Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, the series has expanded to include non-canonical films, horror crossovers, and a television show. Although A Nightmare on Elm Street has multiple final girls, the franchise is notorious for killing them in future installments.
Nancy Thompson, A Nightmare on Elm Street's original final girl, appears in A Nightmare on Elm Street, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Although Nancy has dark brown hair, she acquires a streak of gray hair after...

Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.
As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

Nightmare On Elm Streets Robert Englund Reveals His 1 & Only Condition For Unretiring Freddy Krueger
A Nightmare on Elm Street star Robert Englund has revealed the one and only condition for unretiring Freddy Krueger is the franchise were to continue. England has portrayed Freddy in all the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies, except for the 2010 reboot where Jackie Earle Haley took on the role. While there hasnt been a movie in the franchise since the remake, its also been unclear if the original actor would return to his iconic role given the opportunity. Given the length of time since the newest installment, its unclear what plans could be in place for the franchise.
Speaking with Bloody Disgusting, Englund said he would only reprise his role as Freddy in an animated rendition of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The actor explained how, due to his age, he'd be unable to perform all the slasher villain's feats in live-action anymore, but would be willing to voice...

In 1984, Wes Craven presented to the world an iconic villain, Freddy Krueger. The guy with knives for fingernails and a dirty red and green sweater. And he almost joined the ranks of Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, and perhaps, now, may actually be the greatest slasher of all time. Since A Nightmare on Elm Street terrified audiences back then, it has spawned a legacy of sequels. Dream Warriors and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare are my favorites. Still, I have a soft spot for even the weakest entries. However, there’s nothing like the first installment, and seeing A Nightmare on Elm Street recently, with its new transfer, was incredible. It brought my love of the original film back in the most maniacally mesmerizing ways!

It's now been four decades since Freddy Krueger invaded the dreams of his first group of unsuspecting teenagers in writer/director Wes Craven's 1984 horror smash A Nightmare on Elm Street. Led by Robert Englund's sinister Krueger, the film launched a franchise that would eventually include eight films (seven starring Englund), a TV series, and an uncountable number of books, comics, toys, and god only knows what other spin-off material. Actress Heather Langenkamp serves as Krueger's primary nemesis in three of those films. In the original, she's Nancy, a clever teenager who turns the tables on Krueger (and dates a young Johnny Depp). She reprised that role in A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors and then returned again for Wes Craven's New Nightmare, the series' risk-taking seventh installment, a meta twist on the franchise that finds her playing a fictionalized version of herself.

From the creators of found footage movie The Houses October Built comes Will Helm, an upcoming proof-of-concept horror short starring Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills.
Directed by Bobby Roe and written by Zack Andrews & Bobby Roe, Will Helm is hitting the festival circuit this Halloween season, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive preview.
The plot of Will Helm is under wraps, but it will be premiering at Sitges and Screamfest next month. It will also show at the Knoxville Horror Film Fest before an anniversary screening of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare at the drive-in part of the festival.
From what we gather, there is an unofficial A Nightmare on Elm Street component in Will Helm and it acts as something of a meta combo piece for the Wes Craven classic.
Bobby Roe tells Bloody Disgusting, “We are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Smile, Night Swim and Lights Out.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of writer/director Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – and, as we’ve previously reported, Warner Bros. is celebrating the film’s anniversary by giving it a 4K Blu-ray release on October 1st! A trailer for the 4K release has dropped online, and you can check it out in the embed above. While it’s great that the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is coming to 4K, one thing we’ve heard zero news about is the possibility of a new Elm Street movie going into production any time soon. Speaking to our friends at Bloody Disgusting, Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp said it’s a shame there’s no new movie news to share… especially since she believes that Robert Englund still has it in him, despite his statements to the contrary, to play dream stalker Freddy Krueger one more time.

There’s some undeniable wisdom in that Mark Twain quote about writing what you know, and that’s likely the reason why some of the best films of all time are about filmmaking itself. This also applies to the horror genre, as we can see from beloved classics like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and even The Blair Witch Project.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of those franchises that, despite its roller-coaster of quality across the series- is just too damn iconic to fall out of the favor of us horror fans. Wes Craven’s imagination birthed one of the most recognizable villains in horror history And spawned a franchise that would include 8 movies and one crossover film pitting Freddy against Jason. From 1984 and all the way up until today- audiences remain invested in the potential for such a unique and powerful monster. And we still are holding out hope for a new silver screen outing soon. So, whether you’re re-watching the original film for the millionth time- or you’re slogging your way through the 2010 remake for… some reason- the fact remains that Freddy and his status as a slasher icon will never truly die. Unless… Chapter six in the Freddy saga- Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare...

Sequels in the 1990s created cult classics, box office hits, and fun follow-ups, adding depth to beloved franchises. Alien 3, Children of the Corn II, and Return of the Living Dead III showed that sequels can thrive with creativity and innovation. Standout sequels like The Exorcist III, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, and Scream 2 proved that good horror sequels were possible in the 90s.

New Nightmare is a bold and exciting chapter in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and despite only grossing $19.8 million at the box office (making it the lowest-grossing film in the series), it is still widely regarded as one of the best sequels by fans and critics alike. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is unlike any other movie in its franchise and is relentless in its approach to blurring the lines of fiction and reality in a clever and unique format. New Nightmare reinstates Freddy Krueger to his creator's original depiction of this depraved cult character. There's less reliance on the silly humor we've come to see in the past, as Craven instead shifts the focus...

Franchise icon Heather Langenkamp has made it no secret over the years that she’d love to play Nancy Thompson in another A Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Langenkamp of course played the fan favorite role in the original classic as well as sequel Dream Warriors, and she later returned to the franchise for the final time as herself in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Is it time for a legacy sequel, now that’s it been 40 years since the franchise debuted?
Speaking at a recent Q&a event hosted by Nightmare on Film Street, Heather Langenkamp made it clear that her interest in playing the role one more time hasn’t waned over the years.
“In my imagination, I have several legacy sequels happening at the same time,” Langenkamp told the crowd of Elm Street fans. “She’s a great character. How could you say no?”

Nancy Thompson remains one of the greatest final girls in horror movie history. She is also one of the most evolved, receiving a full character arc in part because the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise needed it and because her portrayer, Heather Langenkamp, is just that great in the role. But Langenkamp hasn’t portrayed Nancy in three decades (not that the franchise has exactly been boiling). So is it time to bring back Nancy Thomspon for a full Nightmare on Elm Street revival? Langenkamp sees no reason why not.
Appearing on the Nightmare on Film Street podcast, Heather Langenkamp said that if she had the opportunity to reprise Nancy Thompson, she absolutely would. “God, yes. I mean, of course. She’s a great character. How could you say no?. I just need somebody to get that off the ground. Especially considering Nightmare on Elm Street Part 7, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.

It may just be a matter of time before Freddy Krueger is back from hell to haunt movie screens once again. For when the inevitable next film gets made, director Jon Watts is hoping to be at the helm.
Of course, Watts may be best known for his work on the McU's Spider-Man movies. After working with Tom Holland on Homecoming and Far From Home, Watts would helm the hit crossover film Spider-Man: No Way Home. He's since gotten involved with Star Wars as creator of the upcoming Disney+ series Skeleton Crew. Per Collider, Watts was present for a Directors on Directing panel at Ccxp Mexico City when he was asked by David Leitch (The Fall Guy) about which IP he'd want to take on next. While Watts suggested he most enjoys creating original stories, he admitted that he'd be interested in taking on A Nightmare on Elm Street.
